President Muhammadu Buhari in faraway United Kingdom gave reasons why he declared his intention to seek re-election in 2019, saying he joined the race to silence naysayers. Buhari while playing host to the Archbishop of Canterbury, His Grace Justin Welby in London on Wednesday, said, “I declared before leaving home because Nigerians were talking too much about whether I would run or not. “So, I felt I should break the ice. We have many things to focus on, like security, agriculture, economy, anti-corruption, and many others. We needed to concentrate on them, and politics should not be a distraction. The majority of Nigerians appreciate what we are doing, and that is why I am re-contesting”, the president said. It would be recalled that ex-Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida had at various times championed opposition against the second term ambition of Muhammadu Buhari, citing gross failures and ineptitude in his style of administering the country since 2015 when the government came on board. They had also played up the age factor, insisting that the president was too old to govern the country effectively, hence should take a deserved rest. Buhari had taken stakeholders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) by surprise during their National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Monday at the party’s secretariat to declare his intention to seek office for a second term. Shortly after he let the cat out of the bag, he jetted out of the country to the United Kingdom where he is to meet with British Prime Minister Theresa May, prior to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meetings scheduled for April 18 to 20, 2018. According to a statement by Presidential Spokesman, Femi Adesina, the president’s success stories cuts across various sectors of the economy, with agriculture being the most significant. “We have cut the importation of rice by about 90%, saving billions of dollars in the process. People who rushed into petrol money have now gone back to agriculture. Even professionals have gone back to the land. Nigeria should be able to feed itself comfortably soon. I am so pleased,” the statement quoted Buhari as saying. On war against insurgency, Buhari told his guest that the crisis that consumed former Libyan leader, Muammar Gadhafi, cannot be extricated from the current farmers-herders crisis, as arms found their way into the wrong set of people, a development that culminated in the Boko Haram issue as well. He noted that there was a need for continuous education of the people “so that they can be free from religious manipulation,” adding that no true religion advocates the hurting or killing of the innocent. Responding to his guest’s comment on the clashes between herdsmen and farmers in different parts of Nigeria, the president submitted, “The problem is even older than us. It has always been there, but now made worse by the influx of armed gunmen from the Sahel region into different parts of the West African sub-region. These gunmen were trained and armed by Muammar Gadhafi of Libya. When he was killed, the gunmen escaped with their arms. We encountered some of them fighting with Boko Haram. Herdsmen that we used to know carried only sticks and maybe a cutlass to clear the way, but these ones now carry sophisticated weapons. The problem is not religious, but sociological and economic. But we are working on solutions.” He lamented that “irresponsible politics” has been brought into the farmers-herders’ crisis, but assured that enduring solutions would be found, and justice done to all concerned. On Leah Sharibu, the schoolgirl from Dapchi still being held by insurgents, reportedly because she refused to renounce her Christian faith, the president said, “We are managing the matter quietly. Making noise would not help. We are collecting as much intelligence as possible, working with the Red Cross and other international organisations. There are too many fraudulent people around, who claim they can do this and that. We won’t deal with them. That was how we got the Dapchi girls back, and the Chibok girls.” In his response, Archbishop Welby said it was always a delight to see President Buhari, whom he has a tremendous respect for, adding: “You have my best wishes on your recent decision. I read your declaration speech. We are neutral as a church, but we will pray for you. Great statesmen are those who run for the good of their country. We will be praying for you.” The Archbishop presented President Buhari with a copy of his recent book, ‘Re-imagining Britain. Foundations for Hope.’ Terrorism: Buhari Okays Army University In Borno Meanwhile, moves to curb the excesses of terrorism in the country has seen the Federal Government approving the establishment of Nigerian Army University in Biu, Borno State. Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, disclosed this on Wednesday, shortly after the Federal Executive Council meeting, presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. Recall that Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, had, last June, said the army had already reached out to the National Universities Commission (NUC) to secure approval for the university. Buratai had then explained that the university was being designed as a unique and specialised institution that would serve as solutions centre, especially to specific challenges facing the military and North East. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/04/i-declared-bid-for-second-term-to.html

Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, has directed withdrawal of an alleged murder case against the state Chairman of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Chief Jide Awe, and other members of the party. This information was contained in a statement by Fayose’s spokesman, Idowu Adelusi, on Wednesday. Awe, his aide, and other members of the APC have been on trial for alleged murder of Madam Juliana Adewunmi and Murphy Jeje, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, in 2013. Adewunmi was the mother of Segun Adewunmi, the incumbent Deputy Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly. Ekiti State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Kolapo Kolade, at High Court 7, Ado Ekiti, before Justice Bamidele Omotosho, filed an application for the withdrawal of the case against Awe on Wednesday. Kolade said the state was withdrawing the case in order to promote peace and brotherliness among the people of Erinjiyan Ekiti, which is the community where both the complainant and the defendants in the matter hail from. He also said Governor Fayose consented to the withdrawal of the case in spite of political differences because of his belief in posterity, peace and welfare of the people of the community, which was reported to have been divided over the court case. Justice Omotosho, while granting the nod for Kolade’s application, said the court supported the development because it was to promote peace. Speaking with newsmen on the development, Kolade said: “What happened in court today is far beyond politics. “The Governor in his usual characteristic manner of promoting peace and brotherliness in all communities in Ekiti and across party lines has intervened. “In this matter, so many good people across Nigeria, even the defendants in this matter, have appealed to His Excellency to intervene in this matter, particularly in Erijinran, more so as the defendants and complainant are of same family. “The complainants have given the to ahead and said the matter should be withdrawn. “This development equally supports the cause of justice. One of the cardinal principles of justice is promotion of peace. “The major beneficiary is Chief Jide Awe, the APC chairman in Ekiti State. “He, alongside his aide and other party members were alleged to have murdered late Madam Juliana Adewunmi, mother of the Deputy Speaker, Ekiti State, and Murphy Jeje, a member of the PDP, in 2013. “The complainant is the Deputy Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/04/breaking-fayose-orders-withdrawal-of.html

The mastermind of the April 21, 1990, failed coup, Col Tony Nyiam, retd, has said that the recent outburst by TY Danjuma was a direct indictment of President Muhammadu Buhari rather than the country’s Armed Forces. According to Nyiam, the former Minister’s allegations did not indict the corporate establishment of the armed forces, but exposed President Buhari. Nyiam spoke with Sun in Abuja on Tuesday, during the public presentation of ‘M.T. Mbu: Dignity in Service,’ an autobiography of Dr. Matthew Mbu, a former minister of Foreign Affairs, published posthumously by the Executive Chairman of Safari Books Limited, Chief Joop Berkhout. He noted that, “What he was rather saying was that he was indicting the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.” Asked why he said so, Nyiam added, “Because, as it appeared, the armed forces is being used to promote and defend the interest of President Muhammadu Buhari’s kinsfolks’ interest.” Danjuma, a former Minister of Defence, had last month, at the maiden convocation/10th anniversary of Taraba State University, Jalingo, said there was an attempt at ethnic cleansing in the state and, of course, some rural states in Nigeria. Danjuma further called on Nigerians to defend themselves. Buhari had told a group of Northern bishops, who visited him last week, that he is not a bigot that they thought he (Buhari) was. But Nyiam insisted that, “The evidence seems contrary. It is not the talk, but the walk is different. What is my evidence? “The whole 80 percent of the appointees to do with national security, that is, in terms of the Service Chiefs and Directors-General of security agencies; 80 percent are his tribe men. That is bigotry in action. It is not enough to say you are not a bigot. This is the issue.” Nyiam further said what Danjuma said was not new and recalled a revelation by the Director-General of the Department of State Security (DSS), Lawal Daura, during a Senate summit on security that “some of the military arms that they found with the herdsmen, the sophisticated ones, are from the military and police armouries.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/04/what-danjuma-has-done-to-buhari-col.html

Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Enugu State chapter, Dr. Ben Nwoye, has described Buhari’s declaration as a new dawn in Nigeria’s political history. Justifying Buhari’s suitability for re-election, Nwoye expressed confidence that Nigerians will still vote for him in 2019. “One thing you cannot dispute is that Nigerians love Buhari except the oppositions who are even the minority. They will always have their say, while majority of Nigerians will have their way. It is actually a new dawn in the political history of the country. “Before the declaration, there tended to be lack of clarity as to where we were going. But having come out to inform his core followers in a personal capacity one year ahead, we are elated. “There was an eruption of applause and cheering among NEC members when he declared. He has done well in turning the country around. “He has pursued programmes of growth and made the country better. He has shown there is light at the end of the tunnel,” he told journalists in Abuja. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/04/2019-nigerians-will-reelect-buhari.html

