Ahead of the May 6, 2011 re-run governorship election in some selected areas in Imo State, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has appointed four resident electoral commissioners to administer the crucial polls in the state.

The re-run election was decided at a meeting headed by Prof. Attahiru Jega on Friday last week, as the commission determined what should be done to avert a constitutional crisis in the state where unscrupulous INEC officials connived with the incumbent governor, Ikedi Ohakim, to declare the state gubernatorial election held on April 26, 2011 “inconclusive” even though it was out rightly won by the APGA candidate, Rochas Okorocha.

INEC has contacted four state RECs to conduct a “credible rerun election” but Nigerian Pilot gathered from sources close to the commission that two of the RECs recruited have a troubled history of electoral fraud. It is claimed that they cannot be trusted to deliver on the hope and expectations of the people of Imo who were aspiring to end the tragic leadership of Ohakim through last Friday’s election.

Already, voters in the state have condemned the inclusion of Humprey Nwaghene, formerly the REC at Delta, who had declared Emmanuel Uduaghan as the governor in 2007, an election that was later upturned by an appeal tribunal. Mr. Nwaghene is currently the REC in Ebonyi.

Also troubling is the inclusion of Hon. Ikoiwak Aniebe the REC of Rivers State, who is to manage the process. Election analysts told our reporter that Mr. Aniebe has a poor electoral record and cannot be trusted to midwife a free and fair rerun in Imo State.

Other officials contacted to conduct the rerun election include, Mike Ighini, current REC of Cross Rivers State and Austin Okogie of Abia State.
