Before I go on with this piece of write up, I would want to state clearly that it is in no way, trying to undermine, underestimate, or valuate a certain religion above another; neither is it portraying a certain religion to lacking in any form, over there in Israel or the whole world. As a Christian that I am, of course from birth, we are made to understand that Christianity started from Israel as the pioneer of the faith originates from this region. According to Biblical accounts, The Israelites were rescued by God Almighty, and he chose them to be his people. Right from the time they left their land of captivity (Egypt), God continued to be with them until they arrived the promised land. Stories have also revealed how for a very long generation, God Almighty promised the Israelis to be with them from time to time. He also promised to send them a Messiah, who will come to rescue them and rule over them from everlasting to everlasting. The second testament of the bible tells tales of the coming of this Messiah from his birth, to his ministration, his death and resurrection. According to historical and traditional sources, Jesus lived in Roman Judea, and died and was buried on the site of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Old city of Jerusalem making the are a Holy Land for Christianity. However, few Christians now live in the region, compared to Muslims and Jews. This section of the bible, reveals how God fulfilled his promise to the Israelis and to the whole world in generation. After the death and Resurrection of Christ, before his ascension, he charged his disciples to continue with the ministration he started; to spread out his faith and make disciples of all nations. From that statement, Christianity was given birth to. The disciples then in Jerusalem (Israel), took it upon themselves to spread the gospel (good news) of the Lord across the whole world. Now, this is what prompted my writing this piece. With the relationship that was established between God and the Israelis; how Jesus Christ continued this relationship while on earth; and how this Christianity movement started in Israel by a certain group of Israelis and spread across the world; it is quite mysterious to realize that of the whole Israeli population, Christians constitutes only 2% of it. This brings us to the question, what then is the largest population group in Israel. Religion plays a significant role in Israeli society, and because so many Christians around the world look to the country where Jesus lived and died as a source of inspiration, Israel's tiny Christian community is of special interest. Four of the five mos recent popes have visited Israel. In terms of demographics, adherents to Christianity make up less than two percent of the population in Israel (177,000 people) as of 2020. This is according to the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics (2019-12-23). By far, most of these followers (77%) are Arab-Christians, who are mostly adherents of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church. Some 42% of all Israeli Christians are affiliated with the Melkite Greek Church and so the rest. Although, there seem to be a growth in the number of Christians in Israel because as of 2018, Israel's Central Bureau of Statistics reported that approximately 175,000 Christians were living in Israel, which is significantly less compared to the 177,000 in 2020 (as of 2013, the population of Christians in Israel was at 161,000). Ten Christian churches are formally recognized under Israel's confessional system, for the self- regulation and state recognition of status such as marriage and divorce. However, the practice of religion is free, with no restrictions on the practice of other denominations. There are a good number of Christians who had converted from Islam according to some sources, and most of them are part of the Roman Catholic church. A certain number of Israelis also practice Messianic Judaism- usually considered a syncretist form of Christianity. The number of Messianic Jews in Israel is estimated at around 20,000. They are mostly classified "without religious affiliation" rather than Jewish or Christian. The cities and communities where most of Christians in Israel reside are Haifa, Nazareth, Jish, Mi'ilya, Fassuta and Kafr Yasif. As you all can recall, or must have heard, Israel's Declaration of Independence, issued in 1948, describes the country as a Jewish state but clearly extends religious freedoms to all of it's inhabitants by stating that the State of Israel will ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all it's inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex; it will guaranteed freedom of religion, conscience, ... and safeguard the Holy Places of all religions. Thus the religious affiliation of the Israeli population as of 2020 is 74.2% Jewish, 17.8% Muslim, 2% Christian, and 1.6% Druze, with the remaining 4.4% including faiths such as Samaritanism and Baha'iism, and irreligious people with no faith. Thus, Judaism which was a religion that was practiced by the Jews before the coming of Christianity still remains the largest religious group in Israel. Yes, the CHURCH has been in existence BUT the members of the church were first called CHRISTAINS at Antioch.
Let me relate it to our secular world:
Nigeria gained INDEPENDENCE in 1960 BUT became a REPUBLIC in 1963.
Therefore, Christainity formally started at Antioch just as Nigeria formally started in 1963.