Rochas Okorocha, Governor of Imo State, has reacted to President Muhammadu Buhari’s declaration to seek a second term in 2019. Okorocha, who is the chairman of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Governors’ Forum, described the president’s declaration as a “patriotic response to the clarion call of Nigerians for him to lead the country for another four years”. In a statement by his media aide, Sam Onwuemeodo, the governor said Buhari’s declaration would go a long way to reduce the noise of the opposition. Noting that Buhari had done well to deserve a second tenure, Okorocha said, “Those who had wanted to blackmail him out of going for another term can now find other meaningful things to keep themselves busy.” The governor noted that, “The declaration of the president to go for Second tenure would also go a long way to reduce the noise of the opposition and take care of the idiosyncrasies of certain elements in the system”. He said unlike the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, that looted the country for sixteen years, APC does not owe any apologies for its first four years. Okorocha said, “The APC has no apology to make because it has done wonderfully well considering the magnitude of the rot it met on ground in 2015. “The antenna of the opposition in the country will finally be lowered when the campaigns begin and the party will be showing Nigerians its achievements in the states under its control and at the federal level”. He expressed optimism that Buhari “would largely garner more votes in 2019 than he had done in 2015 because most Nigerians, including people of the Southeast have seen that he meant well for the nation and the citizenry”. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/04/2019-what-okorocha-said-about-buharis.html

The Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Anti-Corruption (PACAC), Professor Itse Sagay, has said the federal government omitted some names from the list of alleged treasury looters for strategic reasons. Sagay, who is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), stated this during an interview on Channels Television programme, Sunday Politics. He accused some elites in the country of being violent against the anti-corruption war of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. The senior lawyer noted that while the Federal Government was doing all it could in its resolve to rid Nigeria of corruption, the so-called powerful persons were frustrating the effort. “Government might not have mentioned the names of some individuals due to ‘strategic’ reasons but such reasons would unravel themselves in the course of time. “Nigerians must, however, know this government has poured its heart and might into fighting corruption, but corruption has fought back. “And the shocking aspect is that it is the elites, the educated, the powerful who have been fighting this government. They have been so violent in the opposition to the fight against corruption that one is even shocked,” he said. Despite the challenges of the anti-corruption campaign and the strength of the opposition, the PACAC chairman said he was impressed with the success recorded so far. He disclosed further that a lot of looted assets have been recovered by the government and that part of them was used to fund the current budget. Professor Sagay also reacted to the recent list of alleged looters published by the government. Amid the mixed reaction triggered by the list, the senior advocate noted that there was nothing wrong with it. He recalled that a court had ordered the government to publish the names of those who have looted the nation’s resources, saying the disclosure was in accordance with the court’s directive and to address the issue of public interest. The lawyer said he would not be surprised if more names of alleged looters surface, stressing that “there is a very large number of these people who presided over the looting of the assets of this country.” He was also confident that the judges handling corruption cases cannot be influenced by the views of other people as they have the knowledge to make their own opinion on the facts of the case before them. Reacting to those who have condemned the list, he said, “It’s a free society, the government has provided its own list. “Those who are complaining must surely know the persons who are omitted from the list. So, let them bring out their own list and let them correct the list which is incomplete.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/04/looters-list-why-nigerian-govt-omitted.html

