Happy Sunday fellow NL, am just enquiring on the career path of counselling and therapy in Nigeria.

Is it really a good career path?

Nigerians would rather go to a pastor than visit a therapist. They think mental illness is spiritual.
Though you can make cool cash if you secure a job with NGOs.

You will get more opportunities in Germany, US or Canada.

Get a degree in theology and join any denomination and you're good to go. Anything outside that will be a total waste of time.

Correct..unless he wants to be self-sponsored. Because many Nigerians can't even accept that they could be depressed, not to speak of suffer from other mental health ish-es.

Yes...and even if they experience depression in any form, they'll look for the nearest pastor because we're religious in nature.

The average depressed Nigerian will feel more comfortable talking to a pastor than a professional counselor.

I study guidance and counselling.

It's a good course, but here in Nigeria is a waste of time. Unless you intent to practice outside or go into pastoring.

Yes

For the guy above me dont make a mockery of the call of pastorship (shepherding)
There are fake pastors just as they are fake lawyers, doctors, teachers and mechanics

Ednut you won't tell a man to rub grease on his hands and overall, hold spanner and screwdriver, park a few old cars with open bonnet then boom he don hammer?

Please respect the Christian leadership, terms and faith
I won't say so about another religion

Counselling is a fantastic career op, go for it, but you need emotional strength, maturity and thick skin
You will hear things and you must be wise to direct the person aright
God help us

Who needs a counsellor here in Nigeria when everybody is a potential counsellor that ushers out free advise without paying ?

Not in Nigeria, it's not. But it is in the abroad because over there, every school is mandated to have at least one councillor.

Ask Daniel Akpata........ smiley

The problem with this career path in Nigeria is, people don't like to pay for counselling and don't believe in counselling and therapy........

They would either hope the problem away, pray the problem away, fast the problem away, vigil the problem away or receive counselling from an unqualified pastor/imam or Instagram, twitter or nairaland a solution........ grin

Your statement is stereotypical and generalistic in nature. Such assertion is false to start with. Not all Nigerians seek counseling services from their pastors

Hmmmmmmm, op, find a counselor around you and explain your situation/problem to him, try to market him/her to some people around you, if 20% should come back better than they went(ensure you get their feedback), then you can make your conclusion on the viability of the course here in Nigeria.
