Owed salaries?
You mean these great lecturers were busy working and delivering great lectures yet this evil government has decided not to pay them for their work?
This is pure evil.
You seem to believe that without this ASUU strike, the Government would have listened to them about UTAS/IPPIS and the other failed promisesagreements by the FG. ASUU is simply saying that its the fault of the FG that the strike took place at all and as such, they should pay them for the wasted time.

What do you think about this ASUU's statements?

ASUU need money to celebrate Christmas and new year. After getting paid, strike would still continue. No government can meet ASUU demands!!!

Every organisation has a union put in place to fight for the cause of ITS member Before any other thing. Why do you think NLC Colapse because it can no longer fulfil that mandate. If the student really wish to make a change they should fight for themselves also and not wail on twitter. The problem here is not the ASUU its the FG. Why not face them and not those lecturer that have not been paid there allowance since 2009. Go to all these public university and see for yourself the glorified secondary school being called university.

Mumu, how many of your elected leaders work what they get?. Those teacher's of leaders have toiled more than they earn, and still stay back when some have better offer elsewhere, believing in a deadbeat country like ours with sickly leaders who are the helms of affair. Your average senator earns over 13million monthly and loot much more in the name of community project, while erudite professor who have much to offer earn averagely 500k per month, with some earning less. Think oboy, before you comment.

Are you thinking about the students in all of f this?

ASUU should stop pressing home their demands with a method that will only waste student's time.

Which other method would you have suggested?. Lecturer are human being too and they see on daily basis how elected leaders steals with reckless abandonment by people with low IQ, while highly cerebral people retires to abject poverty. They simply want to secure their tomorrow, while still active and the best way is industrial action regardless of whose horse is gourd. So if you look it at the peripheral then their action is far too much, but if you know the leaders we have in this country then you will understand and stand with their cause.

That's for them to find out. After all they claim to be great researchers.
Some if not most of them were instrumental in getting people like Buhari and Adamu to their present positions. I don't understand why suddenly they expect them to show great love and commitment to western education.

This strike won't end the usual way, i don't think the Government is ready pay ASUU for going on strike, at most they will offer them one or two months Salaries.

Sorry to say, but this Union has been the cause of many wasted years for undergrads and postgraduate students..

Demonic cool

This same union is the sole reason you still have public universities.

Am sure you are unaware of the fact that ASUU rejected and stopped the plan of the government to increase tuition fees from N45k to N250 and N300k for Arts and Sciences respectively so as to increase staff salaries. Sometimes try to reason before making a judgement.

Sure in fact they are paramount in my thinking. A happy lecturer equal to a happy student, which then transcend into a brilliant student that helps the nation. The lecturers have been undermined for a while in this country, and action like this is called for to better our education in Nigeria. Remember some of the students will someday be lecturers too, and this is also for them.

Forget about Earned academic allowance.
Forget revitalization fund.
Forget UTAS.
Forget 2009 agreement.
This is the basic salaries being owed lecturers for months now that we're talking about. Even this the govt is finding too difficult to pay!
Is there any atom of seriousness or commitment from those charlatans towards resolving this issue?
I personally know that the pledged N70bn is way too astronomical to expect this particular govt to dump into education alone, especially considering their antecedents.
But what about owed salaries,is that also too much?

Did they work for the said salaries

They promised to pay on or before 9th December. Let's give them chance to 'fail'.

Then that method without considering the adverse effects on students is the grand selfishness people have always been accusing ASUU of.

Let's assume the Government should tell them
No work, no pay
No more meetings or negotiations
That ASUU should go back to the classroom first before they will get any salary.
What do you think will happen?

Yes I am in full and total support of ASUU

FG must pay up. I see no reason why the FG should go into a stalemate when in the end it will come down to paying for those months ASUU went on strike. ASUU has repeatedly reiterated that it is willing to work and that govt must honour agreement signed. Technically if the govt was sincere she should have continued engaging ASUU while engaging ASUU not to withdraw from lecture rooms. Govt insincerity is the main reason why ASUU is never shifting grounds on her demands.

If the FG can make available billions of naira to their cronies in the national Assembly and the executives I see no reason why withholding salaries of lectures during the period of the strike

In the real sense of it, is it justified to request for salaries you didn’t work for?

ASUU is part of the problem not the solution. As long as ASUU exists we’ll continue to have strikes in schools (they believe they’ll get paid regardless of how long they sit at home).

Asking to be paid salaries is akin to students asking to be promoted to the next class upon resumption.

Will FG reimburse students for their unused house rents?
One of the most sensible comment on this thread. they want to reap where they never sowed, I support the no work no pay clause the Fed govt activated in the labour laws.

So ASUU should make up their minds

ASUU is one of the strongest pressure group in Nigeria if not the strongest. This action has been on for more than 8nonths now, and they are not backing down, and so you think a lame instruction has going back to class by this FG would hold waters. My brother, is as much as I want this stand off to end, ASUU is having the ace and the FG knows it. If today FG proscribe ASUU, then the university system in Nigeria won't survive it. Most of this lecturer can easily get better or equal offer in some African countries at the very least. FG knows better, and they would blink first, I can assure you of that.

Call it whatever you want but it works perfectly for ASUU.

In life, when it comes to negotiations, there's something called BARGAINING CHIPS.

If you are going into any negotiations without having your bargaining chips, you have lost already.

FG uses their threat of Salary Withholding method as their bargaining chip.

ASUU uses embarking on strike as their own bargaining chip.

It always comes down to who will blink first.

You might argue that students have to stay at home as a consequence of ASUU strike but have you considered the hardship lecturers will have to go through as a result of their salaries being withheld by the FG?

No pain; No Gain!!!

Soon and very soon, even lecturing jobs and lecturers will become redundant as more and more students embrace learning online from Youtube, Udacity, Lynda, Coursera, Codegym, Udemy, Duolingo and so on...
Guy,YouTube have been saving life. One lecturer will be explaining a engineering topic in class, sleep and headache go dey worry person but once you open youtube. You will see that it is not hard.Thank God for technology.

That myth will win soon be demystified.

There are not many universites outside Nigeria that can tolerate Nigerian lecturers excesses.
Even if they get the job first time, most of them will come back after getting involved in corruption, plagiarism, sex and money for marks and incessant absence from lectures.
