Currently in a wedding ceremony, and I was bemused when the pastor asked the groom,

"Is that the woman you paid for?"

Like, is she a commodity?

I felt pity for the young lady, and others like her cry

Isn't this lowkey slave trade?

You only pay bride price for a virgin.

Exodus 22:16-17

Bride price is not a condition for marriage, in fact it's a penalty for taken a woman's virginity.

African's been defiling the Bible since time immemorial.

Dear Husbands, go get your refund if your wife ain't a virgin. grin

I was trying to explain something similar to a feminist on Facebook the other day.

She was asking why certain culture punish women for infidelity and do nothing to men.

I told her that in the eyes of the tradition, the man bought the woman. That what we call marriage here is business transaction.

Of course it didn't sit well with her so she started the usual ranting of men and women being equal in marriage bla bla.

So I broke it down for her.

1. A man likes you and wants to marry you.

2. He meets your people and they give him a list of what they need before he can have you.

3. When everything in the list is provided, they will hand you over to him and you change your surname(change of ownership)

How are the two people eqaul?
What did she you pay to own him?

Aunty disappeared.

The pastor is right. In fact, very honest choice of words, I must say. The day we change the term "yahoo boys" to barawo or thief, that's the day they will start changing. It is high time we began calling a spade, spade. We sugarcoat things too much in this country!

it depends on how you want to read it.

the pastor could have said, "is that the woman you chose?" and it would still be offensive to some people.

context matters a lot.

Op its the way you took it. "Pay for " as the pastor said was " paid bride price for" Why are you changing it Mr man? People still dey pay bride price for non virgins sef? grin Waste of money. Even if its #100, use am buy sweet or chewing gum its better. In respect of those none virgins quoting that guy that talked about bride price in Exodus.. None virgins girls are porn stars to me. The guy is right ,tradition or no tradition.Jews culture or African whatever . Bride price should not be paid for none virgins.. Who dey breath there??
Re: Is That The Woman You Paid For? Pastor Asked Groom! by soundOsonic: 6:53pm On Apr 10, 2021
I don't get didn't he paid a price for his bride? Isn't it bride price?
If you are not Okay with what the pastor said then nobody should accept or pay bride price.
Yes the the bride is what he paid for.
People still don't understand that marriage is a transaction. The man pays the father, the lady drops her father's name and adopt her spouse name. Isn't it same ladies that will be shouting come and pay my bride price.
You adopt a child, you will still pay the orphanage home. It is a transaction.
You go to work and hustle like a slave and then you are paid and you refuse calling yourself a commodity.
You pay for courses to learn "how to sell yourselves to employers and investors". You still think you ain't a commodity.
Both women and men are commodity. The truth is how you treat your commodity. Do you treat them with love and willing to die for it? Or do you take your commodity to be trash.
Anyone that quotes me just know your country sees you as a commodity. Anything that happens to you the country can easily pass you as "collateral damage" even though it is lives we are talking about.
Wise up
