FYI, Nigeria's economic growth is accounted for by the oil and non-oil sectors.
If oil price and production increases the economic growth rate increases and if it goes down, growth rate reduces.

Tell us the price of a barrel of oil in January 2014 and January this year

Oil and gas is just about 7-8% of Nigeria's GDP...
Accordingly, Nigeria's GDP growth is NOT driven by oil.

However, Nigeria's economy is unduly affected by oil prices...
Because over 90% of forex and about 70% of FG revenue comes from oil.

Reality is that even diaspora remittances are more than oil earnings...
If Nigeria invests in its huge domestic market (infrastructure, etc.), it can build a great economy without oil.

I'm sure if it was Nigeria that was said to have gone into recession again you'd have been happy and cursing Buhari, Tinubu and APC.
Abeg go siddon abeg, Nigeria's economy is the largest on the continent and economic growth is getting faster, deal with that for now.
what have you gained from that? You claim that you have the best economy and yet people are suffering, every year thousands of Nigerians embark on a dreadful journey to Italy through the desert. Abeg free all those audio news jare. Best economy my foot.....

know if u read carefully the Op never said Nigeria grew economically but rather Nigeria overtook SA because of her second successive recession...
this would have been a good news if Nigeria overtook SA while SA is doing good economically...
and if u check the stat only Lagos account for more than 70 percent of those GDP...

we practically have nothing to celebrate..

How is this good news? Did you read the post at all? Nigeria's economy overtook SA's not because it grew but because SA's economy shrunk. Nigeria's economy was worth over $500bn dollars pre 2015. A little google search would help with that. Thank me later

Nigeria emerges Africa’s largest economy

March 4, 2020 in Business, News Update

https://thenationonlineng.net/nigeria-emerges-africas-largest-economy/

Our Reporter
As if a recession wasn’t enough bad news for South Africa, it’s now confirmed as the continent’s second-largest economy.

The answer to the question of whether South Africa or Nigeria, the two countries that account for almost half of sub-Saharan Africa’s gross domestic product, is the biggest economy on the continent has long depended on which exchange rate you use for the West African nation. But now both the official naira rate of 306 per dollar and the weaker market exchange rate of around 360 that almost all investors use put Nigeria tops.

Nigeria’s growth beat forecasts in the fourth quarter, helping its economy to expand the most in four years last year as oil output increased and the central bank took steps to boost credit growth.

Read Also: Finance Act will stimulate Nigerian economy — Osinbajo
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the West African country stood at $476 billion or $402 billion, depending on the rate used.

South Africa’s economy went the opposite direction.

It slumped into a second recession in consecutive years, contracting more than projected in the fourth quarter as power cuts weighed on output and business confidence. For the full year, expansion was 0.2 per cent, the least since the global financial crisis, and even less than the central bank and government estimated. Based on an average rand-dollar exchange rate of 14.43 for the year, GDP was $352 billion.

Projections show the economy will continue to grow faster. While the International Monetary Fund (IMF) cut its forecast for Nigeria’s 2020 growth to two per cent from 2.5per cent last month due to lower oil prices, South Africa’s GDP is forecast to expand only 0.8per cent.

Nigeria Finally Unseats South Africa As The Most Valuable Brand In Africa
By Andrew Christian December 10, 2019

For 9 years, South Africa has been blowing Nigeria – Africa’s largest economy – out of the water as the country with the most valuable brand in the continent. But things have changed as the West African country has taken over in 2019, per findings from the 2019 Nation Brands report by U.K-based Brand Finance.

The 2018 edition of the report valued South African brands at USD 207 Bn ahead of Nigeria’s USD 203 Bn. As S.A’s nation brand diminished by 7 percent the past year, that of Nigeria grew by 6 percent. Dwelling on the different of just a few billion dollars, the report did warn that South Africa risked being Africa’s most valued brand following years of mismanagement.

David Haigh, CEO of Brand Finance, said while South Africa remained the gateway to Africa for close to a decade, it faced an uphill battle.

“As South Africa struggles to recover from the turmoil of the Zuma years, its nation brand is also in danger of being overtaken by Nigeria, making it one to watch for years ahead,” Haigh wrote in the foreword of the 2018 report.

