Am finding it difficult to get the recommended 5w20 for my 2003 Honda accord. It has a mileage of almost 159k. Will it be a good idea to switch to mobil 5w30 that is always readily available? Thank you in anticipation

2003 Honda Accord of 159k mileage? You can use normal 20W50 for it but drain between 3000 and 4000kms

This is wrong!

Regardless of the mileage put on op's engine, it is still good to go using synthetic (provided the engine hasn't been previously abused with 20W50 oil weight) The 5w(20)(30) flows better as well as getting good gas mileage. In the long run protecting your engine. You would only need to worry about only changing valve cover gasket maybe once every year.

Op, please disregard the opinion of this guy and yes! -- 5W30 can still serve the same purpose as 5w20. Ensure you get good full synthetic oil even if you can't afford mobile 1.

This is my engine after 190k Miles on the Odometer.

Thanks to everyone here. I remain grateful to everyone who advised. Before I even posted this topic, I knew 20w50 cannot go well with engine meant to use 5w20. I wanted to know if only due to the nearness of the two oils (5w20 and 5w30), one can serve the purpose of the other. Thank you all. You all educated me.

You might say what you feel like but my engine Mileage is above 317k miles. Do you know how long i have used it in Nigeria to get to that mileage? to cut the long story short, the engine has never been worked on. I carry out the oil replacement by myself. Like i have always insisted... check the manual's oil selection charts and choose the recommended lubes according to region.

Check Hyundai Workshop platform: can you see the role played by the temperature of the region you intend to use the car in? Nigeria's temperature at worst is 7 degrees clesuis.

It seems like the manual you posted is for European spec car.. The bottom line is car owners must follow owners manual at all times.. Some European cars are built different than the USA counter part.. Just because you can use 20w50 in Car A , does not mean it automatically applies to Car B..... ...

Keep in mind car technology is always changing and improving.. You can't compare a car's engine of 1999 to the same car of 2008 or lower.. Manufacturers are always looking for ways to improve engine performance and also emission laws are built in place .....A Toyota engine of 20 years will likely take some abuse and neglect ,but it does mean that the same currant Toyota engine of today will take the same abuse..

Let us be objective in what we spew out to the readers, reading is fundamental and encourage people to read owners manual at all times..

FUN FACTS: Do you believe Toyota 4runner that was built in early 90's so much stronger than their current ones? The old 4runner had a Stronger body built with metal not plastic like the currant ones. The old ones could with stand more impacts from accident... but the old ones were a lot heavier than the new ones..

Again.. Car owners need to read the owners manual of their car.. What applies to your car manual might not apply to others .. Your car engine might be 15 years old or more .. Technology is always changing and improving.. My 07 Hyundai elantra recommends 5w30 or 5w20.. But tells you for better fuel mileage 5w30 is the best...

And 5w30 will work under extreme weather cold or hot...

The first picture must be outdated based on the API specs. The second picture is more recent and does not recommend the use of 20W-50 oil. Bottom line: manage your engine with what you believe in.

My brother, you are not in USA; you are in Nigeria... Google the Manual of Toyota Manufactured in South Africa lets see what it says. Since you know more than Elizade of Toyota Nigeria Limited; stroll to their workshop and tell me the lube they use. Take pictures please

SMH! We now know more than the vehicle manufacturer by saying that the Manual in the vehicle is wrong. My brother there is no need for these argument. I took delivery of this vehicle, I have been using GTX Essential (20W50; API-SN) on it and till this moment, no issues, no smoky exhaust, acceleration is great.

What Tribology certification do you have if I may ask?

You are not in USA and don't enjoy same climatic and usage condition with them; lest i forgot, 3rd Mainland Traffic build-up is almost the worst in the whole world-that's some of the conditions you consider. Remember, (go and remove the thermostat unless you want it to overheat and burn your gasket); only in this part of the world.

Do you really think Elizade is using the right fluids. I've written it here severally that some of these dealerships in Nigeria are killing off cars gradually. As soon as the 5 years or 100000km guarantee is up, those engines and transmissions start packing up. Of course the owners replace them. Yet cars are being imported into this country with over 300,000 miles on their first engines and transmissions.

Please don't play that USA and Nigeria card. It's rubbish. Care to know how big that country is and the various weathers they have there? From the simmering heat of California, Texas and Co to the freezing regions?

They got it all and the 0w-20 works in all those weather extremes.

Stick to what the manufacturer recommends. It's that simple.

Dru23 is actually in USA. Guess you are new to this section.

Dont mind the young man .. I will never buy cars from them .. I was told that their Elantra they bring in has a very low quality engine made from poor materials or something to that nature.. And USA spec elantra engine spec are much better and less expensive.... But bottom line is I won't even go near Elizade Motors at all .......
