OH please cut that crap. The American flag conveys a message yet maintaining a minimalistic design . I can sight further examples like Mexico, Canada, Brazil, Britain, Spain and Germany.
The message behind the color pallette Green and white is as mundane as they come. How does peace and soil fertility represent a unique trait of Nigeria and Nigerians? If anyone should be celebrated, it should be the guy who designed the coat of arm.
And please shut it if you don't have eyes to critique a piece of art.

This man won a competition for God sake involving designers across the length and breadth of the country and his design was chosen as the best at that material time when there was little to nothing sophistication in designing... But what I don't really understand is that his case had been brought up several times and I think the government had responded appropriately at some point in time and so I don't understand this latest quest for sympathy or help again.

What happened to his children and grand children or relations? What is the design in a tastless rhodesia/British flag. What most of you don't know is that the Nigerian flag is a symbol of white supremacy. It was the British flag of Rhodesia(current zimbabwe) and still the British flag of Nigeria. No intellect in the flag design.

Oga flags look alike because the whole world is choosing from the same colors putting in consideration what's unique about their countries.
Look at the Union Jack, the New Zealand and the Australian flag?
Both were British colonies and their flags are obviously inspired by the Union Jack.
This is not an admission that the Nigerian flag was inspired by the British because it doesn't in anyway.

This man has been settled over and over, if he is mis managing the funds that is his business after all there is nothing special in the design of simple green white green.
People designed the coat of arms, currencies we are using, aso rock, and several other national monuments of note. Must we go about settling them every now and then?.
Have you ever had of America , Britain , Germany etc raising this kind issue?
Please let us face important issues and forget these irrelevant selfish propagandas meant to defraud the people.

how many time do they want to rehabilitate and look into the poor condition of this man because he is the great Akinkunmi. This people should let us have peace of mind. This same issue was raised two years ago and it was reported that both the FG his State government were said gave him cash and a new house to live.

Even if they give hom a news house now it will still become desripit as long as it's not properly maintained. Baba's children should fix his house this time around.

I remember the day … I designed the Nigerian flag
In 1959, a year before Nigeria’s independence, a 23-year-old student helped colour the country’s identity.

Sixty-two years after a British journalist first suggested the name “Nigeria”, a 23-year-old Ibadan-born student gave the new country its national flag.

Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi was studying engineering at Norwood Technical College in London when he saw a newspaper advert calling on people to enter a competition to design the Nigerian flag.

He mailed his submission to Lagos a short time later, and in October of the following year received a letter inviting him to the London office of the Commissioner for Nigeria in the United Kingdom, where he was told that his green and white design had been selected. He had won 100 pounds ($281 in 1959) as well as a place in Nigeria’s history books.

It was October 1959, exactly a year before Nigeria’s independence.

Akinkunmi is now a retired civil servant who resides in one of the poorer areas of Ibadan, in a green and white house that can only be reached on foot. Separated from his wife for about two decades, his only live-in companion is his 28-year-old son.

He does not have a phone and last owned a car in the early 1990s. But he enjoys walking through the neighbourhood and further afield to visit two friends from his school days. These excursions add colour to his days.

The furthest he recently travelled was a visit to Abuja in 2014, where he received a national honour from then-president Goodluck Jonathan. He was also given a lifetime’s salary of a presidential special assistant – around 800,000 naira (roughly $4,000) is now paid into his account every month. Akinkunmi is effusive as he remembers that day, but he cannot recall what Jonathan said to him. He also has trouble remembering the names of his two oldest friends.

Then, in 2008, Olaniran was contacted through his blog by a representative of the Nigerian edition of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, asking to be put in touch with Akinkunmi . For his appearance on a special edition of the TV show, Akinkunmi was given a cheque for two million naira (around $10,000). This was the money his son says was used to complete the green and white building they now live in.

I make no apologies, but this man's design of a plain green white green lacks any kind of artistry, very tasteless and bland. Smaller African and European countries have better minimalistic designs reflecting indept culture and history of their people.

I shudder to think how he came out tops in the so called competition. Who presided over the board that decided him the winner? The individual must be blind.

NB; If anyone should be celebrated, it should be the guy sho designed the coat of arm, funny we don't even know the name of the fellow. But history class always taught us about Taiwo Akinkumi