Last year, South Africa was the world’s 49th most valuable national brand, while Nigeria was the 50th. This year, Nigeria leaps 10 places and comes six places before South Africa, securing the 40th place on the ranking. Africa’s former most valuable national brand now occupies the 47th place on the report.

Egypt, up from the 54th position in last year, now sits in 49th position, making it the third most valuable nation brand in Africa. As fourth in line Algeria sits at 56th, thought it occupied the 58th position in the previous report. Morocco and Kenya were ranked at 64th and 66th respectively.

You won't see wailers in threads like this, people who wake up and wishing evil on their country as if if anything bad happens, they won't be affected.

Nigeria went into a recession years back,
Naira was on a free fall etc and they were all happy

Fast forward and the reverse became the case and they became angry.

South Africa entered another recession and they were wishing it was Nigeria that was mentioned.

Either you don't know shit about the economy or your being mischievous. Nigerian economy was the biggest in Africa under Jonathan and even then its not an achievement. Economy is the interpersons economic activities.... The buying and selling we do forms part of the economy. So if u are rejoicing that the trade 200million people do is more than that done by 55million people, then you are delusional. We shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence with south Africa on economic indices if the government is properly stimulating the economy

Trade is merely one component (less than one-third) of Nigeria's GDP.

If Biafra were independent nation from 1966 to date, the country will be dragging economic might with Asian tigers like China, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia etc, not South Africa. Biafra would have launch Africa positively on the world map as a black economy powerhouse. A people that could organized themselves to manufacture Amoured tanks and spectacular weapons from scratch to hold Nigeria for 3 good years to the amazement of America and Europe shows the ability and ingenuity of Biafrans. Biafra would have join the like of America and Russia as major arms suppliers in the world!
Now imagine them channeling that same energy and spirit to develop their country economically? The black race would have gain more respect today. But because of the virus of One Nigeria, that reality was dashed - (but not forever, Biafra will raise again).
Nigeria is nothing but a glorified village. A country cursed with mediocrity, terrorism, quota system, and the ''Put them down Syndrome.''
Nigeria can't even boast of a world class city. Countries like Ivory Coast have better and well developed cities than Nigeria.
The fact that the God forsaken country is even struggling economically with South Africa is a big shame because Nigeria's economy was on the same level with South Korea in 1960. Today South Korea is not only competing with China, the country has world class companies competing with the likes of Apple and General Mottors of America! And we here celebrating mediocrity. What's the benefit of being Africa's largest economy when we can't even manufacture pencils? Does Nigeria have a functional steel company? How can Nigeria become an industrial manufacturing hub when common Abeokuta steel complex is in shambles? Nigeria is nothing but a failed state!
South Africa's economy, as it is even in recession is still by far more robust and developed in manufacturing, service industry, commerce, power, infrastructure than Nigeria. Remove crude oil from the country's economy and Nigeria will disappear from the world map!
Total division of Nigeria is the only way out of this perennial economic calamity that is Nigeria.
ONE NIGERIA IS DEAD!

But the Five States combined could not match Ogun State in all parameters

1 dollar to 15.38 Rand
1 dollar to 365.50 Naira

1 Rand to 23.77 naira

Why are we being deceived, if our economy were that good, our currency won't go that way.

We don't need a soothsayer to tell us our economy is poor, infact extremely poor.

So you as a Nigerian investor, you want to buy a machine worth $1000 which would cost you 365,000 Naira compared to a South African investor who will paid15,380 Rand.

Which of the two investors would be smiling?

People rejoicing at these "audio" economy should continue...
Tell us how much a South Korean would be buying same machine in the his local currency

The question is, with South Africa sliding to second position, healthcare and education are still free. Power supply is constant which is essential for industrialization.
However, in Nigeria the sort is different, even a thing as simple as given birth in the hospital requires that the family provide blood before the child will be delivered. Where have we gone wrong.

Don't mind them. Buhari and his junta are the only beneficiaries. They are dipping into the dollar reserve. They are dollar denominated. Naira is strange to them. That's why he devalued the naira even further since he came. If all we produce is oil and we buy everything, what was the rationale behind weakening the naira

Shege poverty capital.
Do you realise that if Buhari continued to give out the dollar reserve to importers at the rate before that within months, Nigeria won't have dollars to import essential goods like medicines, our reserves would've been depleted and we'd have to go to the IMF or world bank to go beg
