Update 38

“I’ve found a break!” Basket bellowed as soon as he was back in the governor’s office.

The governor raised an eyebrow, but he didn’t seem as excited as Basket was. He was sure that the man had returned to make another ridiculous statement.

“Really?”

“Yes, yes!” replied Basket excitedly. “The slowpoke.”

“What’s wrong with Tony?”

“He mentioned Peter. He mentioned Peter’s name.”

“Is that what’s making you this excited?”

“You don’t understand. ‘Peter go’ – that’s what he said.”

“I don’t seem to understand the significance of that statement. Can you shed more light?”

“First and foremost, you have to acknowledge the fact that the slowpoke mentioned Peter’s name.”

“Of course he did. There’s nothing surprising about that, Mr Balewa. Tony calls Peter by name almost all the time.”

“Really?” Basket was surprised. “Why is that?”

“Because Peter Black is the only prisoner who has always been kind to him in this prison; Peter used to protect him from getting hurt. He and Peter Black were quite close. So it’s only natural that he’s mentioning Peter’s name. You’re just making a mountain out of a molehill, my friend.”

“Are you deliberately choosing to be blind to the truth? Aren’t you seeing the connection? If what you just told me is true, then it confirms my suspicion all along. If the slowpoke and Peter were close as you have said, then there’s the chance that Peter was responsible for his attempted escape.”

The governor sighed again. “Do you have any evidence to back that up?”

“The slowpoke said ‘Peter go!’, surely that must mean something.”

The governor chuckled. “So you want to take the words of an slowpoke as evidence? Pray tell me, in which court are you going to present this evidence? Before which judge will you tender it?”

“If I could have your cooperation, we could burst this wide open. I’m telling you that Peter has a hand in what has been happening. I can bet my life on it – all the indications are evidence of his modus operandi. It’s driving me insane that you’re not seeing what I’m seeing.”

“Okay, tell me – what did you make of Tony’s words. I’m sure you have something already cooked up in your head.”

“It’s really simple if you connect events and try making a little deduction. Peter Black tried to break the slowpoke out –”

“His name is Tony,” said the governor, “At least refer him by his name every once in a while.”

“I don’t care. He’s a bloody slowpoke, and a criminal at that. Besides, I’m going to look into his file very soon. Anyway, as I was saying, Peter tried to break him out but was somehow stopped by those three men. Perhaps Peter wanted to break them out too. A disagreement occurred among the prisoners and it seemed like the three men tried to attack Peter. The slowpoke couldn’t allow the only person who had been kind to him to get hurt. So he defended Peter by killing the attackers. At that point, things got awry and Peter had to escape from the scene, leaving the slowpoke behind to be caught. That’s most probably why the slowpoke was saying ‘Peter go’. If you look at it from my perspective you will agree with me that it makes sense.”

“Still, all these are merely conjectures. You’ll still have to provide concrete evidence to back up what you just told me.”

“That’s why I need to have a conversation with him.”
“With who?”

“Peter Black.”

"You sound like you want to get him to confess.”

“Exactly what I’m going to do.”

“And what makes you think he would do that?”

“I’m going to trick him.”

The governor guffawed. “You want to trick Peter Black? Was something added to your tea before you left home this morning? You’re not half as smart as Peter.”

“And yet the records show that I’m the one who caught him – that I’m the one responsible for his incarceration. If he’s really as smart as you think he is, then why was he caught?”

“I’m curious to know what trick that would be.”

Basket shook his head. “You can’t be there. I have to talk to him alone.”

“Then you must have a voice recorder with you. Take this portable tape recorder. Press RECORD when you’re about to start. I’d like to listen to your conversation.”

Basket shrugged and collected the object. He checked it and found a cassette in the chamber, then he closed it back and left the office. He had been going in and out of the office and it was beginning to look ridiculous. All his effort to connect Peter Black to the crimes had not yielded much, and it was driving him crazy. This interview he would have with Peter Black was going to be his last chance to get what he wanted.

He was waiting in the same room he had question Peter Black the last time. About fifteen minutes after waiting, the door was opened and a guard escorted Peter into the room. Basket did not bother to rise from his seat. He ordered the guard away and motioned Peter to occupy the empty chair. There was a table before them, and on the table was the tape recorder. That was the only object the table bore. Peter didn’t say anything either; he simply sat down as he was told. Basket could see that his former best friend was not in a very good mood. He waited a few seconds before speaking, but first he pressed the RECORD button on the machine.

“I, Chief-of-Police John Balewa, am sitting before the convicted criminal Peter Black here in Ikoyi Prison. Today is August 17, 1996, and the time is 11:53AM.”

