I am currently a student in Ahmadu Bello University Zaria. I applied for Computer Science but I was offered Statistics. I had no other options than to go for it. I have been at home with no admission for 3 years and my junior brother would also be writing Jamb next year, so you see?

Well I discovered that I haven't really think about the course Statistics because I have always dreamt of being a computer scientist, I even learnt how to code while at home. But this statistics is like a new world to me. I want to know what and what I will be facing as a statistician, what kind of career field are available or open for someone who read statistics.

If all you can think of is where to work after graduation then you are mentally lazy, even people who study Petroleum Engineering are still looking for work after 10 years of graduation.

Statistics degree doesnt stop you from being a programmer as they are both Numerical science, thats why my school combine both statistics and computer science. Most IT and programmer job the qualification they ask is to simply be a graduate in either mathematics, statistics or computer science

Rather than thinking of where to work after graduation. Think of what you can do yourself.
Data science is a new area where lots of guys are investing their time and making a living.
Equip yourself in such IT skills and you'll have gained ground even before earning your degree.

But if you are still interested in working for someone, then you can work almost anywhere. Most entry level positions in Nigeria require no specialised degree. Just bag a upper second class or first class.

You just dodged a bullet. Computer science is scam in Nigeria. You are better off learing statistics or mathematics, then delve into programming personally...i.e. taking programming professional courses as these ones will teach you well. Most Nigerian computer lecturers know almost nothing.

You can work anywhere, just get a skill.

I know someone who studied statistics and he is currently working as a software engineer.

See how someone is underrating statistics. Statistics is very lucrative in Nigeria if u know ur worth but statistics as a course is not a child play. U need to study hard and smart to come out in flying colour. There are many opportunities as a statistics graduate. U can work in a bank, multinational organisations just to mention a few.

Make sure you develop yourself in programming, data science and also get some certifications while in school. In the future, lots of data analysts will be needed.

Your focus should be what u can create to add to the body of knowledge after graduation and not where to work. Once you can fill a knowledge gap, ur services will be needed globally. I bet that if you focus myopically on where u can work, technological advancement will replace u someday or someone without a degree in ur field will be trained on how to use relevant statistical softwares to do the job you spent years to study
