I don't understand why our governors are eternally lazy.

They travel abroad and see how cities are developed yet they cannot replicate the same thing in their states.

Take Onitsha Water front for example. Why can't the government reclaim the shoreline build, six lane roads and gradually begin developing the area, by erecting high rise office complexes and residential apartments.

This will turn the city into a modern business area in the SE region.

The city need space...Building of 6 story houses is eating up the land space.

Our politicians are only creative when they are seeking for position, after winning, they are always brain dead to fulfill their campaign promises

This can be done in phases. Dubai started in phases.

All a governor need to do is to map the area, pay compensation to land and property owners and clear the site.

Sign laws and tag the area business district or City Center...

The problem with Nigeria is that their best brains are outside the country.

We have the natural environment, but we don't have people that are creative.

This is Boston Waterfront.

Try to be realistic, man. Do you know how much it costs to erect a single skyscraper? Especially nowadays that dangote sells cement at almost 5k a bag? How much is Anambras total budget for the year? To put up such iconic stuffs, the federal government has to be seriously involved, not mainly in providing the funds but in creating an incetified environment that will encourage developers to do so. Building a high rise is a business for real estate operators. There are many foreign operators in this area who may even get involved if it's profitable. If a business used say 10 billion to build a skyscraper and gets say12 billion after selling off the apartments in a very short period, then the market will boom. You will even see folks experienced in the field from far away countries like Hong Kong or China struggling to participate. But then high-rises will need constant power supply to function, good maintenance staffs, good quality checks, etc . Few state can provide such resources, unless the governor intentionally focuses most of his budgeted expenses on those..

You are correct.

But we are talking of decades of investment.

The areas have to be mapped out first and you will see investors coming.

Lagos has high rise...where did they get the power from?

See Dubai in the 50s - pic 1

If one man can build this in Umuchuku in Anambra state why can't the government start with one high rise. Pic 2

I seriously believe in urbanization! Seriously, it's the fastest way that a country can move her people from one lower stage of existence to a higher level of living. If you move somebody from the village into an urban high rise with 24 hour power supply, internet connection, internal plumbing ofcourse, telephone lines and TV access with good surrounding neighbourhood, you just brought him to the new century! Urbanization is what the Chinese are using to modernise their cities, their environment and ofcourse their lifestyles. But it works faster and better when you take time to put down the basic infastructure and laws. In Onitsha, inspite of the draw backs, folks are still building 5 storey houses all over the place. I even heard that Obiano has to reduce it to 4 storey buildings because a house collapsed last time! Essentially, the government there is even working against erecting high rises! I'm not saying it's impossible. Just that it won't be easy at all like the Dubai example you gave for several reasons..

Firstly, you have to change the land laws to empower the government to appropriate lands for redevelopment. That won't be easy because of the corrupt political system here where politicians might use the law to take over lands and hand them over to cronnies for development and sell. Folks will be up in arms. If you try such in Onitsha, you will have a thousand law cases the next day against the government.
Secondly, we import a great deal of the building materials we use in this country. For example, the electrical and plumbing and tiles and keys and superior doors , roofing sheets etc. That is not sustainable. If you import that much, it means that every time you're building a skyscraper, you are sending billions to China. But if most of these are produced here,(and the technology is not that complex), the money spent to buy them will only move from one account to another in a Nigerian bank. Making the money still available within the economy so that other builders can access that for new projects.

NIGERIAN Governors are extremely lazy and thiefry. Compare Nigerian Governors with those in AMERICA an see how irresponsible Nigerian Governors are. All the Arguments of Restructuring of Police, Resources and Elections should, be, in the first instance, made by The 36 CONSTITUTIONAL STATE GOVERNMENTS. Instead, our Governors like to stay in the Shadows of Mr PRESIDENT and his Security to get Ideas to loot their Allocations and peddle fake gossips. Can you compare any GOVERNOR in NIGERIA with CUOMO OF NEW YORK? Only WIKE is good and demonstrate sound Education and Skills in his MANAGEMENT. NIGERIA GOVERNORS ARE MUMUS AND DUNDEE UNITED. THAT BUHARI CAN BE PRESIDING OVER BRAINS LIKE AKEREDOLU, WIKE, ZULUM, MAKINDE, ORTOM ETCETERA ETCETERA AND SHOVEL THEM LIKE WEEDS AND RAMS MEANT FOR SLAUGHTER IS JUST SICKENING. AT ANY SLIGHT PROVOCATION, BURAITAI WILL TAKE LAW INTO HIS HAND AND START KILLING CIVILIANS ANYHOW.

If you're fine with paying more taxes or increased borrowing to fund these things ok. Just look at the Eko Atlantic it cost billions as a PPP. Most of what you see in boston was built by the private sector. Why dont you build the skyscrapers and apartments making yourself a nice profit in the process. The government cant and wont do everything.

I love the arguments on this thread. Please keep it coming without the insults.

Here's my take:

Firstly, we need a strong blueprint and developmental plan for the various states. This should be pursued irrespective of the political party in power. Achievements should only be measured based on how far a governor is able to do in achieving the goals.

Secondly, town planning and area mapping should be taken seriously in every state. This will ensure that only the projects mapped out for each district are executed.

Thirdly, we need a heavy steel manufacturing firms in Nigeria. We need to be more internally driven towards pursuing individual state objectives. TheresT definitely a lot needed to build 21st century structures but most of all is sincerity and consistency.

This is why this Biafra agitation thing is so unnecessary.

You can create that 'Biafra' even without secession.

All it takes is for the Eastern leaders to upgrade their thinking.

What this OP said is a case in point. If implemented, no Fulani man can stop it. No Hausa man or Yoruba man can sabotage it.

Instead they will be rushing to kiss your ass and do business in the East, bringing more money into the region.
