A police officer once said these exact words to me "look at you, you fit be my junior brother age mate and you dey drive car. Yet I dey here dey carry iron (referring to his gun) from morning till night. You must find me something before you go."

I had to give him 500 naira before he let me go.

Can you imagine.

Truly, at the risk of blanket generalization, I'm tempted to believe the average policeman on the road is a desperately frustrated individual.

Yes we know their pay is small, but pray, who is well paid in this country?

You need to see the annoyance on thier face once they see a young man driving a flashy car.

It's infact one of the reasons I'm yet to change my car. In addition, those btw OPI and Otupka branch, which is a route I frequent, seem to be a particular breed of sadists looking for who to vent thier frustration on.

My car is not even a flashy one.

Just this normal 2007 Toyota corolla sport.

I do everything to avoid those people.

I was stopped by some dumbf**k from the Nigerian Police Farce in 2003 while driving from the office. He saw by my demeanour that I was pissed off with him, and that I wasn't scared. Then he was telling his mates "these young boys that carry their father's car...", referring to me. That was when I knew those guys really have bags and bags of issues.

Hmmmm. Someone once introduced this pcrc to me in the past like you are a partial member of the police force. Was like, Kai! I no need am. What's the real benefit if I may ask? Anything to enjoy? I was once a barrack boy oo and I saw things hence am not sure one can join any of their board or group and not still get harassed by them?
Nothing much. Many joined mostly to avoid police harassment.

I have never been a fan of the Nigerian police because of several unsavory personal experiences with them. I have made this known several times on this forum, and one time a police officer Nairalander reached out to me privately to let me know that the despite the bad eggs in the Force, good ones still exist. Although I remain unconvinced (worse now more than ever), I still maintain a cordial relationship with this person.

This afternoon, my SO was stopped by the men in black at Underbridge on the road that leads to Guiness, Oba Akran road, Ikeja. They pulled him over and proceeded to do a 'thorough search' of the vehicle. Surprise surprise, what did they find at the corner of the door of the driver's side?

Yep, you guessed right. Colorado, aka Cannabis, aka advanced SK or whatever allied street adjective is given to this brand of illegal stimulant.

This is someone who has does not even fraternize with people who smoke this nonsense, neither has he smoked this in his life. He hardly even gives people lifts so where did this stick of Igbo come from?

You are right again. Our friendly Nigerian Police Officers dropped it there for the usual hydra headed purposes of extortion, intimidation, theft, thievery, harassment etcetera etcetera.

They handcuffed this innocent young man like a common criminal, and one of them nearly slapped him, but when the officer noticed his unruffled demeanour and almost maniacally calm laughter, they realised that perhaps, just, perhaps they were messing with the wrong candidate.

A took a call from higher quarters before he was released after hours of embarrassment and being shackled like a thief who stole the neighbourhood goat.

Now my question is what would have happened if he did not have contacts that he could reach out to? He would have been hauled off to jail and milked dry. There are so many innocent people in cells languishing because the people who have sworn to serve and protect them have betrayed them.

The Nigerian Police is NOT YOUR FRIEND. When they pull you over and want to search your vehicle, be VERY vigilant. If possible you latch their hands to yours so that all of you will search together in case they want to be unfortunate. Many of them plant illegal substances in people's vehicles and living quarters so that they can have an avenue to extort and harass them, and woe betides you if you don't have either connection or money to bail yourself.

THE NIGERIAN POLICE IS NOT YOUR FRIEND!!

Now you can see why the Unknown Gun Men bundled them out of the streets across the East. Nigeria police and army are terrorists.
You people should stay there and be doing ajebutter in Lagos and other parts of Yorubaland they will over run all of you there.

Besides, it's rare for people to go about with hard drugs in their cars. At all at all, their dealers will bring it to their house.

Nigerian police are frustrating elements of the society. The greed in all Nigerians is in them and they are using their uniforms to pepetrate it when they should curtail that of the society.
You are right, one should not expect anything less, in the whole world they collect the lowest pay, we still expect magic from them, even the greedy Nigerians well to dos, especially the Politicians still steal & loot, how much more somebody who is hungry with a gun. All the promises made to them for pay rise, till date, none was fulfilled. This attitude is not a Police thing, it is everywhere. The society is corrupt and they are product of the corrupt society

No amount of "vigilant" can stop a person who is determined to extort you especially in a state that rewards evil.
