BREAKING: NANS suspends June 12 protest, distances self from ‘Buhari-must-go’ campaign

Kayode Oyero
11 June 2021

The National Association of Nigerian Students has suspended its planned June 12 nationwide protest, The PUNCH has learnt. NANS President, Sunday Asefon, made this known in a statement on Friday morning. It was titled, ‘NANS Suspends June 12 Protest Over Concerns About Safety Of Protesters And Fear Of Possible Hijack By Politicians – Comrade Sunday Asefon’.

According to the NANS president, the planned protest was aimed at decrying the insecurity in the country, especially the serial abductions of students. However, Asefon said some politicians with “different agenda” have perfected plans to hijack the protest to “ventilate their political opinions and sentiments”.

He also said the students’ body was not associated with the secessionist campaign or the ‘Buhari-must-go’ campaign slated to hold on Saturday by some politicians and activists.

He said, “Having considered the current security realities and the danger to the lives of our members in case of possible hijack of the planned protest, I in consultation with all the structures of NANS, therefore, announce the suspension of our proposed protest for June 12.

“The suspension of the protest is necessary to avoid a clash of interest and clash with security agencies that are on red alert to protect the nation’s infrastructure from security breaches on the proposed date as a result of many other protests slated for the date.

“We intend to protest for better security and improved welfare for our students, we must therefore not put the life of any of our students at risk to ventilate our grievances.”

Asefon further noted that the protest was not cancelled but postponed, adding that a new date would be announced for the demonstration.

That was why they used violence to hold the elections so they can put their stooges in place to always do their bidding.. Look at the shameless grandfather who claims to b a student leading d student body. A NANS dat comfortably sat at home for months while ASUU and ASUP went on strike

Did you know??

Other people’s opinions should never affect the decisions you make. It’s your life, not theirs. Do what makes you happy.

NANS

How have the mighty fallen indeed.

No longer ready to fight for change, but want to be comfortable.

(Tho, it may be a recognition of the fact that this is really a battle between PDP and APC, not a fight for better governance , wink, wink)

Modified

Nairaland went off air for some time. Hope all is well o!

To be candid, what's the point of having a Buhari-must-go protest. The old man will never resign no matter the clamour. NA cannot impeach him. He cannot be forcefully removed under a democracy. So what's the point? Twitter has been gagged so even if the Govt commits another massacre of protesters it wouldn't trend globally like EndSARS. Even during the EndSARS saga, the Buhari must go protests were futile and the Govt will even be more aggressive now to prevent any further heat.

Make we sit out the remaining 1.5 years of this calamity jeje.

Btw, what happened to Nairaland shutdown for 2 hours this morning. Hope say Mr Lai Lai never dey reason Seun's side after femming the bird app.

I'm sure you are a Northerner, but you are a curse and disgrace to the North. In Arewa today, bandits kidnap people and collect bags of rice in exchange. Lives of Northerners are the cheapest in this country. Zamfara Bandits collect 12-15M for villages of close to 50,000 people, means each northern life is worth 300 Naira, less than the price of a newspaper used to wrap suya.
Unfortunately, you are one of those cursed fellows supporting this mediocre government of failures.

Go to Katsina and repeat this thing if they won't beat you to death. Buhari that couldn't go to do Sallah in Katsina, he knows why he's running.
