The Ghanaian Ministry of Trades has rejected claims of unfair treatment by Nigerian traders in the country during the enforcement of the Ghana Investment Promotion Council regulations.
It insisted that the traders must pay the required taxes and other fees imposed on them by the authorities.

This is happening despite the intervention of the presidents of Ghana and Nigeria through the Economic Community of West African States.

A Nigerian trader whose shop was forcefully locked up by the Ghanaian security officials had recorded a video of the incident in which they asked him to pay the $1 million registration fee.

The victim had shown the officials his business registration certificate and other documents but the enforcement team was adamant as they insisted on shutting his premises.

But speaking on the incident on a Ghanaian radio station, Starrfm, the Head of Communications, Ministry of Trade, Prince Boakye Boateng, said the Nigerian traders had failed to honour an ultimatum to meet the requirements.

He said,

“It cannot be we’ve been insensitive; if that is what they’re saying, I’ll be disappointed because I’ll rather say they have rather been unfair to us as a regulatory body because we have given them more time than enough to the extent even the Ghanaians thought that the ministry was not even on their side or the ministry wasn’t ready to even enforce the law.”

He recalled that the shops were locked last December and later re-opened following the intervention of President Nana Akufo-Ado.

According to him, the traders complied but have not regularised their documents for verification.

Boateng explained that the law being enforced gave the Ghana Union of Traders Association the right to be the sole traders in the local market.

The Spokesman, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Ferdinand Nwonye, said the Nigerian mission in Accra was yet to send a formal report on the harassment of the traders to the ministry.

Conspiracy to milk Nigerian traders dry through levies and latter drive them out if they insist to paying.

Beware of Ghana though non of those traders have 1 mill dollars but will advice anyone that have it to come back and invest in Nigeria and enjoy later.

Lol why do Nigerians want to do those type of businesses if you know these are their laws. Nigerians whining and complaining reaks of desperation. Return back to Nigeria if you're not willing to obey their laws. Honestly this stance was pretty easy to see coming considering the election is coming up. GUTA has been complaining bitterly about this since 2018.

Why can't the man tell us the Capital value of his business before before they tax him $1m? undecided

That's only if the $1m claim is true

I get pinched any time I come across the line "since it's their law."

-They abandoned their policy when ECOWAS bilateral ties were formed, and it favoured them the most because Nigeria holds the largest market base in West Africa.

-Why targeting Nigerian traders only? Are there not Ghanians doing businesses freely in Nigeria?

This is a proof that ECOWAS is a scam because they only thrive and get fat with our wealth.. Poor country!!

Lol did the Ghanaian president say we'll disregard the law for Nigeria and ECOWAS. What ECOWAS protocol does Ghana's law break? Nigeria has similar laws on the books.

The said law came barely 3 years ago and the traders have been in Ghana for years.

It's actually 7 years ago. New people shouldn't go into business there. If you're arguing it shouldn't be applied retroactively that's up to the courts to decide. Again no point begging take your tax revenue back to country that wants your business.

Be deceiving yourself,
If any border is closed, it should be those in the Eastern and Western part of Nigeria because here in the North, the borders are so porous that it can never be closed.

NB- My sister travelled to Niger state and she said people are freely moving in and out of the country.
Just hold anything for the boys (immigration officers).
