I have noticed Nigerians are usually afraid of surgeries and see it as 50:50 thing.
That's not how it should be.
The most common cause of death in the theatre is anaesthetic complications and transfusion reactions.
There's nothing to be afraid of if these areas are properly handled.
Discuss the mode of anaesthesia with your doctor.
Let the anaesthesia be handled by doctors trained in that area, ie an Anaesthetist.
They'll charge you a little bit more for that, but the patient will be safer, especially if its spinal anaesthesia in this case.
Let the doctor not be both the Surgeon and the Anaesthetist in the theatre, as do often do in most private hospitals.
The extra bill won't kill anyone.

When there is lack of professionalism everywhere why won't people be scared. Our hospitals are where people go to die.

There's no hospital in the world where people don't die.
Nigeria's case may be different because of lots of factors, which include:
1. Most of the hospitals are not well equipped because there's no investment in the healthcare system in Nigeria. A poor country can't have a world class healthcare system.
2. Most Nigerians are poor and can't afford standard care in places that render it. There are places in Nigeria where the above woman would be charged in millions, with every bit of professionalism assured, but she may not be able to afford it.
3. Most Nigerians only go to the hospital when they're already in critical conditions, eg, like the woman above delaying till the cyst ruptures. That's not obtainable with most patients in advanced countries.
4. There's dearth of specialists in Nigeria relative to the population
5. Nigerians don't go to the hospitals and request to be attended to by a specialist in that area. Most don't even know there's specialization in medicine, compared to their counterparts abroad. The outcome of a case handled by a specialist can't be the same as the one handled by a non-specialist in that area.

Please do not delay surgery. Surgery is corrective and a pathway to healing. You do not want that cyst to burst. Prayers sent her way

Congratulations and thank you for sharing your story. Was it a private hospital it was done? How big is her scar and how long did she spend in recovery post operation?
Government general hospital, it took another 3 years before she could conceive. and her case was serious b4 she was operated on.

What is wrong with people? @op, you left the professional advice of career medical doctors, after tests and diagnosis, and came on nairaland to listen to all sorts of opinion with no filter, even the most ignorant person's advice will factor into your decision now. You didn't even seek a second opinion in another hospital or get advice from a specialist.
Well, I will hazard a guess on what you want, you want to be told of a "herbal remedy" that can wipe out the cyst right? Beware though, time is ticking, people die due to wanton experimentation and the wastage of time.
That's my own advice you asked for
Thanks.

Dear Op, don't be too scared about the ovarian cyst surgery. it's not as difficult as people think if properly supervised by competent hands. my worries for you is money because the surgery is very expensive(#500k or #900k for the two different medical processes). my friend had the same case and she was operated in February, 2020 with a successful result and she is doing fine. she did hers at Lagoon private hospital, Awolowo way, ikeja, so government teaching hospital charges should be less than private hospitals' charges.

please call : 07080111660 (Michael)

Quick recovery.
900k for an ovarian cystectomy and you compounded matters by advertising for the facility.
"Anyhowness" and lawlessness in Nigeria have emboldened many of you to be doing things which in saner climes would get your the facility in big trouble.

Most low-cost private hospitals do that to save cost, as patients pay poorly.
Anaesthetists charge about 30,000 to 40,000 when they're invited.
A patient that pays a total of 30,000 for Appendectomy or Herniorrhaphy will, of course, have the doctor as both the surgeon and the Anaesthetist, as the money is not even enough to pay off the Anaesthetist.
And that could end in tears.
The same open Appendectomy or open Herniorrhaphy in the US is about $25,000( over 9million naira).
Truth is healthcare is expensive all over the world, and shouldn't be "managed".
When you're willing to "manage", you've agreed to have the standard compromised.
And both you and the doctor should share the blame.

I had a 50mm x 45mm hemorraghic cyst once and it resolved by itself after 2 menstrual cycles. They usually don't operate unless it gets really big as it could lead to ovarian torsion.
The one sensible answer here so far.
Usually medical management is the preferred first choice.
Many resolve on their own.
Some women are even placed on oral contraceptive pills that usually resolve it.
Unless there is clear sign that the woman's health is compromised,no one resolves to do an ovarian cyst surgery, participarly in a teaching, specialist or government hospital setting where things are expected to be done in a standardized way since there is no compulsion to make money for the hospital.

I think I understand why they do. Of course like you, I don’t agree. I thought I knew some stuff about healthcare at home. Apparently I don’t.

Also they pay 40k for anesthesia service? Like for that very very hard work? That’s terrible but I digress

Am into core herbal healing and have treated well on this.... am available with those within Lagos environs that need to see me on it one on one for effectively treatment as well on tubal blockage...

What's scary about undergoing surgery? You Nigerians make me sick. This is as a result of too much religious indoctrination that makes everything evil in the eyes of an average Nigerian. See the surgery as a means to solve an existing problem than seeing it as a problem on it's own. It becomes a problem when you embrace quack Doctors. Even the so-called educated are not left out of the religious foolishness. I am a Christian but I choose how I follow and detect foolishness when I see one.
How does Christianity cause fear of surgeries or any medical procedure? If you say nonchalance, maybe true because some Christians ignore the fact that God works miracles through people and inventions are natural products of the inbuilt intelligence given by God. fear is a natural reaction to perceived danger. fear is not encouraged in Christian doctrines. Blame illiteracy instead because, any knowledge acquired would be useless without an ability to apply it.

You've not seen anything yet.
There's poverty in the country.
Before I ran away from there, a patient once priced me 15,000 for inguinal Herniorrhaphy and insisted on paying nothing more. And he told me about other doctors doing it at that amount.
The easiest way to be a pauper is to practice in Nigeria as a healthcare professional.
Majority are poor and, unfortunately, constitute the bulk of the patients.

This your comparison is highly flawed.
Herniorapphy in India with same outcome as in US is just about $400 on average.
Many Americans troop to India,Mexico and China to perform surgeries at fraction of the cost in the US.
Even in UK with a very high medical care, hernia surgery is about $3000,so what is your point?
Outcome does not usually equate to cost of an operation. It musn't be expensive to be successful or to be without complications.

ok. Please is how dangerous is cyst seen on the breast? Is it as dangerous as breast cancer? Thanks

It all depends on the type of cyst.

Is it simple or complex type??

First if you suspect you have a breast mass, you should go for examination.

An ultrasound of the breast should reveal what it is.

And if its a cyst, it should also describe it very well with all the features.

From here whatever it is can then be tackle

Don't be too anxious to say its breast cancer
