jmoore: I don't work for the power companies Infact I have had cause to exchange words with some disco officials at one point over issues with a meter they promised and did not bring( ended up paying estimated billing. ) I also believe they are part of the problem too and also think they don't meter enough But I have also read around the issue , and while no expert , have unearthed a lot of information to see that power problem is not just about government does not give us power. One other thing. When I was a student, I lived in an off campus residence , something like flats. Out of 40 of us living in that block of flats, less than ten of us were paying the NEPA bill for the whole place It was that experience, that woke me up to the nature of the beast. I will conclude that when I blame Nigerians for not paying their bills, I kind of hate myself. If I was in power, I would try to give every Nigerian free electricity But the sad reality is there is no such thing. Good evening to you too. 4 Likes |

The only reason we do not enjoy 24/7 hrs power supply is; 1-incompetence on the part of government 2-lack of will power to proceed with the existing projects 3-corruption will not let it work I know a Nigerian with strong foreign partners who have been pushing to generate electricity in Nigeria for the past 7yrs using their own capital but are being frustrated without approving the project 1 Like |

Emyogalanya:I am trying to understand your comment. It's quite naive and innocent. Stable electricity will play an important role in attracting investors to critical areas of the economy. Not minding what you think, there are millions of SMEs that depends on electricity to deliver their products and services. Agree or Not, stable electric will put Nigeria on the path of growth. And birth new industries. 6 Likes |

But PDP couldn't account for billions of dollars spent on electricity and still signed privatization contracts that will increase tarrif every 5 years. Felicity0001:Mumu is Buhari Nigeria?, wasn’t Nigeria working on so called nuclear energy prior to President Buhari coming into power? Zombie what kind of energy has the Governor of your state proposed for you? Or are you not aware that Jonathan Goodluck deregulated that sector in 2013? kikero: Hello, my good sir... The reports/audits might be considerably a reflection of what the reality is in the sector, however, try not to ever think we are not a rich country... That status is self inflicted with corruption, backward decisions and self sabotage and point blank misplaced priorities that even reflect Nigeria not being one, i.e. unpatriotic... It betrays the nation does not believe in it self. Damn... Till this time, it seems there's still a long way to realize what Bill Gates mentioned about investing in ourselves as a people yet we didn't need him to say it, cos it's always been point blank obvious. The Russians we are now favouring to build nuclear energy sectors for us... you needed to see how they were portrayed in Chernobyl (mini series). Nigeria is richly blessed naturally, we literally inherited good land. Just process the endowments and distribute refined services closer to the demands of the end user. Tis the same reason Ivory coast's cocoa industry as number one producer cannot match Swiss's chocolate industry History backs the country is rich... The mere scale of the corruption going in this country for years since independence and the country is still holding up is another testament. Have you ever heard about what funds is required to sustainably support the population of the civil service Nigeria has along with the immense corruption... smh Nigeria's foreigners know it is, some confess this. The fact that there's a good number of them willing to rape the country of it's riches is there. They simply value Nigeria more than we do. In conclusion, we are simply doing this to ourselves, when we are ready the change will happen. 1 Like |

To have steady electricity like developed countries,we need to pay much .producing electricity is expensive,in the developed countries, you cannot owe electricity bill,u can't owe rent that is why things work .on the other hand ,I think if the government can make 24 hours electricity available ,people will become creative and find a way to pay the bills thru businesses they do with the electricity.some small African countries have constant electricity because they have small population and only need to produce small compared to the large population in Nigeria . Because we sell power at a cost less than what we produce it, complicated by the fact that as much as 40-50% of people don't pay their bills, and even when there is meter, some bypass the meter....that means that the power sector does not have enough money to make the needed improvements In fact the power sector is in a one trillion naira hole financially . All the discos and gencos are running at a loss. Modified Going through the thread I see that people are ready to blame everyone, Buhari and GEJ inclusive for the power problem. The reason why we don't have light is because in Nigeria we think we can get a Ferrari for the price of a bicycle. Yesterday I told someone the actual cost of power in this country as related by ex CBN bigwig Moghalu, and he accused me of lying. We know power costs a lot of money, but accepting that truth, that in order to have stable power we need to pay as much as 60 naira per kWh is too painful So we blame the Hausas, Buhari, the IMF, GEJ, the discos, the gencos, the executive list , etc etc. Meanwhile most of us refuse to pay our bills, chase electricity workers with cutlasses , bypass meters, and cheat on our bills and we expect light 24/7 I think Nigerians tend to live in sugar candy land too much[/quote] 3 Likes 1 Share |

From my research, these are the major problems blocking Nigeria from having 24/7 electricity supply: 1. Repeal the 1999 constitution: The idea of the National grid policy is killing the power sector. States should be given the power to generate, transmit and distribute power to homes and industries without major interference of the central authority. Only they can regulate to some extent to avoid undue exploitation. To me, every state have their own peculiarity when it comes to power need and usages or even the means to get energy 2. Once the national grid policy is removed from the constitution, it will encourage real investors to take advantage of the market given the population of our country to explore. The national grid system driven by subsidy will not allow competition thereby blocking investment in the energy sector 3. Advocacy is well needed to educate Nigerians about the actual cost of energy which they abuse on a daily basis as they are not paying according to the level of consumption for each household 4. For us to have a stable energy supply, Nigerians should be ready to pay the commensurable amount for what they consumed. Without advocacy, Nigerians will not understand the average cost of energy per kilo watt. These are pertinent points that must be addressed. It's more of a policy issue, once the energy sector becomes viable as it is in other climes, investors will take advantage and by doing so, there will be competition and stable energy will be achieved. 4 Likes |
