The Kano State Commissioner for Education, Muhammad Kiru, on Thursday, threatened to cancel the third term in the state if proprietors of private schools fail to reduce their school fees by at least 25 per cent before November 1, 2020

The Chief Public Relations Officer of the Ministry, Aliyu Yusuf, in a statement, said the state would be left with no other option than to cancel the third term of the 2019/2020 academic session if the proprietors fail to adhere to the directive of the state government

, in the statement, explained that the decision of the Ministry became necessary in view of the ongoing difficult economic situation, following the lockdown due to the menace of COVID -19 which affected both the socio-economic position of the general public.

Recall that the Kano State Government had directed the reopening of private and public schools from October 11, 2020, after over six months of closure due to the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic.

According to the resumption schedule, the first three weeks would be used for the conduct of the second term examination, while the third term 2019/2020 academic session commences thereafter.

Trash, will the state govt help in paying the teachers or recoup the Covid loss?
Parents can always take their wards to another school if they feel the fee is too much.
Besides, the govt should also standardize govt schools to compete with the private, that's the ultimate solution.

Education in Nigeria is a big scam, more like push them forward to learn little or nothing and graduate so they could become more frustrated in life.

But this same government won't pay ASUU and let tertiary institutions resume.

They don't want private schools to enjoy their own money, they just want to eat alone.grin

PS: private schools pay their workers too

Eduscam. The govt should shut up, they caused all these crisis, if they have done the right thing by providing and adequately providing for public schools, who cares about those private schools especially in Kano. Now, you left the masses with no option than to be at the mercy of those private sch. Adequate public schools is the only antidote to check private sch excesses

A case of "I am having headache, cut off the head "

If the State Government is sincere an wants to help then the should give the private schools some sort of tax waiver and enforce a 25% fees reduction.

If you cancel third term the students lose more.

Government under this Buhari regime just behave exactly how they feel like .
Who dictates to a private business man how to fix the price of his goods ? You only do that through competition

Something is wrong with our administrative system
You want to regulate private school fees but when private schools are in problems and unable to pay salary during lockdown you abandoned them and looked away

In my primary school days I paid fully for third term and didn't spend a day in third term as common entrance came before third term same in secondary school

It's already part of the school policies

If them close 3rd term will it not affect both private and public, are they d one paying private school staff salaries, instead of them to cushion the effect by reimbursing them, they make things more difficult

Very dull thinking!
You cannot regulate how a private business chose to charge for services rendered. There is high inflation in the country and private school owners have to also do the needful in the face of this harsh economic situation based on the economic wisdom of this administration.

The commissioner should focus on providing quality education in public schools.

The North has always been against quality education and those in power will look for one way or the other to mitigate or kill quality education.
Instead of threatening private schools, make the public one's better.

This new ultimatum might do just that by sending some private schools that are also businesses into extinction.

Good things such as quality education ain't cheap.
The private school owners are not forcing anyone to bring their children. If you cannot afford it, then it's better you go to government schools.

This kind of mentality will always keep the North underdeveloped.

After all, "if you think quality education is expensive, try quality ignorance".

The powers that be in the North has always thrived on high population with high illiteracy rate, so they can rule them like herds of sheep with religion as a whip to put them in check.

The North is sitting on a social nuclear bomb... tongue

Case of common sense, 3rd term will only last a month so I think it is ok if schools reduce their fees.

There's a new wave of corona in the West already, with even more staggering numbers than the first wave and countries have started going into lockdown again.

I just hope it doesn't get in here to avoid wasting months and people's life to another lockdown.

Mumu governor.

With the high cost of every thing in the country what does he expect private schools to do.

Abi are private schools operating charity organization?

That is why govt school is an option if one can't afford private school.