“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” Peter asked wearily.

“What the hell are you talking about?”

“Are you sure recording our conversation is a good idea?”

“What are you scared of, Peter Black?”

“Aren’t you concerned that I might say something that could implicate you? Something that might put a dent in your career? Like the fact that we used to be best friends, and how we used to rob people in the streets of Port-Harcourt when we were young? Or some other stuff that would not make you look good to whoever listens to this conversation? Well, it’s your funeral. Record away.”

“First and foremost, all those words you said are blatant lies.”

“Are they?” Peter stared at him.

“Yes, they are. There’s no way you can prove any of that.”

“I’ve got a picture, remember.”

The blood drained from Basket’s face as he stared at Peter in shock.

“What picture are you talking about?” his voice was starting to shake.

“The picture of both of us together. You know what I’m talking about,” replied Black. A brief smiled spread across his lips and he added, “Do not worry about it anyway. I have no intention of exposing you. I’m sure you’ll do the wise thing after this interview.”

Basket breathed in and out for a few moments just to get his wits back. “I’m here to interview you concerning the events that happened since the past two nights.”

“I don’t know anything about anything. All I know is that there has been lockdown since the past two days. Nobody told us anything.”

“You can pretend as much as you want but that’s not going to make any difference. I’m not here to seek your confession. I’m simply here to let you know that you are in a whole lot of trouble now. We already know everything.”

Peter frowned. “Know what?”

“Your involvement in the breakout attempt.”

Peter didn’t act surprised but he asked, “There was an attempt to break out? Who did that? Was the person successful?”

“Save your pretence, young man. Warden Michael already confessed to everything. He confessed to the fact that you are responsible for making the wooden keys. He also confessed to supplying you with warden uniforms. He told us everything so there no point of you trying to deny it.”

Peter stared straight into Basket’s eyes and said, “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I did not commit any crime. I had been in my cell since the past two days. I don’t know where you got your information. Is that why you are here?”

“I’m here to let you know that we know everything and you are in a great deal of trouble.”

Peter chuckled. “Let’s just assume, for a moment, that I was really guilty of the charges you placed against me. What are you going to do to me? Imprison me further? Add more years to the life imprisonment I’m already serving?”

“I’ll make sure you get the death sentence – I already promised you this in the past, and I intend to keep my promise.”

Peter laughed. “You’re such a naïve man. You really think I would get the death sentence for attempting to break out of jail? Really? I thought you knew better, but you’re obviously not making profit in the brain department. It’s simply impossible to get the death sentence for that, constitutionally. For someone already condemned to life, the only punishment I would get is solitary; and even with that, considering the poor prison system of the country, it’s only a matter of time before I’m allowed back to the general population of the prison. So nothing can really be done to me.”

“But you are forgetting something, dear criminal. This is Nigeria. Anything can happen. You can be sentenced to death simply for stealing a pencil in class. Maybe you don’t know how powerful I am; I can influence the decision of the judge. I can do a lot of other things. I can say you are directly responsible for the death of the first prisoner that tried to escape. I can rope you into a lot of things you didn’t do just to see you end up hanged. I can do a lot of things to mess your life up, Peter Black.”

Peter was still smiling when he said, “So you’re willing to go to the lowest of low just to end me? If that is the case, then who is worse between us? You always say that I’m not fit to be among people out there. The truth is that I feel so bad for anyone out there who comes across you. If this is truly who you are then this country is tethering on the edge of doom. You’re no different from Otunba. You are a tumour, John Balewa – and if you don’t change your ways sooner or later, you will be cut off. Nature has a way of purging itself of people like you. If this is the way you reason now, if this is your lifestyle, then you are beyond redemption. You are far down the rabbit hole. Because you want to destroy me you are willing to compromise your own integrity – that’s even if you had any in the first place.

“But you can’t play that game with me, John. The worst you could do to me has already been done. At this point, I dare you to try to do more. You’re basically all words. You have nothing on me. I can see it in your eyes. You are powerless against me, and it’s eating you up. Warden Mike didn’t say all you told me, did he? You only came here hoping to get a confession from me. Is that not so? Looking at you now, I actually feel sorry for you. That feeling of helplessness is really messing you up. Well, once again, you will have to deal with your failure. I’m out of here.”

Peter started to rise.

“You may be right?” Basket suddenly said. “I may not be able to do anything to you, but I’m going to hurt you.”

“I wish you the best of luck,” Peter started walking to the door.

“Aren’t you interested in knowing the fate of your slowpoke friend?”

Peter stopped in his track.

“Keep Tony out of this.”

Basket gave a cruel smile. “He killed three people. I’ll make sure he hangs.”
