Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State, on Monday, appealed to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to sustain the policy on the ban of rice importation and not succumb to any pressure.

The governor made the appeal in Makurdi when the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, paid him a courtesy visit.

During the visit, Ortom said the state as the food basket of the nation, commended the president and the Federal Government for the policy which helped in boosting rice production and agriculture in general in the state.

“The ban on rice importation remains a major milestone in the development of agriculture in Benue. We want to appeal to the Federal Government to continue with the policy.

“There might be hardship for a little while but farmers are smiling to their banks now compared to what used to happen. I have been into farming since 1984 and I am a living witness to this development.

“Before now, when we cultivate rice, we were not able to sell even the cost of production but today things have changed. Just harvest, the market is already there,” he said.

The governor said many youths had ventured into rice farming thereby solving the challenge of unemployment.

He assured that with sustained policy and a value chain in the sector, Benue had the capacity to produce the staple food for the country.

Ortom also urged the Federal Government to compel the Central Bank of Nigeria to provide incentives for farmers and private investors in the value chain.

The governor also thanked the president for the support to the state in addressing the challenge of insecurity.

He said the issue of farmers-herders clashes had been reduced to the barest minimum with the help of the laws passed by the state banning open grazing.

Ortom said with the support of the security agencies, no fewer than 400 herdsmen had been arrested for infraction out of which 140 had been convicted.

He appealed to the Federal Government to help the state in the relocation of internally displaced persons as a result of the conflict to their homes.

Banning importation of rice into the country is one of the best decisions made by this government even though they have failed us woefully.

However, a seemingly rational and needed decision such as the ban has made life miserable to a large extent. You don’t ban importation without massively following it up with implementation of policies that helps local production.

Rice is still expensive because of the cost of production and some opportunists likewise other produce.

If only Government is sincere with these policies, then we should have started reaping the benefits of border closure by now.

1) Provide free or very low cost inputs eg seeds, improved varieties, free lease of machines.

2) Subsidize processing and production machineries. I approached the bank sometimes ago for forex on Agro processing machineries to aid local production but was grossly disappointed

3) Make grassroots friendly agricultural policies. Not ones that are feasible online but unattainable to those not connected.

4) For those who managed to fund themselves to start up something, what will be their fate after borrowing to start the project for produce hitherto imported.

5) Border closure isn’t enough, logistics and transportation plays a huge role in cost of production.

6) Farmers to end users connection should be promoted so that farmers can earn premium income for their sweats.

I can keep naming it but border closure without adequate plans has subjected us to unprecedented and untold hardship.

God help us.

Nigerian should start producing most important human use products and food themselves....

Especially foods...

You don't hav to make cloths, bags & assemble cars in the country.. . and import yam, garri, rice and even drinking water, dentiscalp.

Open the borders. Does it bother you that food is unaffordable for many?

Flood destroyed farmlands in the North West while pests and drought was the challenge of North Eastern farmers. Moreover, our neighbors are banning export while a country of 200 million people is banning import.

undecided

The man has used the Benue
State money to cultivate hundreds
of privately owned hectares of rice which he is expecting to sell at 25k per bag.

All his farm workers are under the
payroll of Benue State government.

This is the same governor who has
enslaved his people as he could not pay
the 18k minimum wage, talk less of 30k.

He & Kogi state governor have been
competing over the position of the
worst governor in Nigeria.

Remember, a few years back, he empowered
his youth with brand new wheelbarrows!!
