No surprises here...

Now, take a look at your map and you will find out that the Mexican state of Oaxaca[the epicenter of this particular earthquake] is on the Western coast of Mexico- that means its coastline lies right next to the Pacific Ocean.

And that ultimately puts it in the region known to geographers and seismologists alike as the "Pacific ring of fire", a region of the earth that is highly prone to very violent quakes and volcanic activities.

That particular one was 8.8 on the richter scale.

Same Chile recorded 9.5 in the 1960s.
