You probably would have heard of the customary ritual of granting a prisoner sentenced to death the privilege of requesting for a last meal. Though this is not a global practice but few countries like the United States of America, United Kingdom and a host of other nations regularly offer death row prisoners this privilege.

Though the United States grants this privilege of a last meal to death row prisoners, there is a limited budget for this meals per prisoner.For example in Florida a single prisoner’s last meal budget is $40, while in Oklahoma it’s $15 and if you get unlucky to be sentenced to death row in a state like Texas, you get no special last meals as the practice was outlawed in the state in 2011. The last meal is usually not served on the day of execution but at least two to three days beforehand under the euphemism, 'Special meal' (US).

The choice of a last meal entirely depends on the prisoner themselves. So, some death row prisoners may choose to order a favorite meal which very likely they haven’t tasted since they were arrested, some would choose to order a great feast, or even ask for things they've never eaten before, just out of curiosity. They are a few prisoners who completely refuse to order anything for their last meal, most times in silent protest. Some death row prisoners have been known to intentionally request for bizarre, interesting or strange last meals. This is a list of those top strangest last meal request ever made in history.


1. Garry Karl Simmons Junior.
Age: 49
Mode of Execution: Lethal Injection
Date: June 2012

Garry was more likely, greedy as he was terrible. He took the life of a man named Jeffery Wolf because according to him, wolf owed him a whopping $20,000. Nevertheless, he is remarkably known because of what he ordered for his very last meal. You could guess why, this was because he requested for more than any one person would could actually eat.
He ordered a Pizza hot supreme, deep dish pizza with double mushrooms, double onions, double jalapeno poppers, double pepperoni, a second pizza with 3 cheeses, olives, bell peppers, tomatoes garlic and Italian sausage, also 10 cups of ranch dressing, 8 ounces of jalapeno nacho cheese, 4 ounces of sliced jalapenos. Upon all this requested for 20 ounce cherry cokes, 2 large strawberry milkshakes, 2 pints of strawberry ice cream and to top it all off 1 big family sized packet of Doritos nacho cheese.
The calorie count of this gigantic feast was about 29,000 calories. Imagine that!



2. Robert Dale Conklin.
Age: 44
Mode of Execution: Lethal Injection
Date: 12 July, 2005

In the year 2000, Robert stabbed his live-in male lover to death with a screw driver and then chopped up his body, isn't that so ridiculously evil! He was later arrested and sentenced to death, and for his last meal he asked for a bacon wrapped filet mignon steak. He wanted sautéed shrimps (de-veined)in garlic butter with lemon on the side. He wanted a baked potato filled with sour cream, chives, bacon bits and hollandaise sauce. He also wanted bread, but it had to be a French baguette, buttered and filled with goats cheese. For dessert he asked for apple pie, cantaloupe and vanilla bean ice cream. His drink of choice was a single iced Tea.

3. John Wayne Gacy Jr.

Age: 52
Mode of Execution: Lethal Injection
Date: 10, May 1994
This serial Killer, also known as Pogo the clown, murdered and sexually assaulted about 33 young boys, after he had lured them into his house. Gacy was an unusual killer since he was a successful business man and a trusted member of his community, where he often did his pogo the clown for the neighborhood kids.
For his last meal, he ordered 12 deep fried shrimps, a whole bucket full of chicken from KFC, fries, a pound of strawberries and a bottle of diet coke. It seemed he was watching his weight!

4. Steve Michael Woods Jr.
Age: 31
Mode of Execution: Lethal Injection
Date: 13th September, 2011

Steve was alleged to have killed a man and his girlfriend, and a man and his wife, to which he claimed innocence on both charges but the law was already up against him. While in prison, he became an activist for prisoners from behind bars and certainly felt entitled to so much that it was reflected in a crazy last meal request.
He ordered for 2 pounds of bacon, a large full meat pizza, 4 fried chicken; 2 drinks each of mountain dew, Pepsi, root bear and sweet tea. He added 2 pint of ice cream, 5 fried chicken steaks, 2 hamburgers with bacon fries and a dozen garlic bread sticks with marinara sauce on the side.

5. James Edward Smith.

Age: 37
Mode of Execution: Lethal Injection.
Date: 26th June 1990
James has one of the weirdest last meal request of all time. After seeing a clerk at an insurance office counting huge amounts of money, James decided to rob the office. During the robbery, he shot and killed one of the agents at the office and so he sentenced to doom.
For his last meal request, he asked for some dirt (sand) instead of a decent meal. This was because according to him, it would be used for a voodoo ritual that would allow his spirit transcend peacefully after death so as not to become a ghost. This request was not approved and instead he was given a cup of yogurt which he declined. Actually, he was a practicing voodoo priest before his arrest.

6. Steven Anderson.

Age: 48
Mode of Execution: Lethal Injection
Date: 29th Jan, 2002

He was executed by the state of California. He assassinated about 7 people during one burglary, escaped from prison once. As for his last meal he asked for two grilled cheese sandwiches, a pint of cottage cheese, some corn, a slice of peach pie, chocolate chip ice cream and strangely radishes, a pretty insane request for a last meal.

