Nigeria’s Soldiers of Fortune: The Abacha and Obasanjo Years by Max Siollun

In the cataclysmic decade that is the focus of this book, Nigeria was subject to several near-death experiences. These began when the country nearly tore itself apart after the northern-led military government annulled the results of a 1993 presidential election won by the southerner Moshood Abiola, and ended with former military ruler General Olusegun Obasanjo being the unlikely conduit of democracy.

This mini-history of a nation’s life also reflects on three mesmerizing protagonists who personified that era. First up is Abiola: the multi-billionaire businessman who had his election victory voided by the generals who made him rich, and who was later assassinated. General Sani Abacha was the mysterious, reclusive ruler under whose watch Abiola was arrested and pro-democracy activists (including Abiola’s wife) were murdered. He also oversaw a terrifying Orwellian state security operation. Although Abacha is today reviled as a tyrant, the author eschews selective amnesia, reminding Nigerians that they goaded him into seizing power. The third protagonist is Obasanjo, who emerged from prison to return to power as an elected civilian leader.

The penumbra of military rule still looms over Nigeria nearly twenty years after the soldiers departed, and key personalities featured in this book remain in government, including the current president.

A Woman in Her Prime by Asare Konadu

This is the story of a woman, Pokuwaa, in a traditional African village; a woman apparently cursed with “barrenness” unable to have a child. The novel traces her frustration and attempts to get pregnant, even after changing her male partner. Village life is shown very convincingly here, its political, social, economic spheres brought to the fore. Kwadwo, the man in Pokuwaa’s life, comes across as a fine gentleman, though he is in fact juggling two women, as it were. His commitment to Pokuwaa and her happiness is laudable. The story ends on a happy note, when despite all odds, the lady does get pregnant!

The Nigerian Revolution and The Biafran War by Alexander A. Madiebo

Before I came to Biafra, I was told that Biafrans fought like heroes. But now I know that heroes fight like Biafrans

French Deputy Ambassador Raymond Offroy

In the late 1960s, the attention of the world was drawn to the sufferings and courage of a group of people who, for thirty months, under a total blockade and with little more than their will to survive, waged a civil war against Nigeria. The Commander of the Biafran Army, Major General Alexander A. Madiebo (now retired) has drawn directly from his war diary to record in detail the prosecution of the war from the initial battles around Ogoja and Nsukka to the final drive through the “Ibo Heartland” and the collapse of the Biafran forces following the recapture of Owerri.

As Commander of the Nigeria Army Artillery Regiment prior to the outbreak of the war, the author was also an eye witness of the two coups of January and July 1966 and the uprisings in the North that preceded and then followed abruptly upon the second coup claiming so many lives. His own escape to the East is an adventure story in itself and his simple, straightforward narration of the events of those four years provides a wealth of new information and personal insight into that clouded period of Nigerian history.