The planned visit of former Abia State Governor, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, to Ekiti State has been rejected by the Ayo Fayose-led State Government. The government advised the former governor to, “take his advocacy for peace to other parts of the country where security of lives and properties of Nigerians is under threat, not Ekiti State that even the Police adjudged as the most peaceful State in the country.” Kalu, who is acting as the Chairman, Advisory Board for the National Movement for Re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari, has embarked on a tour of the South West purportedly to advocate for peace, fairness and unity of the country with a view to rallying support for the President’s second term bid in 2019. However, Ekiti State Government, in a statement issued on Saturday, by the Special Assistant to the governor on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, said that, “There is no threat to peace and unity of Nigeria from Ekiti State for anyone, including Orji Kalu to address. Therefore, he should not expect to be welcomed to any palace in Ekiti State.” The government urged traditional rulers in the State to ignore the former Abia State governor, saying; “it is an insult on the collective sensibilities of Ekiti people, whose only benefit from the government of President Buhari is hardship occasioned by the government’s cluelessness for anyone to hide under advocacy for peace to canvass support for the President.” The government said it was unspeakable that because of his EFCC case, Orji Kalu saddled himself with the task of doing image laundering for a President whose government is inflicting sufferings on Nigerians. The statement reads further; “If he has sold his own conscience to the agenda of selling an already rejected product to Nigerians, we in Ekiti State have not, and we are telling him categorically that such advocacy is not welcome in our State. “He should rather take his peace and unity advocacy to his own State, where he is already rejected and other States where Nigerians are being killed on daily basis by armed bandits. “It is also ridiculous that instead of joining Nigerians to tell the President the truth about the state of affairs in the country, Kalu is castigating Nigerians that have summoned courage to speak out against the President through letters and public comments.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/04/dont-come-to-ekiti-to-campaign-for.html

Oyo State Government on Wednesday said it has set up a special security task force to prevent further cases of kidnapping, particularly in Oke-Ogun geopolitical zone. Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Toye Arulogun who made this known while speaking with journalists in Ibadan, disclosed that adequate security measures had been put in place following the spate of kidnappings in the area. He explained that after various meetings held with famers, herdsmen, traditional rulers, security agencies and other stakeholders, the Governor of the state, Senator Abiola Ajimobi set up the taskforce to look into the spate of kidnappings, maiming and crisis between the herdsmen and farmers in the Oke-Ogun Area. Arulogun while declaring that the taskforce has visited the zone to ascertain the present situation of things in the area, said that the government had mandated security agencies in the state to beef up security around the state and improve on their intelligence gathering, stating that these efforts had been yielding positive results with the arrest of some suspected kidnappers by the security agencies. He said that the increase in surveillance by the security agencies has doused the tension in the area, assuring that the state government will continue to provide adequate measures to ensure that lives and properties are secured in the state. Arulogun said “The security situation in the State is not as bad as being portrayed by some mischievous individuals. The breach was more from external than internal persons. Our administration is known for peace, safety and security. This is evident in the 4-Star rating as a Well Qualified State to help foreign and domestic investors given by the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC). Also, the state was adjudged as the 4th best investment friendly state and one of the only five states that attracted investment to the country in the last quarter of 2017 by the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS). “It is based on the peaceful cum secured environment that new businesses are springing up with a renaissance of the night economy in the state and government is getting a lot of investment requests. We cannot allow anything to disrupt the peace in the state and that is the reason the Governor setup a taskforce to address the issue of Oke Ogun in addition to the existing security apparatus. “The security agencies in Oyo State are living up to expectation and we should all join hands with them to ensure that security is not breached in the state. We should commend them for their improved intelligence as well as pro-activeness to ensure that the state is not turned to crisis torn state. On our part, government will not renege to provide adequate security for its people and support all the security agencies to perform their duties well.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/04/oyo-sets-up-taskforce-over-incessant.html

