When author George Santayana remarked “Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it,” it is easy to think his pen was inspired by present Nigerian leaders. The ruling class, having enjoyed many superfluous privileges since democracy’s dawn, grew in confidence in underestimating masses power. Their body language mirrored in comments of “Stop the protests since SARS has been disbanded” points to their consternation and fear. To think this day won’t come is naïve, illusory and further exposes them or anyone else in this school of thought as bad students of history. A revolution is coming, the vehement call for end of the police’s special anti-robbery squad is setting the ball to roll.

Asked about my view on Nigeria’s quandary in an Alumni WhatsApp group on April 8, 2020—six months ago—I commented that “In Nigeria’s case, status-quo yearns for a revolution, a deviation from convention. France is a good example.” My age-long position stemmed from observation of Nigeria today and familiarization with similar events in some nations yesterday. It is unsurprising Nigerians have woken up from their slumber, this was bound to happen; as opposed to hitherto rampant views that Nigeria was hopeless and irremediably so.

Essentially, revolution is a language spoken by the people when power of the people is undervalued by people in power. It is a reaction often to years of governmental inertia, deafness, insensitivity, and selfishness. Nigerians are almost at that point where “Patience is virtue” sounds like a broken record. The political elites, oligarchs, who revel in greed unrestrictedly stagnating our education, health, security, economy, infrastructure, have had a field day to masses detriment for too long. The #EndSARS nationwide protest aimed at protecting innocent lives and revamping the police seems destined to take us to a full-blown revolt. Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s performance in Enugu State was challenged before him in public unapologetically. FCT Minister’s convoy was impeded from accessing Abuja’s airport for his flight. “Go and end SARS,” the protesters implored him, among other instances. The valiance needed has left doubt behind.

More so, a dreaded feature of revolution is bloodiness. The presidency, governors, legislators, supposed political godfathers, now have reason to be terrified. I hope it doesn’t degenerate to their untimely demise. Protesters have been killed, an incentive already to return the favour. The Army would hardly be able to neutralize 1000 or more people who storm different government lodges concurrently. Recall Boko-Haram also demands attention.

Well, to avert this macabre scenario, pragmatically or tangibly, not verbally, addressing grievances of Nigerians across every sector forthwith would work. Events of the past one week is unprecedented here and no child’s play. Whether this spreading wild fire would consume those in government en route a renaissance in this country or not, fact is the extinguisher is in their hands.

Nothing is amiss in calling on the government to sit up immediately to avoid the lethal wrath of the people, the post deserves a place on the front page.
