Sarah Alade Sues Alfred Olufemi And Gidado Yushau, Demands N500 Million by Islie: 6:39pm On Jan 13
The Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Finance and Economy, Sarah Alade, has demanded N500 million from two journalists, Alfred Olufemi and Gidado Yushau, over a report on hemp smoking published on May 19, 2018.

The investigative report titled: “Inside Kwara factory where Indian hemp smoking is ‘legalized,” was authored by Mr Olufemi, a student journalist at Obafemi Awolowo University.

Mr Yushau is the Editor-In-Chief of NewsDigest, an Abuja-based online newspaper that commissioned and published the story.

According to the report, Hillcrest Agro-Allied Industry, a company owned by Mrs Alade, a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), allowed the smoking of cigarettes, as well as Indian hemp by workers within its vicinity.

The report also stated that the firm refused to respond to Mr Olufemi’s inquiry on the situation after he had put several calls and text messages to the industry’s hotlines.

Last year, the two defendants were arraigned by the police before a Magistrate Court in Ilorin for criminal conspiracy and defamation based on Sections 97 and 192 of the penal code. The duo pleaded not guilty.

Following the bail application made by the defence counsel, Usman Belgore, the Chief Magistrate of the Court, A.O Muhammed, released the defendants on self-recognizance and on the basis that they are innocent until proven otherwise.

The conditions of bail include two sureties each who are relatives of the defendants with a bail bond of N200,000.

The case was then adjourned to January 13, 2020. However, when the matter was called on Monday, the prosecutor could not provide his witness and as such, the magistrate further adjourned to January 28.

Fresh Case:

After the adjournment on Monday, the two journalists were served with a writ of summons by the legal practitioner of Hillcrest Agro-Allied Industries Limited.

In the document obtained by PREMIUM TIMES, the company demanded N500 million from the duo.

The company also seeks an order compelling the defendants to retract and delete the links of the report from their platform and ensure the deletion of same from all platforms on the internet that have copied it.

Hillcrest is also asking for an apology from the online news platform and two national dailies.

The journalists have insisted that the story was accurate and they stand by its content.

The journalists hurriedly published the story(if it was actually true)

They should have gathered more pictorial evidences, interviews and the rest.

I won't forget BBC's documentary on Codeine and Premium times story on forged NYSC certificate by the Minister of Finance

Those stories reminded me of the beauty of journalism

our politicians are carrying defamation suit upandan as if the ever had a character.

In fact, I weep for the youths that offer themselves a "living Sacrifice".

Till today, the Vice President of this Republic has not arrived a Court to sue Timi Frank.

Even FIRS had disappeared from the radar while going to court.

The guy don hold them for balls and they merely saving face

There is a threat to journalism...if the story is true then journalism in this country is under threat and if it's not true then why will someone think tarnishing someone's image will bring food to his/her table through journalism.

Intolerance and high-handedness has become the norm in today's polity. Journalists are becoming endangered, at the receiving end of political intimidation. The journalists should go ahead and produce evidence to buttress their story, that is, if the judiciary will give them level playing ground. Sometimes, a press conference to address allegations of this kind openly is better than judicial intimidation. The employers may not be aware of what happens in their premises and grow defensive when matters get out.

But if they had evidence they won't be arrested. And if they were arrested, this is 2020, they can publish their evidence online with the click of a button.

The same way that you hurriedly omitted the text below

Are you another Pointus Pilate only pointing out the perceived errors of others while yours is bigger and biggest than anyone else's?

Their own case better than those locked up by governors in jail and the keys thrown away.
Since the majority of the people are not vocal enough against these atrocities, they will continue.
