If you are in ibadan, their office at ikolaba-bodija area offers such services. I have done that severally and they charge only 3k for it. Once verified, a verified copy is issued to you, and you can kiss custom wahala goodbye afterwards. Once they see the new verified papers, they wont even bother asking you any further questions because they know you've japaa.

I said good, i will rather go with the expensive Adexfem option and have peace of mind than being penny wise pound foolish. So i was billed N2.750M (Two Million, Seven Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira) to clear the vehicle with full duty paid and i transferred the full sum same day. Only to have my vehicle impounded today and taken to the customs office because Adexfem decided to shortchange the Government; after collecting full payment from me.

Continued: Those who have done business with me on Nairaland like Gazzuzz and others know that i don't pinch pennies, and i hate cutting corners. Out of the N2.750M handed over to him for clearance, Adexfem paid a duty of N1.5M plus other minor charges bringing the total receipted sum he paid to N1.9M.

The most annoying part of this whole incident was that while the driver was on the road today, i kept asking repeatedly if the full duty was paid so that the driver will know his stand when dealing with the custom officers on the road. Adexfem kept reassuring me that the full duty was paid. My driver and escort had a rough day along the road with the customs until we got to custom checkpoint 4 and we were asked to go pay full duty or settle them with N200k.

N200k settlement at checkpoint 4, after paying N2.750M with about 7 or more checkpoints to go through. The custom officers requested to know how much exactly was given to our clearing agent (Adexfem) for the car. My driver called Adexfem to speak with the officers but he only made matters worst by name dropping and telling them that this is Nigeria.

The custom officers got annoyed with his statement and impounded the car. I got across to Adexfem and he said it would have been better we spent N200k settling them than allowing them take the car to their office. That was when he opened up that he paid N1.9M total and used the N850k or there about to grease palms at the port.

Please for the record, KakakiAutos is not to blame in anyway for this. He delivered on his promise despite all the hurdles we experienced during the buying process. There's no harm in recommending your client to another business that offers complimentary service.

you can go to customs office in Ikeja. Just take those ubwr bike because the hold up along that side is second to none.

you can verify any model of cars. Am not conversant with their lagos office though, i only verify mine in ibadan. But if you inquire from any of their office in lagos, if they dont offer such services atleast they will direct you to the office that does that.

Most Nigerians would never agree to pay full duty when quoted the actual clearing cost of a car. They would prefer to find another agent who can do it cheaper. However, this does not in any way absorb the clearing agent of all faults. It is always easier to tell client what actual clearing would cost and what partial clearing would cost.

The choice then becomes the responsibility of client.

Wont it be better if there is more transparency in the valuation of cars custom duties by the Nigerian Customs. This will enable anyone to raise remita invoice, pay the required duties and drive his or her car freely without hassles.

Ask for the valuation and duty payable on your vehicle and request for them to raise the D/N, generate assessment for you to go pay. Don't settle them. You can pay the Assesed Duty yourself . They can't impound your car as long as it was genuinely cleared and you paid the exact amount the valuation at the port gave you to pay. Of the whole sum you gave your clearing agent, he will pay Shipping charges, Terminal charges and other running expenses out of it.

You need an agent for data capture into the customs database but after collecting the assessment, you can take it to the selected bank (as captured in the SGD form) to pay the duty yourself.

The truth of the matter is that hardly will you see anyone in Nigeria that pays full duty rather customs assesses the vehicle and gives you what is appropriate to pay. Even the officers that impounded your vehicle know that hardly does anyone pay full duty. There are things I can't post online but my advice to you is to liase with the officers that impounded your vehicle to work out things. If you intend travelling interstate where you will be entering customs check points then ask them to raise additional duty for you to pay but still they can never ask you to pay full duty.

I thank my friends driver (former car salesman at berger) we were able to find a clean Tacoma TRD Sport, paid remaining customes duties (thanks for information on this thread).

It is in very good working condition, reasonable mileage (68+ thousand km), Good suspension and shocks, TRAC feature is sweet if you have ever tried it on very bad roads.

The thread was an eye-opener and has helped me make better decisions. Thanks guys

I am a clearing agent. This is the Harmonised System Tarriff that contains hs codes of all articles and their duty rates. You can download it on trade.gov.ng For used cars and LCL consignments with CIF value of less than 5,000 USD you can apply for valuation from the customs command the consignment is stowed. These goods mostly don't come with PAAR. The tariff you posted doesn't reflect 0.5% ETLS, 7% SURCHARGE on duty, and 1% CISS which are included in the calculation of duty payable.