7. Angel Nieves Diaz.

Age: 55
Mode of Execution: Lethal Injection
Date: 13th Dec 2006
Mr Angel was sentenced to execution in Florida for various crimes ranging from kidnapping, armed robbery and murder of several people. He said he was totally innocent but at the age of 55 it was made certain that his time on earth were numbered.
Angel did something that shocked everyone because, no other prisoner on death row had done such. He declined any last special last meal. Now, when this happens, the prison has to serve you a regular persons meal, but this he declined as well. What was the point eating when you know you’re going to die?

8. David Leon Woods.

Age: 43
Mode of Execution: Lethal Injection
Date: 4th May 2007

The last meal of David could best be considered creepy for the situation. During a burglary, David murdered an old man of about 77 years of age and so was sentenced to execution in Indiana USA.
When asked by the prison guards what he would want as his last meal, he shocked everyone by saying that he would want a pizza and a Birthday cake! On another request he choose to eat his last meal with members of his family.

9. O’Dell Barnes Jr.

Age: 31
Mode of Execution: Lethal Injection
Date: 1st March, 2000

This is probably the most unlikely last meal request. Barnes had been convicted for the murder of a woman named Helen Bass. A lot of people were against his sentence and execution including the government of France.But, in year 2000, he was sent on death row to meet his fate.
When asked for his last meal, he declined any food but said he wanted and I quote, “Justice, Equality and World Peace,” as his last meal. Indeed, he wanted a whole lot more but also a whole lot less at the same time.

10. Victor Harry Feguer.

Age: 28
Mode of Execution: Hanging
Date: 15th March 1963.

Victor was the last person to be legally executed in the state of Iowa. He had taken the life of a physician by the name Dr. Edward Bartels. It was believed he did this to try and get access to the drugs the doctor had, meant for patients!
His last meal request was a single olive with its pit still attached to it. He told the guards that he hoped that an olive tree would sprout from his grave as a sign of peace. The olive was discovered in his suit pocket after his execution and was buried with him.

11. Ronnie Lee Gardner

Age: 49
Mode of Execution: Firing Squad
Date: June 18 2010

Do you like Lord of the rings? Well am sure you don’t like it more than this guy whose last wish included watching the whole trilogy. Ronnie was convicted for killing a man, whom he shot in the face.
For his last meal, he would request a steak, lobster tails, apple pie with vanilla ice cream and a 7up to drink. Now, these might seem pretty normal but in a twist, he requested to watch the whole trilogy of the Lord of the rings which was granted before his execution.

12. Tory Davis.

Age: 42
Mode of Execution: Lethal Injection
Date:21st Sept. 2011

Tory Davis was convicted of taking the life of a cop named Mark MacPhail, he did seem to be the likely person who took this cop’s life. However, he always maintained his innocence and a lot of groups and prominent individuals e.g the Amnesty International, Pope Francis XVI, Arc. Bishop Desmond tutu urged a reversal of death penalty for a man they claimed was innocent; the guardian even made a top ten list why Tory should not be executed. Nevertheless he was executed by the state of Georgia. He refused the last meal and said in a twist that this would not be his last meal. That’s a very ominous last meal request!

13. Lawrence Russell Brewer.

Age: 44
Mode of Death: Lethal Injection.
Date: 21st Sept, 2011
Lawrence was a white supremacist and convicted for the gruesome murder of one African-American named James Byrd Jr. Before his execution, he ordered, 2 fried chicken, steak, a triple meat bacon, half a loaf of bread, a large omelet, a meat lovers pizza, 3 cans of soda, a peanut butter fudge, 3 fajitas and a pound of Ice cream. He was served all these food for his last meal but surprisingly did not eat any of it, he just said that he wasn't hungry. Because of his bizarre stunt the state of Texas banned such practices of serving a last meals.

14. Philip Ray Walkman.

Age: 53
Mode of Execution: Lethal Injection
Date: 9th May 2007

Walkman was a drug addict who was convicted for the murder of a police officer after he attempted robbing a Wendy fast food restaurant. He had a last meal request that did not go down well with the prison authorities and so was denied.
For his meal, he requested that a large vegetarian pizza was delivered to the homeless throughout his home state of Tennessee. When people got to discover his last meal request, they began taking pizzas to homeless shelters throughout the state on the day of his execution. At least he died with one good act!

15. Robert Alton Harris.

Age: 39 yrs
Mode of Execution: Gas Chambers
Date: 21st April 1992

He was found guilty of murdering two teenagers in 1978. For his last meal, He ordered 21 pieces of KFC Chicken in a Bucket, 2 Large Domino’s pizza with no anchovies, a tub of Ice cream, a bag of jelly beans and a six pack of Pepsi.

At times I feel prison conditions are too harsh. I feel this way because of innocent souls who found themselves there. Imprisonmen should be about restricting access to reduce or eliminate chance of harming others and not as much a punishment. From experience, some are innocent.
