*. Russia tested 50 megaton Tsar Bomba nuclear bomb in the Arctic Circle in 1961, at the height of the Cold War. *. Bomb produced largest man-made explosion in history, 3,333 times more powerful than blast at Hiroshima. The “Tsar Bomba,” “The King of Bombs,” or “Big Ivan” according to the Soviet, produced the most powerful artificial explosion in history and greatly enhanced the anxiety that accompanied the Cold War. While “Little Boy,” the bomb dropped over Hiroshima and the first nuclear device ever detonated, had a yield equivalent to 15 kilotons of TNT and was capable of disintegrating an entire city, the Tsar Bomba had a yield of a whopping 50 megatons and was virtually capable of destroying an entire small country. Russia has released previously-unseen top secret footage of the largest nuclear explosion ever to take place caused when the country detonated its Tsar Bomba device over the Barents Sea in 1961. Soviet photographers struggled to capture the scale of the blast caused by the 50 megaton thermonuclear bomb, which exploded with the force of 50million tons of conventional explosives, or 3,333 times the force of the bomb that levelled Hiroshima. Cameras positioned hundreds of miles from the blast and set up for low-light conditions so as not to be blinded by the flash, captured a fireball rising into the sky for a full 40 seconds before it dissipated into a mushroom cloud. More footage from an aircraft that was 100 miles from the blast then captured the mushroom cloud rising into the atmosphere. At its peak, the mushroom cloud rose 213,000ft into the air, 6 times the cruising altitude of a passenger jet. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8665553/amp/Russia-releases-never-seen-footage-Tsar-Bomba-test.html?__twitter_impression=true 18 Likes 2 Shares

It takes more to destroy the world and less to repair and make the world a better place but unfortunately, humans always take the first option. It will surprise many to know that it costs a fortune to build such a bomb. That is why humans are the only creature that can go extinct and the world will still flourish 214 Likes 9 Shares |

The bomb was the most powerful nuclear device ever created after America's 15 megaton Castle Bravo bomb that was detonated in 1954 and was housed inside a huge bomb case. The site of the test, the bomb was dropped over Severny, an island in the desolate Russian archipelago of Novaya Zemla. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8665553/amp/Russia-releases-never-seen-footage-Tsar-Bomba-test.html?__twitter_impression=true 14 Likes 2 Shares

Weighing around 30 U.S. Tonnes. A specially-engineered Tu-95 bomber carried the Tsar Bomba some 600 miles from an airfield in northern Russia to the site of the test an outcrop of the remote Severny Island. A pilot named Andrei E. Durnovtsev was selected as the squadron leader, he was to fly the customized Tupolev Tu-95 “Bear” airplane armed with the bomb. Another pilot, an unnamed major of the Soviet Air Force, was tasked with flying the second plane, a smaller Tupolev Tu-16, to observe and film the test. Although the bomb was fitted with a parachute that was designed to slow down its descent towards the detonation altitude and give the pilots enough time to get clear of the destruction zone, everyone involved in the operation was aware that the bomb delivery crew had only a 50 percent chance of surviving the mission. Both planes were painted in anti-flash white, a special military paint designed to protect the integrity of the aircraft and the health of the crew by reflecting the thermal radiation produced by a nuclear explosion, and the crew was equipped with black-out visors that were designed to protect their eyes from the blinding brightness of the unprecedented flash. When the planes took off, the men were aware that their fate was in the hands of chance. When Major Durnovtsev reached the agreed coordinates, a Soviet general on the ground remotely released the 27-ton bomb which immediately deployed its parachute and started descending towards the altitude at which it was set to detonate. Durnovtsev, who was aware of the fact that the pilots had only about two and a half minutes to fly to the distance of at least 30 miles away from drop point, channeled all of his concentration and hope into bringing his crew to safety. When the bomb detonated, the smaller and faster plane had already reached the distance of at least 50 miles, but Durnovtsev in his Tu-95 had managed to get only about 28 miles from the center of the explosion. The Tsar’s shock wave, which traveled faster than the speed of sound, reached the plane and caused it to fall rapidly for almost a mile. Three of the crewmen reportedly lost consciousness, but Major Durnovtsev remained in control. He managed to set the plane back on course and safely land at a mainland Air Force base some 300 miles away. https://www.thevintagenews.com/2018/07/09/tsar-bomba/ 59 Likes 11 Shares

