Olodo full nairaland ooo. See empty heads everywhere....chai! How can someone be arguing about something he/she knows nothing about. Left for this fish brains on Nairaland, FG for don dismantle ASUU same way it did Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and turn public universities to shit just like they did with primary and secondary. Olodo them, how many of your children dey attend public primary and secondary schools now. You keep supporting failure....and you are wandering why you are failing in life. Shame! 3 Likes |

Rahym001: Aswearugaaad Bro no just open mouth dey misyarn. The idea of having visiting lecturers is not a bad one at all. The job of a visiting lecturer is usually a temporary one, held by someone who has a permanent lectureship at another university. There are visiting lecturers abroad too. No be wetin cause unemployment. Tell your government to fix up our education sector. Everybody dey strike... If that doesn't tell you something, then you've refused to listen. 1 Like |

Decimus: Improving university is not a job for ASUU alone. Many people don't know ASUU or their functions. ASUU - Academic Staff Union of Universities. They are one of several section of the university staffs. They are responsible for teaching the student. There are also the Non-academic staffs like the NASU, SSANU e.t.c. Apart from salaries, the money ASUU always fight for in the name of university development goes into the university wallet not ASUU. ASUU make sure the FG release the money to the universities. The university headed by the VC who answers to the government (state government in most cases). So how the funds are used depends mostly on them not ASUU. SO "universities improving or deteriorating" is not just the fault of ASUU. The problem is that Nigerians (both leaders & followers) have the habit of making a simple problem look complex. For example, this strike isuue b/w FG and ASUU; very simple problem with simple solution, but look how complex both parties have made it. |

Gabbriell:So why are they always inferring that they are on strike for the betterment of the universities. All their incessant strikes, cutting across decades are only capable of wasting student's time and putting some change in the pocket of the union. So i don't quite agree with your claim that ASUU should be supported so that the public universities won't go the way of the primaries and secondaries. Their strikes doesn't matter and it won't make the universities better. If FG decide to overlook the IPPIS today, they will go back to the classroom. It will still be the same overcrowded lecture halls, 12 students per room and 40 years old bathrooms in schools like OAU, UI and UNN. |

Herbephe1:Thanks for the coded insults. I totally agree with you that there are bad eggs in the system, that have totally smeared and brought unimaginable disrepute to the academia. Sex for undeserved promotion is not peculiar to the tertiary institutions, we see it everyday in this twisted world we live in today. Before I went into the academia I was a high flyer as a young man in one of the major Multinational oil companies as a contract staff. I once lost a promotion to a girl that was employed less than a week in a company that I have worked in for over a year. That lady actually f.ucked her way into being a full staff of the company. Don't get me started on the banking sector my parents are retired bankers. Sex has always been a weapon of choice for weak people to get ahead of hardworking deserving people. I'm not defending people that indulge in it, but let's call a spade a spade and not a shovel. I'm a principled individual and I know so many honorable gentlemen in the academia that won't even think of indulging in such. So please stop generalizing. On my talk on mentorship. I worked in oil and gas industry for 6years, I won several awards in different offshore locations before I honorably left the industry and went into the academia to share knowledge. Despite my years of experience, a professor in my department had to take me under his wings and I learnt a lot from him. I'm currently one of the top ten scientist in my field in Africa. My students have one several awards in the USA, where we won the second best in the world and also won best price in a competitions in South Africa and in Ghana. I'm currently working a ground breaking research that will revolutionalize the way we do things in the world today, because of lack of funding by the Nigerian government I'm currently working with a secondary school classmate of mine who is a professor in a university in UK and who got a 5million Euro grant for our research. I have two students here in Nigeria working with me on this research and three international students, two of whom came to Nigeria last year because of our work. While the Nigerian government will give you peanuts as a research grant, other countries that know the importance of education are stealing our real Eggheads. Make una no worry una eye go soon clear. NB: If you think I'm lying, I challenge you to send me a pm and I'll happily give you full details of who I am and my research work, hell I'll even invite you to my lab. |

nairavsdollars:now I am convinced that ASUU is being very mischievous. What a stupid blatant lie from a professor, someone who is to be held in high esteem, with a high degree of integrity expected of him!!! He can go so low to the point to telling childish stupid lies just to buy public sympathy. I am so annoyed with the petty hand ASUP is dealing right now. Clearly, they have an ulterior motive in rejecting IPPIS. |

