Personnel of the Nigerian Army Department of Military Intelligence at the local wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, have arrested a man for being in possession of two highly weaponised drones.

The incident happened on January 28, 2020 at about 5:00pm while DMI officers at the cargo section discovered a suspicious package concealed in cartons.

Upon opening the cartons, the officers discovered parts of two highly weaponised drones and the supervisor told the man that brought it into the country to go and report the following day.

Investigation revealed that the following day the man was asked to write a statement after which he was detained.

Upon interrogation at the National Air Defense Corps, Ikeja, the suspect claimed to be working for the Kaduna State Government.

Further investigation revealed that, Commander of NADC, Air commodore U.K Abdullah, later received a call from some unknown persons, who ordered him to release the man and drones.

Abdullah, it was gathered, later released the suspect and drones on January 30, 2020.

The commander, who only assumed duties in December 2019 at the NADC, was said to have instructed his officers to drop further investigation on the matter.

When contacted by SaharaReporters, Kelechi, who did not deny his involvement in the incident, refused to comment on the issue, only saying that at the appropriate time the relevant body was going to shed more light into the matter.

When asked to mention, who this relevant body was, Kelechi said, “It is confidential. At the appropriate time the appropriate body will speak on this. That is all I have to say.”

Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs in Kaduna State, Samuel Aruwan, when contacted by SaharaReporters, denied the involvement of the state government in the seized items.

Recall that in May 2016, the Nigerian Government placed a ban on launching Remotely Piloted Aircraft or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (drones) in its airspace without a permit from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority as well as the Office of the National Security Adviser.

According to the rule, drones weighing more than 250 grams (.55 pounds) must be registered with the NCAA.

Defending its decision, government stated that the deployment of drones “without adequate security clearance” had led to “predictable safety concerns and security threats.”

The NCAA in a statement at the time, said, “Therefore, no government agency, organisation or an individual will launch an RPA/UAV in the Nigerian airspace for any purpose whatsoever without obtaining requisite permit from the NCAA and ONSA.

“The NCAA wishes to reiterate that all applicants and holders of permits to operate RPA/Drones must strictly be guided by safety guidelines.

“In addition, operators must ensure strict compliance with the conditions stipulated in their permits and the requirements of the Nig. CARs.”

Findings by SaharaReporters revealed that Kaduna is among states that have made moves to deploy drones to tackle bandits, kidnappers, and killer herdsmen within its territory in recent times.

Recently, it was a failed attempt by one useless Sanni to bomb the Living Faith Church at Kaduna, now, we've another failed attempt of two weaponised drones concealed in cartons to cause mass destruction....

It seems the Kaduna State Government have alot of explanation to do.

We demand a United Nations supervised mop-
up of Nigeria for weapons of mass destruction
and other illegal arms that some people may
be stockpiling for possible genocide.

How do you even define weaponized?

Why are people really so stupid? That drone may be expensive, but it's not weaponized all those idiots beating the drum of war and assuming everything, it just shows how uneducated you all are

A cheap aerial mission drone capable of taking pictures of tiniest places in the world retails for around 17k usd and it requires a base station

And coming from Sahara reporters, sensible people should suspect Sowore is up to something

If weaponized drones of this size are available, I bet whole of USA and Iran terrorists would have gotten their hands on them

Kelechi is lying, Sowore and his news paper are lying

Yse your heads for once

Are you aware that weaponized UAV drones require a special kind of training and a substation for it to function and the "weapons" have to be purchased internationally?

Anything you see you just run to and spew trash, there's no weaponized drone of that size, unless the drone is going to carry dust or pistol

you must really be slow if you have never heard of weapons black market... do you think people at Military inteligence are dunce? you think the money spent on them training at Sandhust and US war college is for waste... nobody would call a drone an attack drone without seeing a barrel, trigger or anything to support it as being ballistic

PS: incase you are ignorant of armed drone technogy, its being around since 70s, taiwan makes it, same as china and iran (SHAHED) so any one of this could have sold it on blackmarket especially china and Iran

I'm just tired of idiots everywhere on nairaland, that's not a weaponized drone, apart from the fact that strike drones cost millions of dollars, it can't be of that size, an ordinary missile (if that's what their imagination is saying) is a lot larger than that, I don't see how that drone can be weaponized

Also a strike drone needs satellite, base station and a specially trained pilot to make it work, this is probably a drone for aerial mapping or something

Our people are stupid, too stupid

i think you need to read more on drones before spewing this trash, who told you drones are only weaponized with guided missiles and anti tank.. even british BAE makes fully autonomous drones you are here talking about trained piliot, more drones dont even use satelite commuinications anymore because of Jammers on most russian tanks, they are preloaded with needed data and camera tracking or laser tracking

I remembered during President Buhari first tenure that was how one of those drones came out of no where facing me directly. My hear did skip a little, I couldn't get over the fact that it could be weaponize as it was completely different from the one used to shoot movies. I can't imagine dying and not knowing who order the hit.

It is this same type of phonecalls
that police formations get when Fulani
kidnappers or murderers are apprehended.

A call from 'above' will just order them
to be released. You argue at the risk of
losing your job.

Buhari & his cabal are slowly destroying
the fabric of this nation, through
pathological nepotism & religious bigotry.

Their actions are dictated by religion, not the
constitution. Yet, they will not apply the
criminal aspects of Shari'a law against
Fulani criminals.

Boko haram keep beheading our
soldiers & Innocent Nigerians on video,
yet our govt releases their members
without trial & gives them money.

We are beginning to understand why
BH nominated Buhari as their spokesperson
during the discredited GEJ era .
