Abaxha indeed centralized corruption and we were better off economically but not democratically. Freedom of expression was gone. The saving grace under Buhari is Social Media that's bridging the gap in media freedom restriction.

sure, I'm not saying abacha's government was a good one either, due to not having freedom of speech and all...

In terms of policy making in the Army he's the best so far. You're saying he is the worst because you're not in the Army and probably because of the security challenges in the country.

Obj changed his service chiefs every 2 years, he appointed both northerners and southerners as COAS, he never appointed any Muslim to the position.
Yaradua had only 2 COAS, all northerners, one Christian, the other one Muslim.
GEJ made his appointment of COAS from his constituency, south east and south south, all Christians.
Buhari also picked his COAS from his constituency, north west and north east
They will not see this...especially Reno Omocry

a very big lie, Abacha's government was economically better than all the governments in Nigeria since 1999, he was a thief yes but looting was restricted to only a few of his clicks, unlike what we have today, he was a tyrant yes, but he only terrorised politician and big men who stepped on his toes, he had no business with the masses, lastly it was a heavily militarized government which had soldiers everywhere doing the work of police too, but economically Nigeria was better...

Where u d one doing the shopping then?
How old were u then, will like to know...
What n what did abacha did that made his govt to be wonderful over other military and democratic presidents?

I understand that during OBJ tenure, the nation was just coming out of military dictatorship hence the need for balance. But the death of Yar-Adua and the drama that followed led to the distrust and ethnic suspicion we are witnessing today. This division don tey!!!

People fail to see this. Its social media that is bringing it to the fore.

You are right, but he was referring to the period when Abacha was Chief of Staff, not when when he was Head of State.

Bluffly:

Military and the economy was far more better under Abacha's regime. He suffered as a result of some killings.

Both were worse off. Don't look at economy only by gauging exchange rate and per litre price of petrol.

Significant number of people were living in penury during Abacha to the extent that the so called middle class were even using fire wood to cook.

You see that's the problem we have in Nigeria , I was old enough to buy things by myself, go to school by myself, so I know the purchasing power of the average Nigerian, what you should know is, the level of poverty of the average Nigerian was way better back then compared to now, yes there are more industries now, but did that reduce the level of poverty, No it did not, did the inflation rate increase since after abacha's regime, yes and it never came down, I'm not justyfying abacha's government either but I'm only saying what I observed, Nigerians were not complaining of hunger during abacha's time, they only complained of tyranny and oppression, Nigerians started complaining of hunger during OBJ's time and it has increased from then till now, the truth is when the system of government changed the government became very expensive to run coupled with excessive looting from a multiplied number of persons in office unlike abacha's time when it was restricted to only him and a few of his clicks, then the multiplied number of people in office in a democratic system 99.99 percent of them were visionless for over 20 years and counting till we get it right, you can imagine the poverty that has grown since then, so whats the difference, size of governance and restricted looting, I'm not saying the solution to the country's problem but that's what made abacha's government better than all the governments since 1999 economically...

Obasanjo is the only leader and elderstatesman Nigeria has, highly intelligentand strategic. Others are religious and ethnic bigots. Yaradua would have tolled baby's steps but sickness truncated his life. No wonder his tenure was so peaceful. Had he not changed them every two years, the level of corruption and complacency would have been so much .

Nigerians were not complaining cos the entire border was opened, goods n services were just entering the country.
Infact those days garri was costlier than rice or beans cos garri was processed locally, while bulk of the rice we ate was imported.
The population of the country as at then wasnt high compate to what we have now. We didnt have insecurity then as we have now, libya was still peaceful....

You do not need any economic data for that, the average purchasing power of every Nigerian that time was better than now, inflation rate was far lesser, as at then 100 naira could feed a whole family, compare the minimum wage that time to what it is now then match it with what 100 naira could do that time and what 100 naira can do now, then you will know what I'm talking about... if you need the breakdown of what 100 naira could purchase then and now, I can give you a break down...

Inflation does not necessarily mean an economy is bad. In fact, it may be good if at a healthy and stable level. Now, the fact people could buy a lot with 100 naira then does not mean people were earning 30k as the minimum wage or earned as much today. recall the minimum wage was much lower, at about 3k. Nigeria's exports were not competitive either.

Economic data remains important.
