For the President and Governors, it should be minimum of a University Degree.

For Senate & House of Reps and State Houses of Assembly, it should be minimum of NCE, HND or Bachelors Degree [or Any Post Secondary Degree/Diploma]

Time for illiterates leading professors has come to an end.

This is one of the major problems in this country.

The reason why the illiterates go into govt only to loot, cos they have nothing else in their brains to offer.

The fact Jonathan with a PhD in Zoology or whatever, is a clueless buffoon, does not mean every PhD holder is the same.
Having a sound education (which is different from just passing through school like Jonathan did), is a starting point in an enlightened mind.
Would you compare a Durotoye, a Moghalu or a Sowore with Jonathan or the Jibrin we have in Aso Rock today, in all spehres of human endeavor?

If not for the "force of the gun", who be Buhari?

Actually All thoise people would be failures as presidents. They might make good ministers or advisers but not good presidents. What have any of them managed in their lives? It is easy to criticise, it is easy to talk of theory. managing a country is more than going to school.

Our problem is not education or a lack of education. Our problem is a lack of sincerity and a lack of ideas. You dont need a degree to have or lack ideas and sincerity.

Diploma is not even acceptable.
For president, vice, governors, deputy and law makers should be minimum of first decree.
President and and Governors should have a minimum of MBA cos they need to know how to see opportunities and make money out of anything...

Lawmakers must have BSc.

Ministers must have PhD so we know you know what you are doing

In a country where many university graduates can barely speak good English, I personally think a university’s first degree qualification should be minimum requirement for a presidential candidate or maybe at least, an HND. wink

let us take the case of a deputy governorship aspirant with an MBA, who when submitting his INEC form decided to submit his life history plus primary school certificate that nobody asked him for. This primary school certificate is what was used to disqualify him and his governor. When a masters degree holder does not know that "minimum school leaving certificate" does not mean you have to submit all your certificates, when a masters degree holder cannot read the requirements and simply submit one certificate be it secondary, bachelors or masters that has the required names and meets the requirements of ""minimum school leaving certificate"", then you know having a degree will not save us.

Degi won election, he has amasters degree, but he is cooling off because despite his many degress he cant read and understand simple english. A masters degree holder who swears an affidavit with no officer of the court named, what kind of education is that?

Degree does not buy common sense or intelligence. A degree is simply the ability to regurgitate and not always a test of intelligence, comprehension or exposure.....you only peruse nairaland!!!

Listen to videos of late Adedibu the Ibadan political thug, the man has no degree but his intelligence and command and understanding of English is beyond many PhD holders

Totally unnecessary bill.

Neither the US nor the UK has any educational requirements for their leaders. In a proper democracy, the electorate chooses who it feels is most qualified. This is not necessarily based on education. Is Jonathan a better president than say Kagame of Rwanda despite being more educated?

The certificates of many Nigerian universities are not fit for even wiping arses so I don't understand the hullabaloo behind the clamor for qualifications. It's not as if Jonathan's PhD translated into impressive performance.

I wish they will make it the way they-politicians- run their businesses- asking for highly qualified and experienced people with job specifications attached because it seems many of those called rulers do not even know what they are going into elective offices to do

And I am sure you consider yourself educated.

So, you didn't see that the bill proposes to clarify academic qualifications, and not to raise academic qualifications.

Also, you must know that Buhari is very educated. He has more than a diploma.

There's no need for a minimum educational qualification.

So if Zuckerberg was a Nigerian, he should not be allowed to contest for election because he has no degree?

This is an unnecessary agitation. There are lots of lecturers who are dull and just a few steps above idiocy yet they have a PhD, go figure.

If you agree with minions and mischief makers that Buhari is the problem of Nigeria because he has no certificate, how about your state governor who under-developed your state even with his procured certificate? At least, the 36 state governors have your kind of acceptable certificates yet Nigerian states are in shackles and penury.

It's sad that the Nigerian youths are most naive, docile, tribal and religiously bigoted set of people in the world. They will never considered national issue objectively. They can't be taken seriously.

Certificate in Nigeria is a scam. Anyone can procure it in Nigeria.

Buhari is the problem of nigeria because he is a bad leader.