Decimus: I don't like lengthy conversation but let me summarise so that you don't misunderstand my point. Here are the answer to each of the paragraphs question a above. =》"WHY are they always inferring that they are on strike for the betterment of the universities." Simply put, they are. Whichever way you look at it: From development point of view, have you ever heard of TETFUND and how ASUU fought tooth and nail to ensure its success when things weren't going the way it should. If you stay near a university, just survey the building and see where their funds came from. From salary point of view: There is a saying that "a hungry man is an angry man". What do you expect from your lecturers if after working they only get 50% of their salaries (main reason for this thread). =》I don't quite agree with your claim that ASUU should be supported so that the public universities won't go the way of the primaries and secondaries. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”–George Santayana. Last time everyone supported the government against NUT (you can read about it). Government did made lots of promises but never kept them. Take a good look at the state of our public primary & secondary schools now. Government had ealier in 2009 and 2013 aggreed to release some funds for the universities. Lengthy strike actions were taken to achieve those agreements. From then till now the have not honored the agreement and you think people should not support ASUU. what then are you telling the federal government. They should have at least call for a renegotiation of agreement with ASUU if they can't honor their words. =》"Their strikes doesn't matter and it won't make the universities better. " Their strike matters. But to some extent you are tight-" it won't make the universities better". I personally think they could have been having this current discussions/negotiations with FG while school is still on. Strike is not the only way to dialogue with FG, ASUU should do their home work well. Thanks for the healthy conversation. I rest my case |

Decimus: Daddy, take it to the bank: the universities are absol-100%-utely improving. And it is largely due to a program (TETFUND) that is ASUU's brainchild. Unfortunately, TETFUND has not completed its 20-year impact assessment study. But If you actually wanted to learn about a subject you've been posting on all day, the information is actually out there. Take this study for example : http://www.ccsenet.org/journal/index.php/jsd/article/view/39128 It focuses on EBSU, but the authors extrapolate to the entire Nigerian tertiary education system (as they well should), and you can see the clear trends. If you must post so aggressively on an issue, at least try to familiarize yourself with the facts! |

Even Nebuchadnezzar in ancient times knew how to take care of scholars while in the 21st century we have a government that neither cares for education nor the welfare of scholars. |
Re: IPPIS: FG Paid Some Professors N8,000 As Monthly Salary – Abiodun Ogunyemi by Decimus: 4:46pm On Oct 30, 2020 |
proffemi:By facts you mean what's in the papers or what's published online? They are improving yet, students are sitting on the floors and windows to receive lectures, the hostels are overcrowded with overstretched facilitues. The Laboratory are ill-equipped with archaic apparatus. Students have to shine their smartphones light into the simple microscope to view specimens. Some practicals get delayed or postponed cos of lack of Power supply. Most of the reagents in the laboratories have expired thus unreactive. I can go on and on. Things were not as worse as this before, and it keeps getting worse and no amount of ASUU strike can fix that. |
Re: IPPIS: FG Paid Some Professors N8,000 As Monthly Salary – Abiodun Ogunyemi by proffemi: 4:59pm On Oct 30, 2020 |
Decimus: Yes, it is just up the alley of an individual like you to argue from limited, myopic personal experience while rejecting *peer-reviewed, verifiable* facts. That something is improving globally does not mean that all local instances improve. I do not know your alma mater, but if you were to mention it, I'm sure interested posters will point out the recent TETFUND interventions there (assuming you *did* attend a university of course). I have neither interest in, nor time to cross swords with you. All I have time to do is provide evidence of your misconception, if you are interested. Re-calibrate based on superior information or stick with your preconceptions, it's up to you and no longer any business of mine. Sayonara. |

proffemi:Whatever you say, only private universities are better off, then a few state universities. 99% of Federal universites are in a worse state in all ramifications. You don't need to bother about my Alma mater, i already stated earlier that i had first hand experience in two Federal universites and i have families and friends, siblings who attended/attending others. And of course we read News and see pictures everyday. You are even a clown to want to dispute that not most public universities in Nigeria are suffering from old, dilapidated hostels and inadequate lecture halls and ill-equipped labs. |

Decimus:All ramifications? I hope you're not a Science or Engineering graduate making such a sweeping and patently false statement. Research funding? Infrastructure? Student facilities? I can tell you with 100% confidence that every single federal university has improved significantly in at least one of those areas over the last 20 years. You are even a clown to want to dispute that not most public universities in Nigeria are suffering from old, dilapidated hostels and inadequate lecture halls and ill-equipped labs.Don't be slow. Saying they are improving is hardly the same as saying they are world class or even of acceptable standard. That they still remain in relatively bad states despite the increased funding and interventions should tell you how bad things were, and how much is really needed to take them to world-class standards. You don't need to bother about my Alma mater...People get so selective about hiding information when they are lying freely. Mention at least one of those your two universities unless you're afraid or ashamed. I am in Obafemi Awolowo University for example. I'm neither proud of, nor ashamed of that fact. Challenge me, and I will tell you some of what TETFUND has done in my university. Mention your own university, and I will do same for it. |
