OGUN UNCOVERS AN UNAUTHORISED FLYOVER BRIDGE IN OMO FOREST

Ogun State Government has detected and ordered an immediate destruction of an unlawful flyover bridge undergoing construction across Oluwa River, a boundary between Omo forest, Area J4 in Ijebu East and Ondo State.

The Commissioner for Forestry, Hon. Tunji Akinosi, who led a monitoring team to Laagan Village, where the unauthorised construction of about 50 meters long bridge was located, commanded the settlers to pull it down within two weeks before the next monitoring exercise that would come up on the 21, this month.

Akinosi said aims and objectives behind the heinous act, was for easy transportation of the State's forest resources by illegal loggers and flitches production, called 'Alamole', to be freely stolen and taken away to neighbouring States.

He pointed out that the present administration would not fold its arms and allow illegal settlers to take over the forest reserve, adding that some unscrupulous elements were behind the illegal construction which must have gulped about 15 to 20 million naira.

The Commissioner noted that many of the settlers who keep illegal arms to perpetrate crimes would be arrested and charged to court, saying, armed soldiers would remain part of the frequent monitoring exercises in order to prevent banditry which is becoming prevalent nationwide.

The government are inhumane, they don't have any good thought for the citizens. They don't want to do anything that will benefit the citizens and when the citizens come together to help themselves the government go against it.

So you believe you are more credible & know more than the people ruling you, & you are on Nairaland passing comments? Those in power are the cream of the crop for today, a bad tree can never yield good fruits, a vicious cycle with no end in sight.

You Nigerians will always have an excuse for these cream of the crop failures who are parading as politicians.

We're not ready yet coz the youths (especially) lack the unity of purpose and we act like we're not educated.

Indeed, a vicious cycle with no end in sight...sad!

You can, and UNESCO will tell you that, look at what is happening in the rain forest of the Niger Delta?

You are mistaken. UNESCO has no authority or means to enforce an economic free zone at any of its selected locations.

That is up to the government of the country involved and no reasonable government will deny the economic rights of the indigenous population without compensation or outright relocation.

We know how much the EU pays the Cross-River state government to keep its forest reserves and primate sanctuaries. Part of those funds are to create alternative means of livelihood for the inhabitants. It is their land. Their own crude oil. They should be compensated.

The Eiffel Tower and the Great Wall of China are UNESCO Heritage sites. Can UNESCO tell the French or Chinese not to profit from them. If they want those places to be closed then cash must change hands, simple.

I will be glad if you can share this on your comment, the bridge is not necessary, the bridge is illegal in the sense that it linked people from other state (people living at the outskirt of other states) into the forest reserve.

Why do they need bridge to the forest reserve for? The forest reserve is thousands of hectares and it accomodates the few wildlife left in nigeria.

Because of the size of the forest reservr, it is HARD to monitor the hook and corners of the forest and we’ve had days when we found dead elephants with the TUSKS of the elephants harvested away! The foresters don’t how it happened.

These things happened through illegal unknown Routes like this. So will you still advice them to leave this structure?

This structure serves NO PURPOSE for anything than illegal and nefarious activities.

I will be glad if you can modify this with your comment.

We’ve lost countless animals in the reserve due

Bros! Do you know that there are standards that applies in the building things as sensitive as a bridge? Can you even imagine the consequences of a faulty bridge talk more of one illegally constructed without standard checks. It's equivalent to coupling airplanes together that will carry a lot of people.

The dangers aside, the area is a sensitive area for wildlife and forestry and is home to a lot of endangered species, especially some of the last groups of forest elephants in Nigeria. Poachers hunt these valuable animals and take their tusk away.

Do you understand the amount of international pressure and interest in the area given the problems poachers present?

Lastly, this was built by those criminals to further their nefarious activities.

Idiat, have you considered how it would affect the lives of other settlers going about their legitimate businesses? Why not employ range guards to curtail the activities of these illegal poachers and loggers?
As someone said they won't improve the infrastructure of the area, but when someone spends about 20million naira to build, u go and destroy it. The heart of man, especially most politicians is evil.

There is no settlement there. It's a reserve.
And the nearest settlement to the said place is about 45km to the boundary of ondo state which also do not have a settlement close to that same place. And the road to the site was created by illegal timber fellers. And besides there are lagal roads around if they had wanted to avoid passing through the express.

It's a reserve but it's a community in itself with individuals who run the affairs.

To permanently stop the illegal activities there, the government representatives there would have to be questioned.

Whether we accept or not, there's a systemic rot in all areas of the Nigerian Economy and on all levels of government.

So we should promote illegality because of system rot? What is illegal should be treated as such until stated otherwise.
