If they don't expect gifts after purchasing the aso ebi, then it is ok. After the wedding you can use the eso ebi as home cloth.

But if they still expect you to give them gifts after paying for the aso ebi, then give them the 20k as a gift.

The south western people have been using aso ebi since time immemorial. It was not used or picked because of profits or to make gain for their ceremonies. They used aso ebi as a symbol to unify and for people to celebrate with them.

It is very disheartening now to see people, (especially people that copied the culture from the yorubas) using Aso ebi as a means of raising money. May God help us.

My brother, Aso ebi has always been symbolic with the event and has been practiced for long in such that it looks awkward not to have it on any weeding or event. Na to buy material and add a little something because guests will sha come and eat rice and chicken at the event, all these cost money. And even for weddings without reception there will be gifts to be sent out and it`s capital intensive to throw parties these days reception or not.

It's not fraudulent. Nobody put gun on your head to buy. If I m giving out 25k material in the market to you for 20k, that's more than hospitable act.

That's the part you are getting wrong. The motive of aso ebi is to identify the group rejoicing with the celebrant. It's only in this part of the world that we go to a party to take from the celebrant. It should be the other way, the celebrant should be at the receiving end. You are not buying clothes because you will receive gift or giving food with big meat on the d day. It's your little way of telling the celebrant I appreciate you.

It can be worn to the church. And they probably need it for the pictures, etc.

For me though, aso ebi, whether with reception or not, is not compulsory.