Ahead of the 2019 general elections, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo appears to be heading for the rocks. This is as the various wings of the Igbo group are heading for different direction over their stand on the election. MC EBISCO reports that the Ohanaeze Youth Congress, OYC, in a statement issued on Monday accused the President General of Ohanaeze, Chief Nnia Nwodo of mortgaging the interest of Ndigbo. The OYC statement followed its meeting held in Enugu, where it passed a vote of no confidence on Nwodo, who they accused of sidelining other members of the Ohanaeze National Executive Council. The statement was signed by OYC President, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro and Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, the Secretary General. It read it parts: “It is with great sense of dismay and clear picture of the present debased Ohanaeze politics that we the fledgling members of the Ohanaeze Youth Council, OYC, summoned an emergency security meeting and met today, April 2nd, 2018 being Easter Monday, because it has dawned on us and every other conscious Igbo that the President General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo has not only lost leadership mantle but veered out of the way and is hell bent to push the Ohanaeze and Ndigbo to a political cul-de-sac. “We averred that it is high time Ndigbo rose up before Nwodo commits political suicide that would burn our hands and identity and it will only need articulate youths and wise elders and technocrats to rescue Ohanaeze Ndigbo from Nwodo’s clique and thereby, save Igbo Nation from plausible political suicide.” The statement claimed that “out of 24-man executive of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Nwodo uses an illegal organ of Forum Of States’ Presidents against the Constitution Of Ohanaeze to subdue, intimidate and humiliate other Ohanaeze Ndigbo executive members and thereby, forming a cabal and constituting a menace against the democratically elected members of Ohanaeze youths and women. “In view of the foregoing, we the Ohanaeze Youth Wing, OYW presently at the receiving ends of Nwodo’s political forays and not in a haste to adopt or support any presidential candidate to avoid a repeat of the Igbo’s 2015 fate choice, that he pressures for, hereby, passed votes of no confidences on Chief Nnia Nwodo and his Ohanaeze Ndigbo presidency and we give him 7 days to appear before the Ohanaeze Disciplinary committee to explain and answer for his political infidelity against Igbos.” They listed what they called issued before Nwodo to include: “Why did he go against the Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s tradition and Constitution and abused his office by paying loyalty to Alh Atiku Abubakar immediately after his election on 10h January 2017,and after he was queried by his NEC, he told them that his 1st official visit to Atiku,a Northerner, was to discuss the ill-health of President Buhari, who he believed is in bad condition; “He has rendered the office of the secretary General Impotent, which according to Ohanaeze Constitution is the engine room of the organization and custodian of Ohanaeze Secretariat. He carefully appointed Director of Administration without Ime Obi approval thus assuming the powers of Secretary General through his political appointee, Director of Administration; “He has closed down the Publicity Department of Ohanaeze by not giving the Publicity Department the liberty which his friend the spokesman of Afenifere enjoys, rather he is now the President General and Publicity Secretary using his media aide against the official spokesman of Ohanaeze Ndigbo; “He has failed to audit the accounts of Ohanaeze within the last 12 months against the Ohanaeze Ndigbo constitution, which recommends for a periodic audit and accountability. “Ohanaeze Ndigbo is a social cultural organization but he has converted it into a political organization; he already has a presidential candidate from the Northeast and is trying to impose him on Ndigbo through his deceitful message on restructuring, and will subsequently bring his brother as the running mate; “The height of disgrace was at the handshake Across the Niger; in the history of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, no President General has been humiliated like him; the obvious outrage by our women going naked in an event that had chieftains of Afenifere, Middle belt, PANDEF and others, it is a clear testimony that he has soiled the premium position of President General of Ohanaeze and must step aside; “The loss of confidence from Igbo youths, especially the Biafra agitators who have threatened to burn down South East if Nwodo hosts any public function on restructuring, is the height of elder’s rascality and to avert any public disturbances in any town by the threat of Biafra agitators, and consequently declare state of emergency in any state in South East, because of Public loss of confidence on Nwodo, he should step aside.” “Therefore, we the teeming Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youths passe vote of no confidence on Nnia Nwodo and call Ndigbo and Nigerians to ignore him; he should not speak for Ndigbo again until he clears himself of these constitutional breaches he committed. We also call on the federal government and state governors to be wary of Nwodo. “He has seven days from April 2nd to defend himself, or face the consequences of all he had done against Ndigbo. He is expected to appear before the Chairman of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Disciplinary Committee headed by Crown Prince Christian Dimkpa with immediate effect,” the Youth Wing further stated. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/04/2019-ohanaeze-president-nwodo-gets-7.html

