There is nothing wrong in taking more loans to finance specific projects, the Presidency said on Sunday.
It urged those criticising efforts in borrowing to develop the country, to desist.

Presidential spokesman Femi Adesina said Nigeria has more capacity to accommodate loans.

He spoke while featuring on Southwest Political Circuit, a popular political interview programme on Ibadan-based radio station, Fresh F.M.

Adesina called from his Aso Rock office to take questions on aspects of COVID-19 management and economic issues.

He said that there was no need for Nigerians to raise concern about the country’s rising debt profile because the President Muhammadu Buhari administration is applying loans to the specific projects they are meant for.

Although he pointed out that the huge debt, which the country is owing, was largely borrowed by previous administrations, he stressed that current figures were within the capacity of the country’s Gross Domestic Products (GDP) to service and repay.

Adesina said: “Don’t forget that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) came out to say that Nigeria’s economy has the capacity to absorb more loans and that Nigeria is taking below what its GDP can afford. IMF said it and it is on record. Nigeria’s GDP can service more loans than it is taking. That is a vote of confidence in Nigeria’s ability to repay the loans it is taking.

“Taking loans to use for development is not a crime. But taking loans to steal and pocket as we used to have it in this count; ry is what is criminal. You will find out that even the profile of the loans, Nigerians don’t know it.
“Even former president Olusegun Obasanjo gave a lecture where he quoted a figure about what Nigeria owes. The Debt Management Office (DMO) had to come out to correct him. I think he quoted something in the region of $90b or $100b debt.

The DMO office came to say all that this administration has taken is a little over $20b. The DMO also told us what the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government left as loans and debt. So, a lot of commentators don’t know the correct profile.

“The loans will be used for development, for provision of infrastructure, open up and stimulate the economy. These loans are good because they are used for development and that is what this administration is doing. The loans are within tolerable limit.

“So, those who are making noise about loans, particularly the outgone government, are only shedding crocodile’s tears because under them, they took loans and pocketed the money and we didn’t see what they did with the loans. But Nigeria is now taking loans and Nigerians can see what the government is doing with the loans.”

He said the government could borrow more money to revive the economy from the consequences of COVID-19 if it considered it appropriate.

He assured that the Buhari administration was already considering all possibilities in its efforts to mitigate the effects of the pandemic.

With strong economies reeling from the effects of COVID-19, Buhari’s media adviser explained that the Federal Government would carefully apply strategies that would effectively restore the fortunes of the country post-COVID-19.

While responding to the allegation that the Federal Government was supporting farmers in the North to the detriment of their southern counterparts, he said such allegation was coming “from a mindset that is one of the banes of Nigeria.”

He said: “There is what is called LAKE rice, which is a collaboration between Lagos and Kebbi states. Is Lagos in the North? No. Rice is grown massively in Ogun State and is Ogun State in the North? No.

“Every state has the right to access the Anchor Borrowers programme of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). But the CBN has standards and principles and guidelines. Any state that meets the guideline can get the money.

“Maybe states that are not benefitting for now are not ready to pay their counterpart funds or are not ready to organise farmers into cooperatives. That will not be the fault of the Federal Government. The funds are available for every part of the country.

“Anybody who says the Federal Government is supporting the North against the South on this programme is operating from a mindset that is one of the banes of Nigeria.”

Yes it is true, there’s nothing wrong in taking more loans to do some projects. But this begs the question, how do you intend to service the previous loans?

I agree that there is nothing wrong in taking loans for specific projects but there is everything wrong in taking loans without using it for the specific projects. You people are just filled with greed and hate. You take loans and you embezzle the loans. And he is still talking about past administrations. These people are shameless. Project, project , project but when we look around we don't see the projects. Oh i almost forgot, the projects are too big for the eyes to see.

Something would have been wrong in taking more of these senseless loans if Buhari were to repay them with his personal money. But since he is borrowing and squandering with his gangs for the whole country to repay possibly by another administration, then he will not see anything wrong in doing so. All through his youthful and adult life, he has been depending on free money paid to him from Abuja in the name of pension and entitlement. He has been a deadly parasite to the country all along.

Even if we can accommodate more loans, that doesn't mean we should take it. The loans that have been taken before hasn't amounted to anything.
Rather than take loans, why don't we reduce the cost of governance and use that surplus to fund critical projects?
We have to learn to manage our spending instead of looking to borrow more.

By the time he is done with his loan shopping spree, the IMF ballifs will come and assess Nigeria and will start selling off everything just to get their money back.

This is what happens when you elect a man who didn't even complete this WAEC exam to the highest office in the land.

Femi Arindin Adesina can continue with the lies ...

Analysis of data obtained from the Debt Management Office shows that Nigeria has spent a total of N7.04 trillion to service both domestic and external debts under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration alone.

Note that since President Buhari assumed office in 2015, the country’s debt profile has increased by almost 107% in naira value. In the first quarter of 2015, Nigeria’s total public debt stood at N12.4 trillion or $64.2 billion, while it rose to N24.9 trillion or $81.27 billion in March 2019.

What this means is that Nigeria’s total debt has more than doubled since the President assumed office. Below are more details:

External debt service gulped a total of N931 billion or US$2.1 billion in the last 5 years
Commercial loans take the biggest share of Nigeria’s total external debt servicing amounting to US$1.58 billion
In just one year (2017-2018), total external debt service increased by over 200%.
Nigeria paid the sum of $464 million or 142 billion to service external debt in 2017, while the figure rose significantly to $1.47 billion or 451.8 billion in 2018.
Just like external debt, domestic debt servicing has also been gulping over N6.1 trillion in the last 5 years.
The total amount spent on servicing Nigeria’s domestic debt in 2015 was N1 trillion. Fast forward, the figure on an annual basis rose to 1.79 trillion in 2018 representing a 76% increase.

A nation that cannot make money is a joke.

Oil that was supposed to be a blessing became a curse.

We just keep chanting 'Diversification' as a religious mantra without a solid proof that we even know what we are talking about.

A nation that cannot implement any short, midium or long term plan.

As if the curse of leadership we suffered from 1960 to 1999 was not enough, we entered a worse curse since 1999 till date with Buhari being the worst mistake any nation can make.

The only remaining thing in Nigeria that still gives me hope that Nigeria will get it better someday is the 'human capital'.

APC alone borrowed 27trillion naira in 5 years!!!!.. upon the whole borrowing, nothing to show forth (Buhari is a disaster)... You just sit down and think, how we are going to finance these debts and you find out that nothing, not even oil that's selling below $20 can finance these huge debts the Buhari government and his Yahoo Yahoo party has put us into. Time is coming when we are unable to pay these debts and the Chinese will come for our neck.... To those idiots supporting this government Aluta Continua!!! UP National!!! Until the Chinese start putting price tag ontop your head, then you'll realize how Buhari alone borrowed away your future.
