From Uzoma Nzeagwu, Awka

GOVERNOR Peter Obi of Anambra State yesterday disclosed that his administration is set to embrace mechanized farming, pointing out that it is very vital to the development of the agriculture sector.

Obi gave the indication when he paid a scheduled visit to a private farm, AUSCO Farms, at Agu Awka. He said high-scale farming would ensure effective harnessing of agricultural potential to achieve food security, strengthen the economy and create employment.

He explained that the visit was in line with the policy of his administration to personally identify where to encourage entrepreneurs and also help to explore areas of collaboration, adding that his government is determined to fulfill the promise of generating at least 1,000 jobs directly and indirectly.

On why he embarked on visits to various industries in the state, Obi explained that the government wants to encourage them, pointing out that the visit was also extended to all large-scale enterprises including large-scale farms in Anambra, which are capable of adding value to the state. He enjoined other citizens of Anambra to see the sector as an area worthy of investment and promised them of continued government support.

The governor, who said he was impressed with what was on the ground in the farm, assured that the government would give it all necessary support to remain viable, including prompt approval to access funds from financial institutions.

The owner of the farm, Austin Ndigwe, who conducted the governor around the farm, said he invested over N750 million in the project. He hinted that he would increase the staff strength from 89 to 250 within this quarter of the year.

Ndigwe said he invested in the farm to contribute to the development of agriculture and try to correct the wrong impression that Anambra indigenes are not interested in farming.

Ndigwe, who described Obi as a committed and responsible leader, said he was particularly impressed by the governor's constant advice to the people of Anambra to invest at home.
