Hello to the House

Please I need a Dog for security purposes, I have kids so I dont need something extremely aggressive.

I do need a VERY large intimidating looking dog, one whose Barking sound will scare folks away. I am inclined to buying a GSD.

So what will the house recommend

Lastly, for learning purposes, some Dogs go as high as 350k-500k while same breed goes for 150-200k

What's the difference other than the physical looks

This is H-Cube Kennel. This link was sent to me by a brother.
For security dogs, you can get Caucasian, GSD or Rottweiler. Caucasian dog is a large dog and barks very well. GSD and Rottweiler can serve the purpose also but they are not as big as Caucasian. The temperament of a dog depends on how one raise the dog. Even if you are buying a puppy or semi-adult ( between 2month - 6month), the temperament of the parent of the dog you are buying matters. If the parent are extremely wild dogs , then there is likelihood the the puppies will be.
And introducing puppy or semi-adult to children is very easy. If the temperament of the dog is cool, allow the dog to play with the children under your watch.
Re: Advice Needed:i Need A Dog For Security Purposes by prince2pac(m): 7:07am On Apr 01
The upbringing of your dog plays a role in its aggressiveness, we have a Caucasian/GSD mix,two local breeds, and I can you that those dogs are the best thing ever.... they don't get intimidated... even the other day police came to the compound to make an arrest, they stood their ground even after the officers shot in the air, they made it clear no one passes the compound.... and they are very playful..... my neighbor also has a dog from that same litter but his own is not even aggressive a bit....

with my little experience in dogs, I will advice you get a bull mastiff, they are good family dogs and also do well in terms of security.
Re: Advice Needed:i Need A Dog For Security Purposes by Henrishaw06(m): 7:18am On Apr 01
For the price variation in the same breed of dog, there is pedigree and non-pedigree dogs.
Pedigree dogs are dogs with known bloodline to at least 5th generation. Apart from being registered, you can easily identify the genetic structure of the pedigree dog looking at the bloodline. This will give you information about the temperament, body structure, head formation etc of the dog even at puppy stage. That is, you have an idea of how your dog will be.
Non-pedigree on the other hand is the opposite of the above. There is no record to show. Majority of the puppies will look good but loose shape and formation while growing up. This can be as a result of the breeding pattern of the parent dog.

There are notable difference between the two pictures of dogs that I shared yet they are called Caucasian

If you need a good guard dog that can get along with kids you should try any of these common breeds; German Shepherd, Bullmastiff, Rottweiler, Caucasian Shepherd dog.
Note: The upbringing of a dog matters a lot, what you actually need is a well balanced dog. A dog that knows when to attack and when to be calm, a dog that can differentiate between friend and foe. Everything all boils down to training, no matter the breed you decide to buy, you have to invest your time and energy in training the dog. Those basic obedience trainings like Sit, stay, come, go can really go a long way so do not joke with them. Good luck

well I'll recommend a Gsd,its the best dog for a beginner (I.e a first time dog owner) they're easy to train and very much alert and active when it comes to security...... you could go for a working line or show line depending on your budget (although I'm not quite sure how aggressive a show line can be but my working line gsd is a badass,at barely 4months no one could trespass our compound talkless of visiting without notice)
Caucasians are also good dogs but they have a voracious appetite...
Rottweilers make sense when it comes to security but they need a firm handling
Boerboels too are quite intimidating when it comes to size but you must make sure its a pedigree

Thanks for this, please whats the difference between showline and working line?

The showline vs working line was the going price rate?

I was made to understand that Caucasians are very difficult to control, Is this true?

well there's a significant difference between the working lines and show lines
1.Most show lines are pedigree dogs with their history still intact while you would hardly find a working line with an intact history (so this is the major reason for the difference in price)
2.All showlines are slantbacks while working lines are straight-backs
3.From what I know "Show lines are bred mainly for dog shows and events while working lines are main deal when it comes security and working
4.All show lines might appear bigger and have a long coat while working lines might be smaller or of the same size and could either be long coats or shortcoats.
5.And i noticed here in Nigeria, most showlines are black and tan/orange coat color while working lines come in several coat color. (from the 5 points you should be able to diff them now)

About the Caucasians,I don't really have a personal experience with them but from my friends and other people I've worked with, they seem to be well behave if you feed them well and you train them earlier... every dog is shaped by the way you train them

then the price rate
showline puppies range between 200-250k
working line puppies range between 35-50k (depending on quality and coat type)
while semi-showlines are between (100k - 150k)
NOTE:Semi-showlines are products of crossbreeding working line with showlines

GSDs are all talk and no action. You should get a Rottweiler. They are more security focused.

Hello. Thank you for mentioning us.

For the first question which is which dog would we recommend for security. We are biased grin as we are focused on the GSD breed so will advise that. However going into specifics the GSD, when you take your time to pick or you are guided will serve as excellent family dog and also serve as good alarm or alert dog. We must add here 2 issues...temperament and training to be able to fulfill that role effectively. Generally GSDs are good loyal family dogs and when balanced are most suited for family companion (good with kids too) and security alert/alarm. With the right training and careful selection will serve for security purposes effectively. Worklines generally have a higher prey drive although you have showlines selectively bred for higher than normal prey drive for the line which is usually low to medium. They are very intelligent and medium to high easy to train.
On second question on price differentials a lot of things come to play. Pedigree of parents in terms availability/knowledge of the lineage. Titles if any. Health testing if any including that of dogs in its lineage. Color. Coat. Size etc. A combination of these including the breeder's perception of value or worth come to play. We do not rule out scarcity and wrong valuations too as we have also noticed this.
Finally, if you need more advise, concerning a GSD specifically we will be glad to guide you for free in arriving at your making a decision. We hope we were able to be of help.

Op follow I second this comment.

What you need is a purebred gsd, gsds bark a little more than other breeds you know of, but I can tell you that a gsd is a higher version of the ekuke you know.

A companion, not so expensive to feed when compared to the boerboels, Caucasian shepherds and rottweilers.

Their alertness and activeness is second to none, very hyperactive breed which will best suit your purpose as a first timer looking out for a guard dog.

Next time please mention my moniker well, didn't get the mention, just decided to check pet section and I'm seeing this.

What makes it my best bet

their parents have intimidating sizes; very large and are trained security duo though very loyal and family friendly but can take a bullet to defend their owners.

Even these lil ones started barking at 2months and their big bones are tell tales they would grow into large terror.

Besides, they are purebreed, slant and long coat.

Hello there, sorry I've been very busy for some weeks now and hardly have time for the Nairaland platform. In fact the platform is not really encouraging to me. But to your request and questions, I can see Mr PeraGSD has done a great and credible justice to it. I hope you are able to make a good choice at the end. Thanks for the mention.

PS: Please ignore number 1,2 and 5 in what RYEOFARMS wrote as a means in knowing the difference in bloodlines of the German Shepherd Dog. It's all garbage and should be trash in the bin.
