Lagos Doctors May Call Off Strikes by MShittu: 5:23pm On Nov 20, 2010

Lagos State doctors, under the aegis of Medical Guild, may, today, call off their three-month strike.
It was gathered that the congress of the doctors would deliberate on the concessions given by the state government regarding their Federal Government-approved consolidated salaries, otherwise known as CONMESS.
This is coming after the expanded executive of the guild, on Thursday agreed to suspend the strike, pending when the state government cleared some grey areas in their negotiation.

Mr. Richard Akinnola, an activist in the last two weeks, facilitated the negotiation.
While the doctors, as part of their demands, are still insisting on the recall of their former chairman, Dr Olaifa, who was sacked many months ago by the state government, sources close to the government said that would be a tall order, as the doctor has joined partisan politics on the platform of Peoples Democratic party(PDP).

The government source alleged political manipulation of the leadership of the doctors, adding: “No state government has invested heavily in the health sector like Lagos State in the past three years. Last year, the governor increased their salaries without promptings from the doctors, ordered 200 cars for them because of the uniqueness of their calling, yet he is being blackmailed over salary structure that was packaged by the Federal Government.”
