Chaotic Ports Require Fresh Ideas - Punch Editorial by iwaeda: 3:09pm On Sep 09, 2021 |
IN an ever more complex global maritime milieu, Nigeria’s seaports remain an economic hole largely because of their uncompetitive, backward, corruption-ridden operations. A fresh push by the House of Representatives Committee on Customs and Excise to untangle the turmoil buttresses the entrenched chaos that has defied all the half-hearted solutions being applied. The dysfunctional ports severely inhibit the economy. Therefore, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), should step in decisively.https://punchng.com/chaotic-ports-require-fresh-ideas/?

The major factor causing gridlock and driving up costs prohibitively is the erection of multiple illegal checkpoints mounted by the police and the military. The people that are supposed to impound are the ones extorting. Imagine, they are still screening goods manually. This is tedious, prone to delays and corruption. Something must be done ASAP to all these chaos. 4 Likes 3 Shares |

The ports are too chaotic indeed. That is how I lost one full 40ft container of vultures shipped from Kinshasa in Congo at the Onne Port in Rivers state. I wanted to deliver it to a client who is into some grilling business. Now the guy is on my neck. He has even reported me to EFCC, Police and Nairaland Mods. 9 Likes |

How about decongest Lagos port and open up ports in the south-south and south-east region? How complex is that? 4 Likes |

After reading this!! In summary! Development is far from Nigeria even in this century!! Again! Imagine a country with over 200 estimated population , having numerous cities housing large markets, only making use of one viable port!! Of course there will be congestion!! Efficiency of the Port will be reduced FG should give license to shoppers...to berth directly@port Harcourt. Not just making mouth with no action taken 1 Like |

Open up more ports along the coast and build more port warehouses. Then build freight rail that connects all the ports. If you want to be sophisticated, designate them, like say export ports - one port, then also designate imports by location, say all imports from north America - lagos port, all imports from asia - another state port, etc; then all exports - ph ports, with freight train connecting all the ports. If I was in charge, after doing the above, I will also think of off shore storage. 3 Likes |

Lagos State should manage their Port, Rivers manage your Port, Delta State manage your Port. Federal government should do oversight and collect a percentage. Shikena. 3 Likes |

iwaeda: Nothing will change in Nigeria because Nigerians are bereft of ideas and have been reduced to afrobeat dancing ethnic bigots. From the eloquently spoken independence campaigners to this? Look at this topic 1 hour after posting and on front page. If it were a topic were people can trade tribal slurs or celebrity gossip, it would have been up to page 3 or 4 at least.
