Hope we are all having a swell weekend.

Our desire in the long run here is for this forum to be a haven of quality money-making information from the US stock market for all to benefit from in making their respective investment decisions.

As much as we are making short term gains here and there from updates shared, it's important to also supply information in support of long term and dividend trades/stocks to balance the equation.

We are convinced there are now forum members who are more tilted to hunting for the best dividend stocks, growth stocks and value stocks.

Some of us are still traditional long term investors while also sipping from the gains of short term trades.

On this note, more detailed updates on these fundamentals shall be shared.
And most pivotal will be the regular earnings updates as promised some time ago when the nairaland system kept triggering a ban when I first attempted it.
This means every new week, we shall supply information on companies due to release their quarterly, and annual reports to the floor of the exchange. As you well know, having this information ahead narrows one's focus on what to look out for every week and possibly get prepared to buy the best stocks of the moment for meaningful gains. It ends up becoming a win-win situation for both short and long term investors.

So I tried to experiment with a good stock that costs over $100 per share.

Here is the result of that experiment:
Bought just 1 share of BEYOND MEAT (BYND) at $119.08 on 20th February 2020.
Today 11th May 2020, I kissed the stock goodbye at $136.1 with a gross profit per share of $17.02!

Now it feels like I should have invested more because this $17.02 gain would have easily been $1,702 gross profit on 100 shares; equivalent of almost N700,000!

Now take that $119 and invest in a $10 stock. Let’s say it increased in equivalent with your previous calculation. Let’s say $13.6. That is $3.6 on each shares . Now multiply by 12. So I decided to demo trade while still setting up my live account because I'm new to stocks. But I noticed that the value of my protfolio does not reflect the market value of stock. It is static. For example if a buy a share for $10, and the value of my portfolio is say $100, if the share price if the stick drops to $7 it does not reflect in the value of my portfolio. Is there something wrong I'm doing? Plz help a newbie

True, I started trading two weeks ago. I just decided not to follow the crowd but wanted to learn the hard way maybe. I bought wayfair two weeks ago and sold today with a gain of 45%.

It all depends on your risk appetite and the volume of cash at your disposal.

If you have $1m to trade with, you will be more careful with penny stocks as safety will become your priority.

I am actually not a fan of trading with large cap stocks of course. Like I stated, it was just an experiment.
In the end, no strategy is wrong as long as you are happy with your gains.

How is it different from the "pre-market" period?

NOVAVAX has been surging after their earning conference this evening in the "after-hours" period, and I don't know if that will reflect on the stock when the market opens again tomorrow.

Now that's what completes the possible scenarios as losses are also part of the business.

But then it depends on when you sell, as every loss is a paper loss until you sell.
It will interest you to note that a few weeks after I bought at $119 it dropped below $100. Selling then would have made it a loss as you have opined, but I held on, as I was sure of what I bought.

Example for your novavax, it ended at 25 dollars, the after market will start from 25 dollars, I see it's currently at 35 dollars, if it ends at the that, the pre market will start at 35 dollars. Let's assume it goes up to 40 dollars, the main stock market will start at 40 dollars

For you, as the Market open at 40 dollars, your gain will jump by 60%. Can go up or come down

Transactions go on during those period but have limited liquidity. The main market is where bulk of money is.

Just note that because a surge in the after market and pre market is no guarantee there will be a surge when the market opens..
