I wish you success, adding value, like another item, for the days where there is nothing to sell, you could sell tomatoes, dried fish, or something that has drawn your interest, but do not break any rules, and keep your activities secret, so others are not jealous.

I pray you find something of value, and definitely you will find.

Pack it like that, print a small paper with your company name and phone number and slip it inside where people can see the contact details, take it to the big supermarkets and let them know you can supply them weekly. If you dont get a contract quickly, pack it like that and sell in your neighbourhood, print a picture of that and your phone number, paste it on strategic places in your area, or a highbrow area close to you. Pray and leave the rest for God.

Hello,

Can you register on your own and sell on Instagram, Facebook shops and outside the market?

I live in an estate in Oniru and for a while some Hausa boys from mIle 12 have been Supplying housewives who don't want to go to the market for fear of the pandemic. They boys are making a killing...

Just find your own market- that's why you are going to school. Except they are forcing you to sit there and sell. See if you can develop direct links to churches and schools and take it as your own business. Partner with good friends or other family and use sense. But don't spoil your mothers business or name.

Good luck to you

The Ministry of Trade and Commerce are just there in all the states to spend money. This has been going on for decades.
Like the impunity in NURTW that has been creating billionaire thugs.

That’s the only major market at Ajegunle.

Boundary Market and Suru- Alaba Market
I meant that's not the only market in Lagos. You can't confine yourself to 1 area.

I wish to start same business there because I've gotten enough customers but I'll join their union where as the law the union is dishing out is not favourable to me. There's no good reasons for their law.. the law is only favourable to the leaders. If I'm to sell clothes in that same market I'll also join a union. Every business has it's union. I'm not trying to do this to hurt my mum but to break free from these bondage called law
Then i think you have ur answers already... Join the same Union so that u and your mom will start buying 6bags instead of 3bags, so u can make sells throughout the week, them purchase new stocks the following week...Because fighting the union will completely take your mom outter business entirely

My post might be lengthy but I'll try my best to be brief but please read to the end.

I'm in my early twenties (20's) and currently a student in one of the prestigious university in Nigeria.

Before I got admission, I usually help my mum to sell onions in Ajegunle market aka boundary market in Lagos State.

Ever since schools were shut down due to the pandemic I've been scared of helping my mum because of the despicable rules or laws guiding the business which i might not be able to keep to it thereby putting my mum in trouble and that's the only means of survival for me and mum for now.

My mum belongs to a group of people that sells same product and they are usually referred to as Union and the leaders are the one dishing out those annoying laws.

Examples of such laws are:

1. You don't buy more than the quantity of goods apportioned to you else you will be fined and suspended from selling but the so called leaders go contrary to these laws

2. They tell you when to buy goods i.e before buying new goods, you sell your old goods for 7days not minding if the quantity apportioned to you is enough or not. My self as a case study, we were apportioned 3 bags of onions and I sell 3 bags in 3 days so me and my mum would stay at home for 4days before going to buy new goods.

3. They tell you when to start selling which is 10:00am everyday excluding Sunday and this law was before the pandemic

4. They tell you how to sell i.e the size of onions you are to sell for a particular amount as if they borrowed you money or they are the one giving you money always to buy goods.

And many more of these unimaginable laws. Right now I confused! I don't know the best way to go about this and I really do wish to start selling because I'm broke and I've so many responsibilities to care for financially.

I need legal help, advice on how to go about this until I get something else to do or probably a work or a different business.

The reason for going into business is to make profit and save for rainy days but the reverse seems to be the case here.

Please help me move to front page to get more reviews in regard to this
A lot of times we are quick to criticize but don't think deeply on the reason some rules are laid down in business. Onions are perishable goods and the union knows that if u have surplus u will be forced to sell at lower price because u won't want them to perish hence the reason for the rationing. Your mum too is benefitting from these rules because if other sellers have surplus they will sell at lower prices that will push your mum out of business since she won't be able to compete and the cycle goes on.
My advise to you is to abide by the rules in that market then look for another market to be selling in days u don't have rations to sell at that market and to the fool that quoted if we have onion sellers here and those that liked his comment. Never you make mockery of someone else's means of livelihood else hunger will be your portion in life.

You should start getting your customers numbers and do home supply to them, you buy and supply directly to them at home, the goods don't need to get to the market.
My late mum sells fresh fish, my siblings are into the business now, they do home supply.

True but you can’t reside at Ajegunle & do petty business elsewhere.
Transportation alone will eat all your profits.

Firstly, there's no prestigious school in Nigeria. It is better to learn on YouTube than to be taught by Nigerian teachers

Secondly, where there's no law, there's no sin. Your mum went by those laws to send you to school. The market women have a system that is functional and sustainable and you want to shake up the balance of things.

You are rightly not in your domain, I won't be wrong if I say you are studying one science course in LASU, right?

Use this lockdown to help out your mum the best way you can and then commit the rest to studying beyond your curriculum (emphasis on our educational system above)

Lastly the best form of business now is to mind your business because your actions might cause your mum her space in the market. Trust me you don't want her to have issues with the Association, your mum knows better.

Hmmmm...unless you and other union members share a voice, you may not be able to do anything.

Why not register as a separate entity from your mom so you could have two slots at least? Or look into other markets.

My dear don’t try to go against union laws. You will regret your actions . The best you can do is try to recommend to them during one of their meetings.
Trust me I have been in your shoes once.
Re: Help, I'm Being Frustrated By The Rules Of My Mum's Business by Nobody: 12:51pm On May 28, 2020
I don’t know much about edibles market. But you can have the contacts of your customers... check up on them to know when they need a new supply. Visit restaurant and canteens... every food place needs onions.
Believe me if customers know that you can deliver and even run other market errands for them... they would be glad you’ve saved them the stress. Goodluck.
Make use of social media, it’s a great tool for marketing your products.

But if you’ve decided to rebel against the Union with big big grammar, my hand no dey o cheesy

Sometime I wished I inherited my parent business. They are both civil servants that managed to build a house in Allen avenue in Lagos, one in ondo and the other in jos. That one in jos is sold, taken irregular rent from the house in Lagos. The big mistake most parents made is telling their children go to school and abandon their business they used in sending you to school, because they feel their informal labour is suffering.
Op Onion business is a very lucrative business which you can use to live like Davido and other successful people. No formal or informal business is not backed by laws so there is nothing you can do about that. I will advice you think outside the box and one of the area you can come in is home delivery to restaurants and large families where you reside. You don't have to start with a website, you can start with N2000 handbill with prizes on it and beautiful image of onion then your phone number. You might be surprise your turn over might be twice your mum's sales in a week when you become popular. One thing left! Never be ashamed of your business! Say it in the church, say it anywhere... Success loading dear.

CABALS. They are everywhere. We scream for good leadership, but even as the level of masses we are not any better.

Please, just get you and your mother out of the Onion selling business, you can come back and deal with them later if you feel you want to get justice for others.

that is where government need to come in , it is the useless market union that made many things to be expensive in Lagos with their stupid laws

That is why you are educated, to take your mum’s business global with young ideas. Rather than sit there and whine over the market laws, which you can’t do much about- set up an IG page for onions supply.

I was shocked when I saw an IG page that sells OGI, I mean AKAMU, PAP...

Contact restaurants, suya sellers and households that may need these things. Get a direct plug and supply to your target customers.

Forget about joining the union. You can buy onions from somewhere else and sell somewhere else too. It must not be in the same market às your mum. Also showcase your goods online, there are markets online now.
