A capitalist country will encourage competition by selling the four-state own refineries to Dangote competitors and encourage competition, instead of monopoly.

How can the sell them when they are nowhere near optimal performance? Why sell at a massive loss? They are currently renovating all four refineries. The first step is to have them working. It's not Buhari's fault Jonathan and co neglected them.

So Nigeria is going to depend on a private refinery to stop importation of fuel.....Na wah for my country.....FTC

Why not? The countries Nigerians are rushing off to are they not dependent on private refineries and businesses?! shocked
Meanwhile, the 4 government refineries in Nigeria are near-comatose but spend hundreds of millions of US dollars periodically on TAM.

The question remain why Dangote? Why can't the federal government make our refineries work? Or is Dangote now bigger than the federal government?

He may not be bigger but he's obviously BETTER...
Nigeria is prime example of the "big for nothing" syndrome!

The sad thing was that many of the chattering class were actually praising Yar'Adua...
Because seemingly Nigerians would rather "own" 100% of NOTHING than a small percentage of something!

Meanwhile in the 12 years since Yar'Adua's blunder...
Nigeria has probably spent about US$50-60 billion importing products (enough for about 15 new refineries).

when Atiku said the only way for our refineries to function optimally is to privatise NNPC...Idiots keep saying Atiku has come to sell NNPC...And now the whole country has to depend on one man to get his refinery working before they could make progress...Mind you go check Nigeria's budget and check how much is allocated to NNPC with increased fuel subsidy

Buhari is Fraud!

Kudos to Dangote shame on my country by this the entire federation is giving one man I mean one single soul the sole power to create artificial scarcity , determine price , production among many others.
Should he choose to frustrate., the govt will be helpless in countering the plight of Nigerians .
What a shame.

Unlike now that there are never any scarcities and we are living La Vida Loca?! grin

Shame on Nigerian government for giving this dangote control over the economy.mind you the source of your raw material emanates from Niger delta, therefore one day we will wake up and regulate the influx of raw material to your refinery or better still you can import crude from another country. Shitehole

They didn't "give" Dangote anything....
Nigerians have such a rent-seeking mindset that they are always thinking 'allocation'!

This is an INVESTMENT financed entirely by Dangote (through equity and debt)...
And it's a RISKY one, which is why the 28 other private refineries licensees BEFORE Dangote did jack!

Isn’t it funny/ridiculous how our clueless leaders is trying to make us believe one person is richer than Nigeria?? How federal government is boasting how that one man is able to set up from scratch what the federal government couldn’t set up even when they have the ones they can just repair How the federal government is now saying boastfully that they are waiting on just one man to create job opportunities which they are supposed to create?? What would be the hope of the masses even when the federal government is at the mercy of just one man?? Atleast, we’ve always had clueless people at the helms of affairs but they were sensible and cautious enough to cover some shames, but being reckless with their words and cautions is the most ridiculous thing about this dispensation May God help our situation.

That's exactly how it should be. In fact, we should be depending on many private refineries to stop the importation of fuel. It certainly shouldn't be government refineries.

Complete madness, why ain't the four refineries working, it has been 5 years and Buhari the Minister of Petroleum has failed to do his job.

It's neither state capture nor a monopoly....
There were at least TWENTY-EIGHT (28) private refinery licenses BEFORE Dangote got a license.

In fact, if either of you want to build a refinery...
You are free to approach the DPR and apply for a license (with supporting evidence of course)!

Dangote's first priority will be how to pay back the loans used to set up the refinery and not how Nigeria will save x amount of billions.
If FG had set up a refinery same time as Dangote started, the refinery would have been operational by now but they would rather place the future of an entire nation to a man that dreams of being the richest man on earth by merely producing sugar, cement etc.

Are both mutually-exclusive? shocked

And why shouldn't he become the richest man by producing things that PEOPLE need, rather than just manipulating numbers on Wall Street?!

Like the billions he's currently saving in cement

YES! Before the likes of Dangote (and BUA) started producing cement locally....
Nigeria was the WORLD'S SECOND-LARGEST IMPORTER OF CEMENT (after the US).

Local production of cement by indigenous producers like Dangote (and BUA)...
Forced foreign companies like LaFarge to upgrade their old plants and invest in new ones.

Local production and competition also raised the quality of cement...
From the old 32.5R grade to Dangote's 52.5R (matching the top grade globally).

It also has created THOUSANDS OF JOBS IN NIGERIA (across the entire value chain)...
And not only saved billions of forex in imports, but also earns Nigeria forex in EXPORTS!

Exactly, and it's really a very stupid thing to do, forgetting the fact that the other part of the world is moving towards everything electric, sad.

Hydrocarbons will still play a large role in our lives and economies for most (if not all) our lives...
Norway and Canada (both leading environmental nations) gave out the HIGHEST number of oil prospecting licenses this year!

The US is exploring previously excluded prospecting areas and investing in shale...
While several advanced nations are currently locked in a struggle over the Artic's oil resources!

Her position and statement is pro-privatisation. What happens after the successful operation of Dangote Refinery, would it be asked to help save NNPC? Her statement has the hints.

They should have depended on your own? You people that get irritated whenever you hear any good news about this country, it's time the government Conduct's paternity and DNA test, to know which country you people actually came from. Because it's only an enemy or a spy that behaves the way you people do.

The money we save will help to strengthen our macroeconomy and this will, in turn, encourage investors to come in.

$10 billion each year or for how many years?
Why did she leave out that vital information?
She no want make we fact check wetin she yarn later or what is this?

STOP TALKING LIKE A DUNCE. You people need to get it out of your THICK SKULLS that the 'GOVERNMENT' is father christmas that is meant to provide everything for you.

A properly functioning economy relies heavily on the private sector and private investors to provide services, while the government's role is to provide regulatory oversight, basic infrastructure etc. This whole idea that everything is down to ''GOVERNMENT'' is what is killing you people. That is why nobody wants to come up with any ideas to do anything. You are all waiting for ''Government''. RIDICULOUS PEOPLE.

The other day someone was blaming the GOVERNMENT for not building factories to manufacture ''toothpick'', instead of us importing same.

HOW THE FCK IS THE GOVT'S JOB TO BUILD FACTORIES? IT IS YOUR JOB.

The USA govt does not build factories or refineries. These are all private sector activities. But in Nigeria, everybody sits on their fat ass waiting for GOVERNMENT to do everything.

Helpless, hopeless entities.

This your vex make brain is so on point. We as a people can be delusional sometimes, FG has 4 refineries which have never exceeded 50% production capacity in almost 30 years. Someone as come in to do his own and we are complaining. I expect that as soon as Dangote completes this refinery, we may have more private investment in this sector, especially with modular refineries which are cheaper to build.

Emefiele said the same thing late 2015 and repeated it early 2016 . He said the refinery would be operational by 2018. Later, it was postponed to 2019 and now to anytime it is completed. No more authentic delivery date.

I believed Dangote has received so much assistance from Federal Government on this refinery which he is using to simultaneously develop other projects in other African countries and Nigeria. He has expanded his businesses using the Commonwealth of Nigeria.

God help me too. Dangote is enjoying enabling environment from one government to another. They will rather kill small businesses than to allow Dangote to complain.

Sit down there and be complaining hoping, waiting and praying that things will change for the better.
