The most difficult job in West Africa right now as we speak is that of President of Mali and Burkina Faso.

I know why I said that.

Why did you say that?

Where was ECOWAS before and during the uprising?
What have they done to improve the lot of the citizens?
What punitive measures were taken out on the embattled president and prime minister to checkmate their oppression and looting?
The military seizing power and abducting the president and his prime minister is the best that will happen to Mali.
On point

Wonder when the Nigeria government will be sanctioned for creating an enabling environment for terrorism to thrive?? Or for the countless lives lost every day due to insecurity.

Na who the stupid ECOWAS help? The same ECOWAS that was impotent when Nigeria shut her borders to its fellow ECOWAS neighbors or the Ghanaians that are shutting the businesses of Nigerian. What is the use of the ECOWAS treaties when it cannot guarantee free movement and passage for its members.

Why did you say that?

For a lot of reasons...

Now, where do I start from??

It is a long story/explanation.

For instance, how do you police a country with an area of over 1.2 million square kms(Nigeria is just about 923,000 Sq km) with armed forces with a total strength of 10,000 men? Mali has only about 10,000 soldiers to protect such a large country.

Add that to the fact that the northern part of Mali shares a contiguous border with Southern Algeria- a hot-spot of Islamic jihad and terrorism. Most of the veterans of the Algerian civil war are hiding in that region(including some who also fought in Afghanistan). These terrorist always cross in from Southern Algeria to cause mayhem almost every time. They also bring in very lethal military-grade weapons.

That same northern part of Mali is enmeshed in a Tuareg rebellion. This rebellion has been on since the colonial era. Since the colonial era. As a matter of fact, that rebellion has been the root-cause of several military rebellions and coup d'etats that have ousted several Malian administrations- both military and civilian administrations alike.

The Algerian end of the Mali-Algeria border is poorly policed. In fact, security there is nonexistent. It is often classified as one of the most dangerous borders in the world.

Mali can do very little about its situation due to the fact that it is not so buoyant economically and has very little by way of resources. It can't even support a large army with their meagre resources.

There is the issue of the Sahelian drought which has plagued that part of Africa since the 70s with northern Mali largely affected by it. That drought has also helped in no small way in adding more fuel to the conflict over there as the herders who are mostly Tuaregs and Arabs

Then in parts of Northern and central Mali, you still have ethnic crisis and wars. Everybody fighting everybody. Fulani vs Dogon hunters and farmers. Fulani vs Tuaregs... All sorts. And hundreds have been killed in the process. The Army is overwhelmed but it still deployed in these places to quell these conflicts.

We haven't talked about the economy. We already know that Mali is not an economic powerhouse in West Africa, let alone Africa, yet COVID 19 has come to wreck it even further(just like every other country).

The job is not easy at all, I tell you. But why people still stand-in to be elected for it despite knowing what the odds are still baffles me a lot.

It's really crazy.
