My reason for choosing 4 is, having succeeded in killing 30 out of the entire 34 persons in the room, one thing or the other must have prevented the killer from killing the remaining 4, which I think, the remaining 4 persons rushed the killer, overpowered and murdered him or her.

The Op did not ask about the number of dead people in the room neither did he ask of the number of alive people in the room.
The first sentence and the actions that followed were simply red herring tactics(to throw you of guard)

The answer is straight forward which is 35!

Remember, the number of people in the room where 34.
Op joined which the number of people in the room to increase to 35.

Now 30 persons were killed among the 34 +1(op)people in the room.
Mathematically :
34+1=35.
35-30=5.


Total number of persons in tge room before Op entered :34.
Total Number of people after Op entered :35.
