But I have been rejected by employers - prior to choosing self-employment

That rejection hurt - it made me feel unwanted, I remember feeling confused mostly because I didn't know what I did wrong so I could work on correcting it.

My references were A-1; my skills and experience - top of the line. So it left me confused and frustrated. I answered that by pushing thoughts out of my head and continued to strive and push through it and stay positive.

The kind of rejection that you are talking about is accordingly different from the rejection that the OP is talking about.
