What Berthing Of The Largest Container Ship At Onne Port Means For Nigerians by Nobody: 4:19pm On Aug 17, 2020
Another giant history was made on Saturday, 15 August, 2020, when the Nigerian Port Authority, NPA, received the largest container ship ever at the Federal Ocean Terminal, Onne, Rivers State.

The Maerskline Stardelhorn ship, which berthed at around 4:20pm on Saturday, is said to be sized around 300 metres long and 48 metres wide--a size of three football fields

This particular event has rubbished the insinuation built up for years that the Eastern ports have shallow Channels for ships to dock. Other excuses for the abandonment of the Easter port can now also be laid to rest.

This isn't just a historic moment to be happy about, this, also, could be the moment Lagosians and people around the Eastern ports might have anticipated for years.

With the decongestion of Lagos ports rolled into motion by the NPA, the benefits of using the Eastern ports swing both ways between Lagos, and the regions surrounding the Eastern ports.

First, the traffic crises at Apapa would at least be somewhat resolved. Apapa has been at the receiving end of the excessive use of the Lagos port over the years. Trucks from around the country have made a mess of the place. This has worsened with bad roads. Traffic jams for hours have disrupted business--and even personal--activities. But with the opening of the Eastern ports, and the decongestion of Lagos port, the traffic situation in Apapa would be reduced by some miles.

This would transcend beyond Apapa; it would be good for the decongestion of Lagos and her traffic as well. In fact, the pressure over the roads into and out of Lagos will reduce.

Second, it will open up the cities around the Eastern port. When ports in Port Harcourt, Onne, Calabar and the Delta ports in Warri and Burutu are fully operational, and are fully utilized, the economic activities of the adjoining towns will improve.

Port cities and adjoining towns around the world are always a beehive of business activities. And the utilization of the Eastern ports would mean more jobs for the people of the South-south and South-eastern regions. More jobs means more wealth distributions amongst Nigerians. It also means less agitation from that part of the country.

The ease of doing business will increase. It won't be necessary for importers in the Southeast or the South-south to head to Lagos before receiving their wares; they can now have them delivered closer than before.

Third, the Nigerian government would benefit even more from this. Lots of shipments are bound to be cleared more. And with more clearing, comes more import duties to be paid.

The use of the Eastern ports is a win-win kind of thing for both the Federal Government of Nigeria and the cities around Nigerian ports.