About 750 criminals, including cattle rustlers, bandits and kidnappers have sworn an oath to abandon their illegal activities in Anchau village, Kubau local government area of Kaduna State. Reports have it that 400 of the repentant criminals swore by the Qur’an three weeks ago while another batch of 350 took an oath on Saturday to abandon their criminal way of life. The state Commissioner of Police, CP Austin Iwar, told newsmen on Sunday that the criminals were made to repent after intensive dialogue involving community leaders. According to him, the repentant criminals took advantage of the window of opportunity opened by the government and the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris. He said that as part of the programme, those who renounced violence would also handover their weapons to government. The police commissioner, however, said that the recovery of arms would not be made public, so as to build trust and encourage other criminals operating in the state to also forsake and repent of their criminal acts. “I assure you very soon we will begin to recover most of these arms, as some of them have volunteered to handover their arms back, but not in public,” the commissioner of police assured. He said that the repentant criminals were using the deep forests in the area as hideout from where they terrorise members of the communities. Iwar explained, “One of the strategies we decided to adopt is to see how we can get across to some communities’ leaders in the context of community policing programme we are doing. “If you want to solve a problem you have to work with people that created the problem; we also held series of meetings with hunters as prelude to the series of activities we call Renouncing Violence Strategies.” Iwar described the event as very important to the efforts being made to restore peace and stability in the state. He added, “Having young people that are roaming in the bush committing all forms of crimes to come out and renounce violence, swear by Holy Qur’an that they will not go back to violence again is very important. “You will understand that it is a very difficult decision for a criminal to come out in public and renounce the atrocities he has been doing.” Also speaking, Head of Anchau Vigilante Service, Malam Audu Sallau, commended the security operatives for their total support to the programme. Sallau said, “None of the repentant criminals was forced to do so, they voluntarily saw reason to renounce violence, and since the commencement of the programme our communities are now relatively peaceful.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/04/750-kidnappers-cattle-rustlers-others.html

Federal Government’s project of ending medical tourism abroad is to start with the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) and seven other hospitals in the country. Olorogun O’tega Emerhor, Chairman of the Board of Management of the UITH, dropped this hint when he addressed newsmen after his board held its inaugural meeting at the hospital in Ilorin. Emerhor said the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari was determined to end the practice, by many influential Nigerians, of jettisoning medical facilities in the country for treatment in abroad. He disclosed that parts of efforts being made by the government to achieve this is to significantly fund the nation’s medical facilities and build capacities of the medical personnel. Emerhor who said that the arrangement has been captured in this year budget with plan to also be included in the next budget disclosed that the government has selected eight hospitals among which is UITH as beneficiaries. He disclosed that when Prof. Isaac Adewole, the Minister of Health, inaugurated the board, he instructed the board of the vision of the president about making the UITH a part of hospitals with which to achieve the objective of ending medical tourism abroad. “Our job is simply to build on what has been achieved so far and to take the University Teaching Hospital further down the road of improvement, development and ensuring that we become a world-class university teaching hospital where the services we provide will can compete with other similar teaching hospital around the world. “To become a tourist destination, our hospital must be such that Nigeria can have confidence to come here to treat themselves, instead of going outside Nigeria. It also means that people from other countries will be coming here to receive treatment instead of all of us tripping to India, America, to the UK to treat. This is the objective; this is the vision of Mr. President, pass to us through the Minister of health.” The UITH chairman who noted that reliance couldn’t be placed on fund from the government alone to achieve the planned objective, disclosed that the hospitals would further source for fund from international organisation private sectors with which it would partner. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/03/how-fg-plans-to-end-medical-tourism.html