The bomb was released two hours after takeoff from a height of 10,500 m (34,500 ft) on a test target within Sukhoy Nos. The bomb was attached to a parachute for the drop to slow its descent so the pilots of the bomber could get outside of the blast radius before detonation. It detonated at 13,000ft above the target. All buildings in the abandoned village of Severny (both wooden and brick), located 55 km (34 mi) from ground zero within the Sukhoy Nos test range, were destroyed. In districts, hundreds of kilometres from ground zero, wooden houses were destroyed, stone ones lost their roofs, windows, and doors, and radio communications were interrupted for almost one hour. One participant in the test saw a bright flash through dark goggles and felt the effects of a thermal pulse even at a distance of 270 km (170 mi). The heat from the explosion could have caused third-degree burns 100 km (62 mi) away from ground zero. A shock wave was observed in the air at Dikson settlement 700 km (430 mi) away, windowpanes were partially broken for distances up to 900 kilometres (560 mi). Atmospheric focusing caused blast damage at even greater distances, breaking windows in Norway and Finland. Despite being detonated 4.2 kilometres (13,000ft) above ground, its seismic body wave magnitude was estimated at 5.0 - 5.25. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8665553/amp/Russia-releases-never-seen-footage-Tsar-Bomba-test.html?__twitter_impression=true 20 Likes 3 Shares

Footage from inside the cockpit of the bomber shows how bright the flash from the device was from over 50miles. The aircraft lost 1,000ft of altitude as the shockwave from the blast hit, but still managed to land safely. 46 Likes 6 Shares

The shockwave from the blast caused an earthquake that measured 5.0 on the Richter scale, with radioactive fallout recorded across Scandinavia. Partly as a result of the blast, Russia and the USA agreed to ban open-air nuclear testing in 1963. 44 Likes 5 Shares

Man created granade bomb and said it wasn't good enough to kill man Man went further to produce atomic /nuclear bomb so as to kill more men. Day by day, Man keep researching more means to create more destructive weapons to kill man. Man kills man and in turn destroy the world. That's the price we pay for being man At the end of the day, nuclear /atomic bombs don't kill man. MAN kill MAN 143 Likes 6 Shares |

Is it not better that these nuclear weapons are tested out of space? Seeing that the radiation incured will last for years here. Out there, radiation is a constant factor, so it's no big deal. 4 Likes |

SirMichael1: Blast of this magnitude fit disintegrate some extraterrestrial bodies maybe mars as it won't be done in just open space na...the force may serve as propellant pushing some large and small particles (large meteorites, asteroids) to earth (no matter how dynamic the outer space pressure may be)..DAT na double disaster as we no go fit predict where all go fall....abi https://www.ctbto.org/specials/testing-times/9-july-1962starfish-prime-outer-space https://www.labroots.com/trending/space/12897/here-s-what-d-happen-detonated-nuclear-bomb-space https://history.nasa.gov/conghand/nuclear.htm But why dem invent am in the first place sef..? 39 Likes |

The Tsar Bomber may be the King of Bombs 59yrs ago, but is a very small boy compared to the nuclear weapons that are available today. The SS-18 Satan equipped with nuclear warheads was capable of hitting multiple targets in one launch. And that was 46 years ago. This is just to give you an insight in the rapid development of nuclear technology. The latest generation of nuclear weapons is not about mass but speed. The ability to strike your target at hypersonic speeds. 45 Likes 3 Shares |

2Lynx:Lol. It's called a planetary body and no, that blast cannot disinterate a planet. E no reach. Yes, maybe the blast will give little kinetic energy to meteorites, debris but it can't propel them here. Mars has an atmosphere just like earth, so the blast won't exceed that astmosphere. Just the way the blast didn't split/ripped earth and didn't affect meteorites or debris, that's what will happen outside. The only problem I see is that there's no oxygen in mars or in space (except a distant planetery body) that would aid combustion. Also, in space, the radius of the blast cannot be measured. 15 Likes |

SirMichael1: Ok. Yeah I know mars and space in general lacks oxygen(to aid combustion) but how will this affect the force of the blast as compared to earth's (minimal or maximum), will this factor also affect the radius of the blast as it did on earth, what is the implication of not being able to measure the radius of the blast? I no fit remember the last time I did intense research anymore 3 Likes 1 Share |

2Lynx:To fire, oxygen is an oxidizer. Take away oxygen from fire and the fire starves to death. If you detonate that in space without oxygen, i'm afraid that it won't explode/combust. Really, the radius of the blast is affected by the oxygen intake of the fire. in fires, the core is the hotest part. This is so because fire absorbs oxygen to itself (its core) and expands out. The more fuel that oxygen combust/burns, the more heat in the core, the more its radius expands. That's why nothing can survive within the core of a nuclear blast. Let's assume we provide oxygen for combustion while in space. First, hope you know there's no gravity in space? In the earth, gravity and nitrogen gases make oxygen stay down on earth and that's why if you go higher skywards, oxygen reduces and it becomes difficult to breathe. When the bomb is detonated, the blast will take an undefined shape but before that... first you'll see a spherical shape with a red (literally) core covered by a blue flame (more like the one from your gas cylinder). The blue flame signifies complete combustion without impurities. Now remember that on earth, oxygen is held down by gravity. In space no gravity, there's an undefined shape to which oxygen will take and whatever it takes, that is what the fire will take. Now because there's no gravity pulling the oxygen to the fire's core, fires in space aren't as hot as it is here and they also burns slowly. 52 Likes 3 Shares |
