PRESS RELEASE FROM OPERATIONS SAFE HAVEN ON THE UNFORTUNATE DEATH OF CIVILIAN ON 12 MAY 2020

Operation SAFE HAVEN regrets the unfortunate death of a civilian by name Mr Rinji Peter Bala by its personnel.

At about 10 pm on 12 May 2020, information was received on the activities of suspected armed robbers and cultists operating around No 18th Street, Jos South LGA of Plateau State. The report revealed that the criminals took advantage of the lockdown and curfew to perpetrate crimes. Consequently, Sector 1 patrol troops of OPSH swiftly responded and arrested 7 suspects, which were immediately moved to the Headquarters Sector 1 for preliminary investigation.

Thereafter, 5 out of the 7 suspects were cleared and asked to leave the premises. Unfortunately, as they were leaving the premises, one of the personnel on sentry duty mistook them for escaping suspects. Thus opened fire on them, which led to the death of Mr Rinji Bala.

However, a thorough investigation is ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident. Meanwhile, the MOPOL personnel involved in the incident has been arrested and detained accordingly.

Operation SAFE HAVEN has condemned the sad incident. A representative of OPSH has also visited the parents of the deceased to commiserate with them. OPSH also assures the general public of justice.

Ibrahim Shittu
Major
Media Officer, Operation SAFE HAVEN

Firstly, knowing that there was a lockdown why release them to go on their own, wouldn’t another set of patrol team have rounded up and returned them to the same spot

secondly, Nigeria aRmy means to tell us that there is no communication between their gate and military police about the released persons leaving their base. They just allowed them to walk off the military base without any form of communication

Then thirdly, were they running that the sentry guards should now open fire on them and at that only got one of the five ..what kind of training made it impossible for him to open fire and kill just one , poor marksmanship or what

Una just go waste somebody pikin

They said a case of robbery reported where as the location of the army sector is almost 5 kilometres that you will pass A DIVISION POLICE STATION THE BIGGEST ON THE STATE YOU WILL PASS THROUGH THE POLICE HEADQUATERS PASS POLICE STATE CID PASS SECTOR3 AT HILL STATION ROUNDABOUT PASS ANGLU POLICE STATION....
All this police formation cannot be contacted to respond but they will go that far for just a Hilux and the army went ahead to investigate and that are night give self bail to five out of seven suspect beat them up and ask them to run out of the base and sentry guard will open fire by mare thinking......

Soldiers are meant to be in the barracks. If they are to be outside, it should be when they are fighting war or insurgency like Boko Haram or involved in humanitarian duties in time of crisis caused by nature or guarding critical national assets like oil pipelines. Only in Nigeria you see soldiers mounting checkpoints in civilian areas and doing the work of police. This has to stop.

I prefer armed robbers to our security forces. At least an armed robber is after the money but security forces in Nigeria are after money and life of the victims.

So sad how they're changing the story. I live in jos and this guy leaves couple of streets from mine.every popular guy. What happened was that he was strolling with his guys during the lockdown in his area, so the army guys arrested them in the name of violating lockdown. They carried them to the station and were asking of 10k bail. The guys father is very influential, so these army guys don buy work. The boy called his dad and told him everything, his dad now called someone big there, probably their superior, who now ordered them to free the boys. Angered by this, they now released them and told them to run, that's when they started firing. This guy got hit immediately while another guy got hit in the leg... RIP young blood, your killers will never know peace

His only shortcoming was being born in Nigeria. we do not have the full details of how he was killed without just cause.
I really hope the family will sue the Nigeria Army, Chief of Defence and The FG.
get that compensation, and jet out with the rest of the Family