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has suspended 205 staff over various unwholesome roles in the 2015 general elections. INEC’s Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this in his keynote address at national colloquium organised by the Independent Service Delivery Monitoring Group (ISDMG) on Tuesday in Abuja. He said that the interdiction, recommended by INEC’s Appointments, Promotion and Discipline Committee (APDC), was the highest so far. Mr. Mahmud said that constructive criticisms from the public had helped the commission to get better in delivering its mandate vis-a-vis conducting credible elections. He said that commission’s electoral officers were already in the field working towards the success of the 2019 elections. “We have to put the right people in place as electoral officers and assistant electoral officers for the 2019 general elections. “The credibility of an election depends on the credibility of the election manager; the credulity of the election manger depends on the credibility of the staff. “The APDC recommended the interdiction of 205 staff found culpable in various roles they played arising from the 2015 general elections—this is the highest number of interdictions since the history of the commission. “We have within the some of the most patriotic staff in the country; but anybody found wanting will be dealt with accordingly.’’ He said that the introduction of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) had increased voter registration. The INEC boss listed the top states in CVR as Rivers, Anambra, Borno, Delta, Lagos, Cross-River, Osun, Enugu, Kano and Plateau. Mr Mahmud said the commission had conducted elections in 179 constituencies so far, adding that of only five had been challenged in court which attested to the credibility of the elections. He said that at present, INEC had received over 100 additional applications for new political parties, while nine had met the criteria. “We may end up having up to 80 political parties for the 2019 general elections,’’ he said. The INEC chairman gave an assurance that the 2019 elections would be better than that of 2015. Earlier in his speech, Chima Amadi, the Executive Director, ISDMG, said that INEC had been the most responsive of all government agencies involved in the election value chain. He said that INEC had been taking advice and constructive criticisms and adjusting its activities to reflect same while such could not be said about others within the chain. “The security agencies continue to behave true to type and are even getting worse, while political gladiators horn their manipulative stock-in-trade. “However, we are resolved to take them to task with the same resilience that we used in getting INEC to act properly. “For the 2019 elections, the ISDMG will be deploying cutting edge technology to the field to ensure that history is properly documented,’’ he said. The highlight of the event was the unveiling of a book/report titled: “INEC Beyond 2015, Overview, Challenges and Prospects.’’ The report was written by Mr Amadi, Faith Nwadishi, MacDonald Ekemezie, Abdul Mahmud, James Ugochukwu and Atambi Ade. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/03/inec-suspends-205-staff-over-roles-in.html

A pregnant woman, Lauratu Abdullahi, 30, has asked a Sharia Court at Magajin Gari in Kaduna State to dissolve her marriage because her husband has not been performing his sexual duties to her. Abdullahi also told the court that her husband, Yahya Tanko, was always assaulting her and was also not providing for her. The mother of five told the court on Monday that Tanko had starved her of sex and food since the past four months. “I want the court to dissolve our marriage because my husband does not love and care for me anymore. He beats me when he pleases,’’ she said. However, Tanko denied the allegations, saying that he still loved Abdullahi, pointing out that the woman was carrying a four-month-old pregnancy. “I want to inform the court that my wife is four months pregnant, so her claim of being sexually starved is incorrect,” said Tanko. The Judge, Malam Musa Sa’ad, asked Abdullahi if she was pregnant, and the sex-starved woman said she was, noting however, that the romance that resulted to the pregnancy lasted for only one month. The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that the case has been adjourned until April 3 for the two parties to present their guardians and witnesses. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/03/my-husband-starves-me-of-sex-pregnant.html

The Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha has highlighted reasons Senator Ifeanyi Araraume would fail woefully if given the chance to run in the 2019 election as the flag bearer of the ruling party in the state. Ararume is one of the governorship aspirants of the All Progressive Congress, APC, in the state. The Governor also told Ararume to leave the APC to a fresh party if he has what it takes to win elections. Okorocha, in a lengthy statement made available to reporters in Owerri by his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo on Sunday said that he would not allow Ararume “destroy” the party. Okorocha claimed that Araraume contributed to the woes of his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before deserting it. The statement reads, “He was one of those who called Rochas ‘Alhaji in Government House’ and ‘Okoro Hausa’. The truth is that he won’t be allowed to do to APC what he did to APP, PDP and ACN. “It is unfortunate that a former Senator of Chief Araraume’s caliber should be telling cheep lies over an issue that is well known to all Nigerians who had followed events in APC right from the outset. “Senator Araraume has never been a good Party man. A good Party is the one who, when he looses the Primary, would work to support the party and the candidate of the Party. Senator Araraume has never done that. And we won’t allow him to destroy APC like he had done to some other Political Parties.” “Further explaining how Araraume put a spanner in