Covid-19 has forced the world to embrace a "new normal" - a new way of living and doing things while being cognisant of the risks the virus pose. This is no different for schools.

Upon returning to school on Monday 08 June for only Grades 7 and 12, pupils in South Africa will need to embrace a new schooling environment compared to the one they left - one which aims to protect them from a new, largely unknown threat.

But what might this look like?

Research has been conducted into what worked in other countries while also engaging local parents.

Children who want to return to school will be put into two groups - red and blue. Each group attends school on different days while the others continued with online learning.

In other words, it's a blended learning approach with two out of five days on campus and three online at home.

As a result, school grounds will be under 30% occupancy per day (including teachers and admin staff) - well within the legislated health and safety protocols.

Some schools will also implement separate starting times for pupils as well as assisted organised entry where parents are not allowed inside the school and they are screened and sanitised at the gate.

Foot-operated sanitising stations are available around the school, social distancing points are painted on the ground for break time (in social circles) and physical education.

For now only 2 grades are returning to school - Grade 7 and Grade 12. Those classes themselves which usually average around 30-40 learners will be divided into smaller separate classes.

So the trick is not to allow all children at school at once.

It can.

It’s just about having separate classes:
Morning session; and
Evening session.

They can also rotate -
Monday Wednesday and Friday for a set; and
Tuesday Thursday and Saturday for another set.

It’s just about finding a way to adjust learning Experience to Reflect present realities.

This Coronavirus might be with us for the next 1-2 years till a Vaccine is produced. Until then, life must somehow continue!

What means does it take to maintain social distancing?
If countries like Haiti, Nepal & Laos are practicing social distancing what excuse do you have not to do same? Population? Indonesia and Bangladesh and practicing it, so what? Clout chasing? Stupidity? A fool and his internet access? Yea more like it.

Have you ever taught in a school before? especially Junior and primary school in a public school? Where we have more than 70 students in a class and less chairs and desk for each students? Where the classroom is very small to even accommodate 40students but 80students will be compelled into learning in such environment .....

How do you expect social distancing to be effective?

You should learn to debate without using abusive words....

I left teaching because of this challenges....The government isn't doing enough for primary and secondary school board Managements and teachers salary....

Our educational sector is a mess and nothing can work perfectly.....

Private schools can keep to the social distancing....but public schools will fail....

Do you know that public schools don't have enough teachers? and government isn't employing teachers to meet each subjects??

The workforce will be too much on the teachers especially mathematics teachers and English Language teachers...

And they will have to write lesson notes and other requirements?

Any debate/argument you see someone using derogatory words, I believe it's either to make up for what they can't prove or simply what they contain and have to offer.

Next time ignore such people. Though your advice was divine.

Everything you read over there was either half truths, exaggerations and lies. There was no so called "killings of Nigerians" here in South Africa. Looting yes, large scale killing, hell no!. The funny thing is though, Africa has had a history of brutal ethnic killing in many African states and yet the " xenophobic looting" gets more coverage and everyone around the continent uses it as leverage to insult South Africans, it's hypocrisy of the highest order. People who also know very little of South Africa are the loudest ones

The hate and obsession is really bizarre because the two countries don't owe each other any favours and are so further apart in terms of geographic positioning.I don't understand this.

At least when deport them we place them in aeroplanes, unlike their neighbour Cameroon that forces them into cattle trucks like animals.

This can only work in 'big' private schools which already was the norm

Most government schools in Lag don't even have space for this, overcrowded with pupils using makeshift desk and chairs

Even with three sessions, can't accommodate all students in a class
