http://money.cnn.com/2010/03/11/news/economy/health_care_doctor_incomes/index.htm

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Despite the growing shortage of family doctors in the United States, medical centers last year offered higher salaries and incentives to specialist nurses than to primary care doctors, according to an annual survey of physicians' salaries.

Primary care doctors were offered an average base salary of $173,000 in 2009 compared to an average base salary of $189,000 offered to certified nurse anesthetists, or CRNAs, according to the latest numbers from Merritt Hawkins & Associates, a physician recruiting and consulting firm.

Bidemi12, at the end of the day in this generation Education alone means nothing. There are people out there with doctorates, Phds etc but they are at home getting fat because of joblessness.

Maybe back in the day but these days seems like the uneducated are making the more money

i still say you dont know what you are talking about. are you saying MBA's gotten from nigeria? then i probably would understand and agree. Nigerian degree's are generaly not appreciated. but an MBA from an american university? do you know the cost of getting one? are you talking from personal observation or hearsay which is common among nigerians.

Unfortunately the Naijaness and bad belle in us seeks to try and pull people down and equate monetary millions with happiness. Money is needed to have a good life but don't feel that oodles of cash will make you any happier. I know, I've been there !!!! This isn't to say Millions make you unhappy, NO !!! What I say is that financial wealth is not guarantee of either HEALTH, LOVE, or HAPPINESS.

Regina has made a laudable choice to be out of the limelight and 'enjoy' her life privately. I can bet you the piece of mind she has in he US is better than providing cannon fodder for the gutter journalists who go round trying to smear people's names in the name of 'News Scoops'.

I've also seen comments about 'wiping butts in America' and it really showed me the shallowness and ignorance of whoever made such comments. I can bet you that person (or those people) are 'stuck' in Nigeria with little hope of ever crossing our borders. Let me educate YOU, Nursing is not about 'wiping butts' and has moved well ahead of the Nurse Eliza's you come across in Nigeria. Before you ask, NO, I'm not a nurse, will never and don't aspire to be one !!!!!!

Massive kudos to Regina , To me she's the kind of role model a lot of girls should aspire to be like. She's been there, Done that and I wish her all the very best !!!

I really don't understand how someone will compare being an actress in Nollywood to having a Phd in Nursing in the U.S.A. Nollywood films will probably pay her N 1 million tops, which is about 7000 dollars, and for someone earning that much, she will definitely not have too many roles in a year. Besides, she is definitely not in hot demand as she was several years ago. Remember people like Liz Benson, and Eucharia?

With a Phd in Nursing, she's well on her way to becoming a Prof. This is the truth. I do not see the possibility of a Phd holder or professor changing bedpans. As a Dr. in Nursing, her value keeps climbing up as she goes higher. In contrast, her value in Nollywood will keep depreciating as time goes on.

all of you guys are full of crap. you guys make america to be some kinda utopia. utopia it is not. this is not a good place to be in, especially for a nigerian who has spent the better part of their life in nigeria (talk less of one who was adored as a celeb in nigeria). i can bet you that all the nurses in america (and i mean every last one of them ) if offered 5 million dollars and told to return to nigeria OR if offered $150,000 per annum to live in america, i can bet my last dollar that every last bit of them will be on the next thing smoking out of america. there is no such thing as rest of mind or comfort in america. its not possible.

I doubt that she is making 60,000.00 per annum. With a PhD she is probably making 6 figures. I am glad that she did not stop at just RN because they do not make that much money. Anybody who tells you otherwise is lying. I am glad that she is setting a good example for her girls. For a sec there it seemed like she had turned into a gold digger. Thankfully she realized while there was still time that looks can only get you far. It does not last forever. Hooray for women taking control of their desitny.

In some states Nurse practitioners or midwives can even own their own practice. I think in the state of GA you have to have a doctor on staff or partner with a Doctor or something like that. There are also people who have doctorates in nursing. I know because Nursing has been overdone in our culture that people tend to look down their noses at it but it is a very honorable profession and not all of them treat it as the ticket to buying the biggest SUV they can find. For some people it is what they have always wanted to be

Some people must think nursing is easy at a PhD level. It's not.

It's impressive and they make a huge amount of money.

I agree with you. It is very amusing reading some of the posts on this thread, I have heard it all now and it simply amazes me how myopic and uneducated some folks are.

What this woman decides to do with her life in terms of her career choice is absolutely her business, remember she is not a teenager but a mother to one actually. Understandably, most comments are making valid comparisons between her prospects as a Nollywood actress as opposed to her current choice of being a nurse in the US. I am not privy to her motivation in life and likewise majority of posters in Nairaland.

In relation to the various extrapolations about the opportunity cost of her decision to leave the film industry in Nigeria and pursue a career in Nursing in America, i can only say we are not soothsayers , she might have figured that the film industry in Nigeria would not serve her best interest considering many factors, mostly unknown to us and most importantly none of our business!

My main issue here is the crass and uninformed belittling of her achievements, (a particular poster named Ystranger has consistently suggested that a Phd in nursing is below par for some odd reason) . I totally agree that different courses have different difficulty levels, but to conclude that a Phd in nursing is inferior to other doctorate degrees is very naive and disingenious especially if the research degree is attained in a structured research environment as opposed to (for instance) an online Phd or the ones most politicians in Nigeria purchase for the sake of being referred to as a DOCTOR.

I dont care how much she makes from it ( but please be aware that she would make a lot as a doctor of nursing which has a reputation for very rigourous and well structured qualitative research methodological and paradigmatic backgrounds) but she has made herself happy by attaining such a qualification and has set an example for others to follow.

Uhmm, Lots of assumptions and misinformation here, RNs start and stay around the mid 40 and 50 thousand range (one job). Gets slightly higher if you are a nurse manager.  When an RN goes on to become a Nurse practitioner (FNP, Psychiatry etc) by doing a Masters and some clinical rotations,  they usually start around 70's to 80's  where there's a shortage of physicians. Some may earn slightly more than that.  My NP earns mid 80's, in this part of Texas because we need them more here. I have encouraged some of my RNs to go for their masters and become NPs. Its harder to recruit physicians in this part of TX so any help I get is well appreciated.  Her contemporaries in Atlanta GA would be grateful to earn mid 70,000 or 80,000 plus.
Nurse Practitioners help fill some of the gap under an MDs supervision/license. (To my knowledge, only in Washington State can an NP practice without a physicians license to cover them.)

In only one instance is there an anomaly of income- nurse anesthetists could get paid in the mid 100's. There are very few of them compared to the hundreds of thousands of nurses out there, They are there because of the horrible shortage of anesthetists who themselves earn around the 300's onwards depending on the kind of practice - (employed, solo or you are part of a group). Otherwise nurses do not earn these amounts being quoted here, PhD or not. With a PhD, most nurses usually combine teaching with some clinical work if they desire to. Having a PhD will never elevate you to the status of an MD here. Just thought to clarify.
Of course, an RN still earns around or even more than the average wage here in the US, all things considered.