the progress of PDP, as well as his claim as one of the founders of APC, he said “And he was in Court with Ihedioha until the election was conducted. He only began to relate with APC during the Supplementary election for the governorship. “So, if Senator Araraume Contested the PDP governorship Primary in 2015, could he have in the circumstance also been one of the founders of APC? The answer is obviously in the negative. “What we do not do is to allow opponents of the government to benefit from their lies. We shall continue to submerge their lies. “In case we have forgotten, Senator Araraume was the Pioneer State Chairman of APP. But before the 1999 election, he abandoned the Party following a development that will be a story for another day. The late Evan Enwerem took him to Chief I.D. Nwoga and late Emeka Echeruo who were leaders of the PDP in the State then and secured ticket for him for Okigwe Senatorial zone and that was how he went to the Senate. “In PDP, in 2007, he fought the sitting governor then, Achike Udenwa, to a standstill, took away the Party structure from Udenwa and emerged the governorship candidate of the PDP. Chief Udenwa decided to tell him that he was a sitting governor and then supported Chief Ikedi Ohakim of PPA, and he won. “He also fought Chief Ohakim from the same Okigwe zone with him up to the Supreme Court and lost. And in 2011, he left the PDP and became the governorship Candidate of the ACN. In the governorship election proper he came fourth and could not win any of the 27 LGAs in the State. “By the way, where would Senator Araraume get the votes to win governorship election in the State. Is it Owerri Zone whose people still feel that he is one of the major problems of PDP and Ihedioha or Okigwe Zone where the people of the area still believe that he was the cause of Ohakim’s failed second term bid or Orlu Zone people who see him as the person who never allowed their son, Achike Udenwa to have a peaceful handover. “Beyond the false claims in the media, let one sit down to imagine the fate of APC in the South-East or in Imo without Rochas Okorocha.” Okorocha further challenged Araraume to join a fresh party, like he did in 2011, if he claims he has the structure to win elections, to test his popularity. “If he has what it takes to win an election, let him do what Rochas did in 2011 by picking the ticket of APGA that was not on ground and won and in 2015 when he defiled all odds and joined the merger that gave birth to APC and also won,” Governor Okorocha stated. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/03/2019-araraume-called-me-okoro-hausa-he.html

The Federal Government yesterday called its first witness testimony behind a barricade in the treason charge preferred against four members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB), at the Federal High Court Abuja. The witness, simply identified as Mr. AB, gave his testimony behind a barricade, where only the judge, Justice Binta Nyako, the defendants and the counsel could see him as he was shielded from the public. Leading AB in evidence, Mr. Shuaibu Labaran, counsel to the Department of State Security Services (DSS), the prosecuting agency gave him the assurance that he was fully protected by the court. AB told the court that out of the four defendants in the dock, he could only confidently tell the court about the first defendant, Bright Chimezie. The witness told the court that he met Chimezie in 2016 when he was brought to the DSS office for interrogation. “My boss asked me to interview him and in the process, he told me why and where he was arrested. He also told me that he is a member of IPOB and that he joined while in Port Harcourt. “He also said that he took a delivery imported by the group, a container from Lagos to Ihiala, Anambra to the compound of Benjamin Madubugwu, the second defendant. “It was also revealed that Chimezie, in 2016 was in charge of the welfare of the members of the group and he collected money from some of the group sponsors based outside Nigeria for the members.” Under cross examination by Mr Chukwudi Igwe, counsel to Chimezie, the witness told the court that he was not part of the officers that arrested Chimezie and that he was only asked to interview him. He also told the court that Chimezie, in the statement he volunteered to the DSS, said that when the container he took to Madubugwu’s house was opened on arrival of Nnamdi Kanu, it contained a radio transmitter. When asked by a member of the defence team, Mr Eric Ifere if he knew of any law as at 2016 where it was stated that belonging to IPOB was an offence, he answered in the negative. Justice Nyako adjourned the matter until May 21 for continuation of trial. The Federal Government on March 20, re-arraigned Chimezie, Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi, on an amended three-count charge. Their re-arraignment was sequel to the severance of their trial from that of Nnamdi Kanu, whose whereabout had been unknown since September 2017. They are standing trial for charges bordering on conspiracy to commit treasonable felony, improper importation of goods and illegal possession of firearms. They all pleaded not guilty to the three-counts preferred against them. Justice Nyako had maintained that although the trial itself would not be secret, the identity of witnesses would be protected from the public. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/03/biafra-nigerian-government-commence.html
