There was a coup d'etat that resulted in the killings of Northerners in power. It became a case of Northerners witchunting Igbos in military who they suspected were behind the coup.

Ojukwu and Buhari already having a long standing competition. Ojukwu hence capitalised on this opportunity to start a secession of Igbos and SS from Nigeria. Unfortunately the same igbos discriminated against the SS. Which made it easy for the SS to pull out from the secession.
