2. Ooni of Ife

The Ooni of Ife is the most powerful king in Yoruba land. The current Ooni of Ife is Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi . According to the Alake of Egbaland, the Ooni is the first of the five principal Obas in Yorubaland just like the Sultan of Sokoto is the highest ruler in the northern part of Nigeria. This is because his supremacy dates back to the origin of the Yoruba tribe. He is also one of the most influential figures in Nigeria and he recently married Queen Morenike Naomi Oluwaseyi, a prophetess.

3. Alaafin of Oyo
He is the second in line in the ranking of Yoruba monarchs in Nigeria, Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III was born 15 August 1938 and he is the current Alaafin, or traditional ruler, of the Yoruba state of Oyo and righful heir to the throne of its historic empire. His dynasty dates back to the old Oyo empire which recognizes him as the emperor of the Oyo empire. He is among the list of the richest Yoruba king in Nigeria

.4. Alake of Egbaland
Fourth on the list of ranking of obas in Yorubaland is the Alake of Egbaland . He is the paramount Yoruba king of Egba, a city in Abeokuta, Ogun State, southwestern Nigeria. Egba consists of Egba Alake, Owu kingdom rule by the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oke-Ona and Gbagura. He was the one who cleared the air concerning how the monarchs in Yoruba land should be ranked starting from the Ooni of Ife to the Awujale of Ijebuland.

5. Awujale of Ijebuland
He is the least on the list of 5 powerful obas in Yoruba land. His kingdom, Ijebu (also known as Jebu or Geebu) was a Yoruba kingdom in pre-colonial Nigeria. It was formed around the fifteenth century. According to legend, its ruling dynasty was founded by Obanta of Ile-Ife. The current Awujale of Ijebuland is Sikiru Kayode Adetona.

There is a recent tussle as to who is superior between the Oba of Lagos and the Ooni of ife (Yoruba Emperor). This should not be so as history backs the Ooni as the most superior paramount ruler of the Yoruba speaking people.

Yes and so does several Bini accounts.

And my questions remain forever?:

(1) Who was the father of Eweka according to extant Bini accounts?

(2) Who was the first Oba of Benin?

Please don’t be too eager to call your Oba (and his ancestors) fools!

according to extant Bini accounts, the father of Eweka was Prince Ekaladeran (idolized as Oduduwa and worshiped by Yorubas)

first Oba of Benin was Eweka 1.

Alaafin is always invited from the West but due to Oòni being recognised ahead of him by federal government as co-chairman with sultan, he doesn't go to such occasions.

You can go and challenge Oòni's position in a law court if you're so pained. Don't you find your oba far far back in the picture.

Lol.

The immediate past Oba of Benin was the 38th King.

However, his successor the current Oba is the 40th. grin
.
.
.
They’re so drunk with confusion that they can’t agree till date on who their first Oba is.

The extant standard position is that Oranmiyan installed his son as the first Oba of Benin — this agrees with extant Yoruba account.

However, some fringe views among them (which the current Oba holds to) list Oranmiyan himself as the first Oba of Benin.

I guess the aim of this minority view is so that they can rank Omo n’Oba before Alaafin.

Remember Oranmiyan went to Benin before he became the first Alaafin.

So, the propaganda is to say that while he was in Benin he was coronated as Oba — by so doing, they will argue that Omo n’Oba ranks before Alaafin.

However, the reality is that while Oranmiyan was in Benin he wasn’t coronated as Oba and in fact endured some resistance from a party of their elders — this position is the extant Yoruba and Benin account.

So, while he was away as Alaafin at Oyo, his little child Eweka who will later became the first coronated Oba of Benin was still a baby.

I hope this is clear.

since you are so obsessed with ranking of kings, can you rank your Yoruba Oba with Obi of Onitsha, Sultan of Sokoto?

Oranmiyan: The real reason behind Oba of Benin’s recent visit to Ile Ife

Ile Ife is the ancestral home of all Oduduwa descendants, mostly Yoruba and Benin people inclusive, that has been a known fact. The recent visit of Oba of Benin just gave it more credence as the Binis have a common heritage with the Yorubas in Oranmiyan whose groove lies in Ile Ife.

Omo N’oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Oba Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin recently travelled to Ile Ife where he visited the Ooni of Ife on Saturday, April 28. Before this historical visit, the last time an Oba from Benin visited the Ooni was 36 years ago.

According to a popular saying in Benin kingdom: “Oba no dey go transfer,” which simply means that Oba of Benin rarely leaves his palace where he sees to the day-to-day running of his kingdom. That is why Benin monarchs hardly go around.

2018 visit to Ile Ife, went to the Oranmiyan groove and learnt that there is more to the Oba of Benin’s visit to the ancient city. It was gathered that the Oba of Benin actually went to collect a particular sword which all kings of Oranmiyan descent come to Ile Ife to collect. It is called the sword of victory and every king who is a descendant of Oranmiyan must come to the groove to collect the sword.

It was also learnt that while being given the sword, the king visiting will be prayed for that any war he wages he will conquer unless he decide to wage war against Ile Ife then he will lose the war. This is because no son is expected to wage war against his father.

Also gathered that while coming to the groove to collect the sacred sword, any king coming must change from the regalia he is adorned with to a specially prepared outfit before he can step his feet into the Oranmiyan groove for prayers and collection of the sword.

This particular ritual was alleged to be one of the reasons the Oba of Benin went to Ile Ife and also seized the opportunity to visit the Ooni of Ife who was present during his coronation in Benin.

During the historical visit, Ooni, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi Ojaja II, and the Oba of Benin confirmed the common inheritance the two ancient cities have in Oranmiyan, the last son of Oduduwa who was said to have migrated from Ile Ife to become the first Oba of Benin. Oduduwa was also said to be the first Ooni of Ife.

On leaving Benin back to Ile Ife, Oranmiyan was said to have installed his son as the king of Benin thus the title Omo N’oba which when translated means the son of the king.

The Ooni was quoted to have said during the historic visit that: “Those of you that know the history know that the then Oliha came to Ife to ask that Oranmiyan be brought to Benin. There are details in history books. I am cutting out the details. It’s all in the history books and you can research that. He (the then Oliha) was the one that successfully won the right to escort Oranmiyan to Benin to become the first Oba of Benin.”

May all Oranmiyan's descendants continue to live in harmony.
