Pope Francis is the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State. He was born on December 17, 1936 in Buenos, Aires, Argentina. He worked as a bouncer and janitor in his youth before training as a chemist and working as a technician in a food science laboratory.

After recovering from a serious illness, he was inspired to join the Society of Jesus in 1958. He ordained a Catholic priest in 1969 and, from 1973 to 1979, he was Provincial Superior of the Jesuits in Argentina.

Pope Francis has faced criticism from conservative theologians on many issues, including his promotion of ecumenism, as well as the admission of civilly divorced and remarried Catholics to communion with the publication of Amoris Laetitia.
